Kathryn E. Jenkinson (July 29, 2011)

Kathryn E. Jenkinson age 93 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 7:30 A.M. on Friday, July 29, 2011 at Heartland of Greenville. Kathryn was born June 26, 1918 in Darke County, Ohio, to the late James R. & Jessie M. (Shultz) Riegle.

Kathryn formerly was a telephone operator at United Telephone from 1948-1957 and a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, Kathryn is also preceded in death by her brothers, Virgil, William, Christian and Donald Riegle; and sisters, Dorothy Williams, Elsie Baker, Lily Bel Baker and Betty Altic.

Kathryn is survived by her husband of 72 years, Loyal J. Jenkinson whom she married April 20, 1939; daughter & son-in-law, Sandra Lee & Richard Gardner of Sun City West, Arizona; grandchildren, Michael Gardner, Jennifer Elias and Susan Aurand; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Wentworth of Greenville, Phyllis Seiler of Greenville and Jane Alexander of Craig, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ralph H. Brodrick (July 27, 2011)

Ralph H. Brodrick, age 85 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 9:56 P.M. Wednesday July 27, 2011 at Wayne Health Care Greenville, Ohio. Ralph was born February 15, 1926 in Arcanum, Ohio and the son of the late John and Effie (Mack) Brodrick.

He retired in 1986 from Chrysler Corporation of Dayton and was a veteran of W.W. II serving in the U. S. Army. Ralph was a member of the Greenville Moose Lodge, an avid bowler, horseshoe pitcher and enjoyed fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis M. (Arnett) Brodrick December 30, 1989. They were married September 9, 1950. Also by his brothers Chester, Robert, Ernest, Web and Reba.

Ralph is survived by his sons and daughters in law Jack L. & Hope Brodrick of Greenville, Ralph Kenneth & Julienne Brodrick of St. Louis, Missouri and David E. Brodrick and special friend Kathy Fantasia of Greenville. Grandchildren Angela (Darren) Sanders and Shawn (Amy) Brodrick. Step grandchildren Scott Snyder, Shelly Snyder and Sarah Fry. Twelve great grandchildren, sister Dorothy Mers of Reno, Nevada, sister in law June (Robert) Lawrence of New Paris and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday August 5, 2011 at the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with the Rev. Bob Boyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday August 4, 2011 from 5 until 8 P.M. in the funeral home.

The Greenville Moose Lodge will conduct a Lodge of Sorrow Thursday night at 7:30 P.M. and full Military Honors will be conducted by the Greenville Veterans Honor guard on Friday.

Gerald M. Roll (July 27, 2011)

Gerald M. Roll, 85 of Greenville, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville, Ohio.

He was born December 27, 1925 in Brock, Ohio, son of the late Herbert and Esther (Martin) Roll. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ingeborg L. (Luduch-Ketterer) Roll; a sister, Roberta Davis; a brother, Nevin Roll; and a step daughter Pamela Davis.

Gerald was retired from Greenville Post Office where he had worked for 30 years and also worked for the New York R. R. for 15 years. He was a member of the Greenville Church of the Nazarene, Darke County Veteran's Honor Guard in which he played taps on the trumpet, Lifetime member of the Ansonia American Legion and Greenville VFW.

He is survived by his 2nd wife Dola (Uhrick) Roll ; sons, James C. Roll of Union City, OH, Fred (Deb) Roll of Greenville, Frank (Molly) Roll of Union City, OH; a daughter, Roberta Roll of Greenville; step sons, Craig (Brenda) Bland of Ridgeville, IN, Michael (Bev) Bland of Wayne Lakes; grandchildren, Philip (Sara) Roll, Elizabeth Roll, Lisa Wilson, Rhonda Mitchell; great grandchildren, Madison Mitchell, Kyra Mitchell, Kamaira Mitchell, Levi Wilson, Nickolas Roll, Lauren Roll; step grand children, Josh Bland, Naomi Bland, Chris Bland, Travis Bland, Adam Bland; step great grandchildren Claire Bland; a sister, Carolyn Brandon of Celina, OH; brothers, Byron "Barney" (Darlene) Roll of Bellfontaine, OH, Dwight (Barbara) Roll of Punta Gorda, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be held Monday, August 1, 2011 at 10:30a.m. at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Thomas, Rev. Doug Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbottsville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, from 2 to 5 p. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Greenville Church of the Nazarene or Ansonia American Legion.

Dwanna E. McMiller (July 27, 2011)

Dwanna E. McMiller, age 64 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Wednesday July 27, 2011 at 9:55 PM at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Greenville, Ohio. She was born September 18, 1946 in Union City, Indiana the daughter of the late Marion M. & Phyllis (Hart) Armstrong.

She was a cosmetologist for 20 years owning her own shop for 15 years in Union City, Ohio called Dee’s Keep Kute. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Greenville, Ohio since 1974 and has held Senior Regent and Star Recorder.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her brother & sister in law: Steven & Mary Armstrong of Greenville; niece & husband: Stephanie & Rod Mikesell; nephew: Joshua Armstrong; great niece: Ashley Mikesell; great nephew: Jacob Mikesell; & several cousins.

A memorial graveside service will be held on Wednesday August 3, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Abbottsville Cemetery with Rev. Lowell Miller officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Rest Haven Nursing Home activities fund.

Edna C. Sutton (July 25, 2011)

EDNA C. SUTTON, 87, died Monday, July 25, 2011 in Akron, OH. She was born Edna Charlotte Brand on Sept. 12, 1923 in Franklin Township, Darke County, OH.

She was preceded in death by parents, August and Magdalene (Prasuhn) Brand, husband, Nolon Oneal Sutton, who died December 31, 1990 and sister, Henrietta Louise Brand, who died January 11, 1991.

Edna touched many lives as a teacher in Ansonia, Arcanum, and Franklin-Monroe. She taught English, music, journalism, drama, and private lessons in piano and voice. She was a past member and choir director at Grace Lutheran Church, Greenville and St. John Lutheran Church, Greenville.

Edna graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1942, and in 1949 received her Bachelor of School Music from Capital University, Columbus, OH where she was a student Chapel Choir director and member of the Phi Beta Fraternity.

She is survived by three daughters: Jill Ann Sutton (Greg) Filo of Akron, OH; Lynne Louise (Thomas) Williams of Hainesville, IL; and Jann Marie Sutton (Dean Sahr) of Elkton, MD. She also is survived by five grandchildren, Charlotte Ann Sutton Filo, Elizabeth Louise Gower, Rebecca Joyce Gower, Hannah Marie Lightcap, and Nolon Sutton Lightcap.

A private funeral service will be held for family and friends on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Ronald Shreffler officiating. Cheryl Lynn Baldridge (July 25, 2011)

Cheryl Lynn Baldridge age 51 of Columbus and formerly of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 10:57 A.M. on Monday, July 25, 2011 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville, Ohio. Cheryl was born December 3, 1959 in Greenville, Ohio, to John & Roberta (Riegle) Westfall of Greenville.

Cheryl was a nurse and also worked as a Health Insurance Consultant. Cheryl was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Greenville.

In addition to her parents, Cheryl is also survived by her daughters, Jenna Gueth of Columbus and Ashley Gueth of Columbus; and sisters, Penny Greenhalgh of Columbus and Jae Westfall of Columbus.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at First United Methodist Church 202 West Fourth Street Greenville, Ohio, with Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the church. Mildred S. Roberts, 91 of Greenville, Ohio died on Monday July 25, 2011 at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Greenville, Ohio. She was a member of Ithaca Open Bible Church from 1950 to 1990 & First Assembly of God Church since 1990.

She is preceded on death by her parents, 1st Husband: John H. Gunckel; 2nd Husband: Harold Roberts; son: Donald Duane Gunckel; Brothers: Donald & Samuel Sponaugle.

She is survived by two sons: Gary (Goldie) Gunckel and Larry (Sandy) Gunckel of Greenville, Ohio; one daughter: Kay (Tim) Means of Arcanum, Ohio; 7 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Friday July 29, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Rev. Hershel Fee officiating. Burial will follow in Abbottsville Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday July 28, 2011 and a ½ hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home. Marilyn J. George (July 25, 2011)

Marilyn J. George, age 73 of New Weston, Ohio passed away at 6:45 A.M. Monday July 25, 2011 at her residence. Marilyn was born June 4, 1938 in Dayton, Ohio and the daughter of the late Henry and Hazel (Baker) Harness.

She was retired as a Respiratory Therapist retiring from Coldwater Hospital. Marilyn was a member of the Silver Sneakers, the Rosehill Country Church, had served as Mayor of New Weston and was very involved with her family. Marilyn had performed at the New Weston Days Parade as well as many other venues as a clown and known affectionately as “Heartsy the Clown”.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Bill, Bob and Henry Harness.
Marilyn is survived by her daughters Dawn Peffly or Richmond, Indiana and Beth Combs of Greenville. She has 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, Brothers Jack Harness of New Carlisle, Jim Harness of Florida and Buster Bash of Lewisburg. Sisters Dottie Schramm of Winter Haven, Florida, Betty Pelaston of Troy, Barbara George of Lewisburg and Nancy Bash of Boston, Massachusetts. Also several nieces and nephews.

Marilyn had requested her body be donated to the Ohio State University College of Medicine but a Memorial Service has been schedules for 4:00 P.M. Saturday July 30, 2011 at the Rosehill Country Church with Pastor Don Brode officiating.

It is the wishes of the family that Memorial Contributions be given to Darke County Cancer Association.

James D. Yount (July 25, 2011)

James D. Yount, 68, of Hollansburg, Ohio and formerly of Union City, IN, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, July 25, 2011 at his residence.

He was born January 29, 1943 in Greenville, OH, son of the late Harold H. and Betty June (Brown) Yount. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie L. (Baker) Yount.

James had worked for over 20 years at the former Dayton Press and then retired as the superintendent of the Union City Indiana Water Department where he had worked for 23 years. He attended the Friendship Community Church, New Paris, Ohio.

He is survived by his second wife, Christine (Bowling) Yount whom he married November 12, 1971;
sons, Reuben R. Yount of Greenville, Darrin (Shelly) Keiser of Winchester, IN, Dennis (Jackie) Keiser of Nappanee, IN, and Stephen Scott (Pam) Yount of Union City, IN; a daughter, Rebecca (Bob) Ammons of Phoenix City, Alabama; grandchildren, Kelly Yount, David (Amber) Kiser, Rick and Nicole Yount, Tiffany (Chase) Borel, Joshua (Ashley) Stewart, Jessa, Mitchell and Alexandra Keiser, Hayden and Dylan Keiser, Stephani Prather, Mickinzie Hogg, Levi Yount, Brian and Brook Roberts; 4 great grandchildren; a sister, Judy Cottrell-Gibson of Greenville; a niece and a nephew.

Douglas J. Dowler, 45, of Arcanum, died Sunday, July 24, 2011 at Wayne Hospital, Greenville. Mr. Dowler was born in Greenville on August 4, 1965, the son of the late Janice E. (Ketring) and Larry J. Dowler who survives. Douglas was disabled from birth. He is also survived by his Sister Cindy Wooten and husband John of Versailles; Brother Mark Dowler and wife Kim of Sidney; Nieces and Nephews Ryan Dowler and wife Gabrielle of New York, Riley Dowler and wife Treva of Guatemala, Rindy Dowler of Greenville, Nikki Carter and husband Ryan of Russia, Bradley Wooten and wife Lacey of Covington, and Andrew Wooten and wife Rachel of Arcanum; 14 Great Nieces and Nephews. James Allen “Buck” Buckingham (July 23, 2011)

James Allen “Buck” Buckingham, 46, of Greenville, passed away on July 23, 2011 at his residence. Buck was born on November 21, 1964 to Charla Shoup. Buck worked as a contractor refinishing log homes during his life. He enjoyed fantasy football, garage sales and collecting all types of sports cards. Buck is preceded in death by his grandparents, Ralph and Mary Buckingham and uncles Danny, Donnie and David Buckingham. In addition to his parents, Buck is survived by a step father, John Mounce; son, Kraig Lawrence of Knoxville, TN; a daughter Allison Stith of Greenville, OH; little buddy, Nick Stith; two aunts, Joyce Rapsawich of Greenville and Gail Cline of Greenville; special friends, Stacia Gaddy of FL, Stacie Hilderbrand of Greenville and Suzi Arena of Greenville and puppy. Scott A. Lehman (July 19, 2011)

Scott A. Lehman, age 57 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 11:15 P.M. Tuesday July 19, 2011 at his residence. Scott was born September 4, 1953 in Greenville, Ohio and the son of the late Dr. Jack D. and Joyce (Wallen) Lehman.

Scott was an Electrical Engineer and most recently employed at Zed Industries of Vandalia, Ohio. He was a 1972 graduate of Greenville Senior High School, graduated from Tri-State University with a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters Degree from University of Dayton in Electrical Engineering. He was an avid Ham Radio Operator with call signs WA8TGX, K8AG and N9AG. Scott was an active member of the Treaty City Amateur Radio Club in Greenville and a member and past officer of the Southwest Ohio DX Association.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Douglas L. Lehman in 1962.

Scott is survived by his sister and brother in law Kelly and James Thwaits of Rotonda West, Florida. Also nephews and nieces Ryan, Rachel Jennifer and Ashley. Also great nephews and nieces Krue, Kayge, Keris and Marlo Thwaits, Sebastian Gause and Mayla Gause, Grayson and Myah Gibson.

It was Scott’s request that no funeral services be conducted but Memorial Contributions may be given to the Salvation Army or the Shriner’s Burns Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Jane Louise (Stickel) Hammaker (July 16, 2011)

In loving memory of all who knew Jane Louise (Stickel) Hammaker. She was born on September 19, 1957 in Greenville, Ohio, to the late Edwin Brooks & Cora Ann (Watson) Stickel. Jane was taken in a fatal car accident on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at approximately 1 AM. Also in the car was her boyfriend, Shane Wetzel age 44 now at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.


Jane worked at BASF for 16 years and was a member of the Elks, American Legion and VFW in Greenville.


Jane is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Roger Stickel.


Jane is survived by her children, Andrew R. Hammaker, age 32, Abby E. Hammaker, age 28, and Todd (Ashley) Hammaker, age 25; grandchildren, Chandler Elifritz, age 8, Brianna Hammaker, age 3, Miranda Hammaker, age 3; brothers and sisters, Paul Stickel, Phil (Renee) Stickel, and Diane (Jack) Baker; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 233 W. 3rd Street, Greenville, Ohio, with Rev. Fr. John White celebrant. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery, Greenville, Ohio. 


Family will receive friends on Friday, July 22, 2011 from 4-8 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio.

Alice Joan (Gantt) Clack age 74, of Bradford, Ohio, passed away at 8:30 A.M. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at her residence. Alice was born July 15, 1937 in Webster, Ohio, to the late Murray & Ethel Bernice (Hess) Gantt.

Alice was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of New Life Apostolic Church in Bradford.

Alice is survived by her husband of 50 years, John W. Clack Jr., whom she married June 17, 1961; son & daughter-in-law, Kenneth William & Melissa Clack of Tipp City; daughters & sons-in-law, Julie Ellen & Barry Lavey of Greenville and Melanie Joy & Ron Mowry of Greenville; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; brothers, Jack Gantt of California, Bob Gantt of Vandalia, Gene Gantt of Piqua, Dave Gantt of Union City, Indiana, Frank Gantt of Arcanum, Bill Gantt of Greenville and John Gantt of Dayton; sisters, Miriam Minnich of Bradford, Arlene Manning of Bradford and Peggy Brumbaugh of Greenville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Budd Welbaum (July 18, 2011)

Budd Welbaum, 77, of rural Greenville, died Monday, July 18, 2011 at Wayne Hospital. Mr. Welbaum was born in Darke County on June 2, 1934, the son of the late Harold E. and Marlene (Fout) Welbaum. He was a retired Franklin Township farmer, and a 30 year Franklin Monroe School Bus Driver, retiring in 1992. Budd was a member of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing cards in Pitsburg. Budd is survived by his wife Joann (Seman) Welbaum, whom he married June 27, 1954, Daughter Jill Kindell and husband John of Versailles; Sons Terry Welbaum and wife Yvonne of Bradford and Rick Welbaum and wife Penny of Greenville; Grandchildren Max and Lee Kindell, Judge Welbaum, Megan Poppaw and husband Cody, and Noah Welbaum; Great Grandchild Sophia Poppaw; Sisters Jacqueline Hogg and husband Lennox of Arcanum, Peggy Fiedler and husband Don of Lynn, Ohio, and Vickie Harmon of Florida; Brother Ted Welbaum of Arcanum. Vernon R. Spurlock (July 18, 2011)

Vernon R. Spurlock, age 66 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 8:05 P.M. Monday July 18, 2011 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center Dayton, Ohio. Vernon was born October 22, 1944 in Pineville, Kentucky and the son of the late James and Fannie (Brock) Spurlock.

Vernon was retired as a self-employed general contractor.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the U.S. Army and a member of the former Fellowship CB Club.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter Julia Marie Spurlock; sister Sarah Hoffman; brothers J.B., George, Robert, Willard, Ray and Wayne.

He is survived by his sons Thomas W. Spurlock and Timothy W. Spurlock both of Greenville. Also survived by 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, Brothers Harold Spurlock of Cincinnati, Henry Spurlock of Piqua and Gene Spurlock.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday July 25, 2011 in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with the Rev. Gary Oser officiating. Burial with Military Honors conducted by the Greenville Veteran’s Honor Guard will be held in the Abbottsville Cemetery. Stanley G. & Mary H. (Hesson) Hines ages 77 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away instantly on July 16, 2011 at 10:42 PM in Woodburn, Indiana as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Stanley was born August 30, 1933 in Spencerville, Ohio the son of the late Hugh G. & Florence (McKinley) Hines. He is preceded in death by numerous brothers & sisters.

Mary was born December 15, 1933 in Rossburg, Ohio, the daughter of the late Lewis C. & Bessie (Miller) Hesson. She is preceded in death by numerous brothers & sisters.

They were both members of Ansonia First Church of God. International Flying Farmers, Ohio Flying Farmers, & Cloud Busters Flying Farmers.

They were married on June 6, 1953 and were married for 58 years and are survived by their children & spouses: Marcia Hines Spearman and husband Patrick of Greenville, Stanley D. Hines of Ansonia, Cathy Cripps and husband Ted of New Carlisle, Ohio; grandchildren & spouses: Austie Spearman Woodall, Jennifer Spearman Whittington & husband Bryan, Justin & Amanda Hines, Joshua L. Hines, David, Tyler, Jonathan, &; Katelyn Cripps; great grandchildren: Faith, Cameron, &; Meleah; Stanley’s Brother &; sister: Jerry Hines of Selma, Indiana, Nancy Moore of Union City, Indiana; Mary’s sisters &; brothers in law: Marjorie &; John Kell of Greenville, Betty &; Ralph Mayo of Greenville; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, &; cousins.

Services will be held on Friday July 22, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Ansonia First Church of God 750 S. Main St. Ansonia, Ohio with Pastor Tim Schrock officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Twp. Cynthia M. "Cindy" Varvel, 60, of Arcanum, died Friday evening, July 15, 2011 at her residence. Mrs. Varvel was born in Troy on December 24, 1950, the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Lynch) Steele. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Greenville. She was employed at Sam's Club in Vandalia. Mrs. Varvel was preceded in death by her son Todd Allen Varvel. Cindy is survived by her husband Ernest "Ernie" Varvel, whom she married December 6, 1969; Daughters Kami Stump and husband Miles of Greenville and Keri Niekamp and husband Scott of St. Henry; Grandchildren Kelsi, Kody, and Marissa Roark, Preston Crist; Step Grandchildren Levi Stump and Kylar Niekamp; Brothers Nick Steele of California and Jeff Steele and wife Debbie of Pleasant Hill. Harold Ray Rhodehamel (July 15, 2011)

Harold Ray Rhodehamel, 67, of Greenville, died Friday, July 15, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Rhodehamel was born in Louisville, Kentucky on March 30, 1944, the son of the late Harold J. Rhodehamel and Laura (Shaw) Brown who survives. He was employed as an Electrician in Texas. Harold was preceded in death by his Son Kelly Rhodehamel and Brother John Scott Rhodehamel. He is survived by his Daughter Laura K. Stillwell and husband Matt of Texas; Grandchildren Hunter and Kellye Stillwell; Sister Patricia Miller of Greenville; and several Nieces and Nephews. Funeral Services will be held Noon on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the Kreitzer Funeral Home, Arcanum. Burial will follow in Ithaca Cemetery. Keith Edward Batty (July 14, 2011)

Keith Edward Batty age 67 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 6:27 P.M. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Keith was born December 18, 1943 in Greenville, Ohio, to the late Virgil J. “Red” & Eileen Anna (Goffena) Batty.

Keith retired in 2009 from Urb Drees Construction with 43 years of service. Keith served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Keith was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles; Versailles American Legion; Versailles Eagles; Friends of Hole Field; Versailles Athletic Boosters; and Lawrence Motorsports.

In addition to his parents; Keith is also preceded in death by a son, Douglas E. Batty on February 21, 1993.

Keith is survived by his wife, Edna M. (Drees) Batty whom he married November 7, 1964. He is also survived by a daughter & son-in-law, Brenda & Allen York of Versailles; son & daughter-in-law, Kevin E. & Jill Batty of Uniontown, Ohio; grandchildren, Aaron York, Kori York, Ryan York, Mason Batty, Mira Batty and Malone Batty; brothers & sisters-in-law, Dale & Paula Batty of Carrollton, Ohio, Gary & Karen Batty of Versailles and Bruce & Barb Batty of Tipp City; sister & brother-in-law, Suzanne & Randy Coffman of Cincinnati; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles with Rev. Fr. David Vincent celebrant. Carol S. (Strong) Brodrick (July 12, 2011)

Carol S. (Strong) Brodrick, 55, of Greenville, OH, passed away Tuesday morning, July 12, 2011 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

She was born September 20, 1955 in Hamilton, OH, daughter of the late Clarence P., Sr. and Ruby E. (Minyard) Strong. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger C. Brodrick on March 31, 2008; two half-brothers, Don and Charlie Strong; and a half-sister, Patsy Strong.

Carol was retired from Target in Richmond, IN, where she had worked for several years. She was a member of the Full Gospel Church.

She is survived by step children, Brad (Kim) Brodrick of Ft. Jefferson, OH, and Dustin Brodrick of Ansonia, OH; step grandchildren, Chloe, Ian, Hope, Sam, Jordan, and Jacob; a brother, Clarence “Hap” Strong of New Madison; a sister, Claren (John) Pack of Eaton, OH; nieces and nephews, Rick, Phillip, Brian, Lori, JoAnn, Marilee, John, and Sophie; and a sister-in-law, Melanie Strong of New Madison.

Services will be held Saturday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville, OH with Pastor Ken Harbaum officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens.

Russell M. Turner (July 10, 2011)

Russell M. Turner, 83, of Coldwater, OH, passed away late Sunday afternoon, July 10, 2011 at Heartland of Greenville.

He was born October 19, 1927 in Allen Township, Darke County, son of the late Balinger Berlin and Grace Ethel (Gray) Turner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, R. Wayne Turner; sisters, Anna Mary (Lloyd) Taylor, Ruth (Ralph) Schaar, Alice (Harold) Wentworth, Alta (Carroll) Peters and Mildred (Steve) Hocker: and brother-in-laws, Palmer Boyd, Dale Wentworth, Harold Rammel, Jim Gilmore, Buryl Wehrley.

Russell was retired from New Idea in Coldwater where he had worked for over 39 years. He was a veteran of the US Army having served at the end of WWII. He was a member of the Rossburg United Methodist Church and the Coldwater American Legion.

He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Boyd, Virginia Gilmore, June Wentworth and Norma Rammel; brothers, Junior (Phyllis) Turner, and Robert (Nadine) Turner; sister-in-law, Janet Turner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will Be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14 at the Oliver -Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with Pastor John Monroe officiating. Burial will follow in the Brock Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Rossburg United Methodist Church.

Treva I. Brenner, age 91 a resident of Rest Haven Nursing Home, passed away on Monday July 11, 2011 at 3:25 AM at Rest Haven. She was born October 26, 1919 in Greenville, Ohio the daughter of the late Frank & Emma (Brewer) Shepherd. She was a homemaker and a member of Stelvideo Christian Church. She graduated from Gettysburg School in 1939.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Lowell Brenner whom she married November 21, 1941; infant brother: John Shepherd; sister: Goldie Brewer.

She is survived by her children and spouses: Lanny & Martha Brenner of Greenville, Randy & Annette Brenner of Greenville, Tamai & Craig Fenstermaker of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday July 14, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Stelvideo Christian Church 6808 Church Street, Stelvideo, Ohio with Rev. Joe Soley and Pastor Vernon Rodeffer officiating. William R. Custenborder (July 6, 2011)

William R. Custenborder age 82 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 10:18 P.M. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. William was born December 30, 1928 in Sidney, Ohio, to the late L. Raymond & Fanny (Carey) Custenborder.

William graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1946, then served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Lewis, Washington from 1951-1953 as a Personnel Management Specialist. Mr. Custenborder married Frances Jean Bouquot on July 18, 1953. She passed away on January 20, 1967.

Mr. Custenborder is survived by his wife, Catherine Ratermann whom he married on March 23, 1968; three children, Douglas (and Dotty) Custenborder of Greenville, Carol (and Gary) Kunze of Kettering and Patrick (and Kim) Custenborder of Versailles. He also was the proud grandparent of seven grandchildren, Clint Howell, Ryan (and Brittany) Kunze, Mitch Custenborder, Cheryl (and Jeff) Probst, Brad Kunze, Connor Custenborder and Kelsey Custenborder. Mr. Custenborder is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Custenborder was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Custenborder; and two sisters, RuthEllen Sellers and Rosemary Blake.

Mr. Custenborder worked at the Citizens National Bank in Sidney for 17 years, the last 10 years as Vice President and Manager of the Russia Branch. For the next 23 years, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Versailles Savings and Loan Co., retiring in 1992 as President, and continuing as Chairman of the Board. During his lifetime, Mr. Custenborder served on many Boards and Organizations, including Sidney Jaycees; Finance Officer with the American Legion; Russia Civic Association; Versailles Development Association; Versailles Swimming Pool Board; Worch Memorial Public Library Board of Trustees; Board of Trustees of the Ohio Savings and Loan League; Versailles Area Foundation Fund and Versailles Lions Club. He was a long time lector at St. Denis Catholic Church and a member of the Senior Servers. Bill and Bud Sutter started a weekly men’s prayer group 11 years ago which has continued to this day.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles with Rev. Fr. David Vincent celebrant. Burial will follow at 1:30 P.M. in Graceland Cemetery in Sidney. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. and Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:00 A.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles. Military Honors will be conducted by the Versailles Veterans Honor Guard at 10:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home. B. Catherine Sharp age 95 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 5:55 A.M. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Dayton Heart & Vascular Hospital at Good Samaritan in Dayton. Catherine was born January 9, 1916 in Adams Township, Darke County, to the late William & Mae (Routzong) Michael.

Catherine was retired. She was a active member of the First United Methodist Church in Greenville; United Methodist Women’s Organization; Past President and life member of the Greenville V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post #7262; and a former member of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, Catherine is also preceded in death by her brothers, Lowell Michael, Dale Michael, Joyce Michael and William Michael Jr.; and sisters, Mabel Shaffer and Ruth Rhoades.

Catherine is survived by her husband of 75 years, R. Eugene Sharp, whom she married July 3, 1936; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church 202 West Fourth Street Greenville, with Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Cemetery (new section). Mildred Catherine “Katie” McKibben age 92 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 6:42 P.M. on Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Sterling House in Greenville. Katie was born July 16, 1918 in Yorkshire, Ohio, to the late Harrison & Clara (Fritz) Johnston.

Katie was a homemaker. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington.

In addition to her parents, Katie is also preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. McKibben on July 26, 1983 whom she married October 5, 1940; daughter, Debra E. McKibben; brothers, Otis, Bob & Ralph Johnston; and sister, Sally Hartle.

Edna Marie Rhodehamel (July 1, 2011)

Edna Marie Rhodehamel, 88, of Greenville, formerly of Arcanum, died Friday, July 1, 2011 at The Brethren Retirement Community. Mrs. Rhodehamel has been a resident of the Brethren Retirement Community since September 2000. She was born in Bradford on February 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Harley and Bertha (Yoder) Hoover. She was a member the former Ithaca United Methodist Church, where she was very active in the United Methodist Women and other church functions. She is currently a member Trinity United Methodist Church, Arcanum. Edna was a former Librarian and Teacher at Arcanum Butler and Greenville City School Systems retiring July 1, 1988. Edna was a former member of the GEA, OEA, and NEA. She was member of the Darke County Center for the Arts. She was preceded in death by her husband Doyle E. Rhodehamel, who died October 6, 1982, Sister Mary Zirkle and Brother Galen Hoover. John L. Durr (July 1, 2011)

John L. Durr, 88, of Greenville, passed away early Friday morning, July 1, 2011 at Heartland of Greenville.

He was born April 21, 1923 in Darke County, son of the late Roy C. and Wilma B. (Ashman) Durr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; and a brother, Thomas Durr.

John was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps having served in WWII where he was an ex prisoner of war and had received the Purple Heart. He was retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base where he had worked for 35 years as a statistician. He was a member of the D.A.V., American Legion and V.F.W.

He is survived by his second wife, Mary Frances (Coppess) Spencer-Durr; two daughters, Linda L. Sheline, and Dianna L. Durr; a step daughter, Linda O'Grady; 2 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; and 8 step great grandchildren.

A memorial service with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be held at 11 a.m on Friday, July 8 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with the Chaplain Sam Hoeflich officiating. Private burial will take place in the Nashville Cemetery near West Milton.

Rhys A. Bowman (June 29, 2011)

Rhys A. Bowman, age 55 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 5:26 P.M. Wednesday June 29, 2011 at Miami Valley Hospital Dayton, Ohio. He was born August 16, 1955 in Piqua, Ohio and the son of the late Roscoe Bowman & the late June E. (Bowman) Sodders.

Rhys was a loyal and faithful employee for Buchy Food Service for the past 32 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge all of Greenville. Rhys enjoyed golf, the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Browns, Dayton Flyers and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Rhys is survived by his wife Pamela L. (Mathews) Bowman of Greenville. They were married May 31, 1980. Also by his daughters Amanda Lee Bowman at home, Natalie Anne Bowman also at home and her fiancé Tyler Hinkle of Greenville. Brothers and sisters in law Randall & Rhonda Bowman and Regan & Sue Bowman all of Greenville. Nieces and Nephews Julie (Jason) Willis, Tiffany (Jeremy) Fine, Heather (Lance) Riegle, Heidi (Tate) Sutton, Brett, Holli & Haley Bowman. His mother in law Joan Mathews, sisters in law Rose Mathews, Liz (Dirk) Lewis and Charity (Tom) Kinnison. Nieces and nephews in law Kristi Anderson, Bridgit & (Steve) Kerber, Curtis Dysinger, Kayla Kinnison, Leah & Ripley Lewis.

Rhys will be deeply missed by all of his many friends and customers.
