Basil C. Subler (October 8, 2014)

Basil C. Subler age 98, of Versailles, Ohio passed away at 2:30 P.M. on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy. Basil was born July 12, 1916 in Darke County, Ohio to the late Felix Edward & Estella (Bulcher) Subler.

Basil is survived by his wife of 76 years, Annabel M. (Apple) Subler whom he married August 20, 1938; son & daughter-in-law, James & Diana Subler of Versailles; grandchildren, James Subler Jr. of Greenville, Ohio, Shane Subler of Bethesda, Maryland, Lucas Subler of Versailles and Lauren Subler of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Ryan Subler and Nathan Subler; half-brother, John E. & Isabella Subler of Versailles; half-sister, Doris Monnin of Versailles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Basil was also preceded in death by his sons, Wayne Subler in infancy and John K. Subler; brothers, Carl and Kenneth Subler; sister, Alverda Bohman; and half-sister, Mary Ann Berger.

Basil served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Basil was inducted into the Army on August 10, 1943. On August 7, 1944 he landed in Omaha Beach and was attached to General Patton’s 3rd Army. Basil fought in 4 Campaigns, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Basil received 4 Bronze Stars for his service to his Country. Basil worked in the Trucking Industry for over 50 years. He retired in 1980 as Vice President of Subler Transfer in Versailles. Basil was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles and served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Basil served on the Versailles School and Library Boards for 8 years, served as former Commander of the Versailles V.F.W., Past Chairman of Versailles Poultry Days in 1969 and Charter member of the Versailles Eagles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 13, 2014 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles with Rev. Fr. James Simons celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Valbert Cemetery in Versailles with Military Honors conducted by the Versailles Veteran’s Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. and Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles.
