Betty A. Foster (October 26, 2014)

Betty A. Foster, 92, of Greenville, Ohio and formerly of New Madison, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville. Betty was born on June 2, 1922 in Hollansburg, Ohio to the late Carl and Maude (Cox) Moore.

Betty retired from Corning Glass in Greenville. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in New Madison and the American Legion #708 in Hollansburg. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Foster, two sisters, two nephews, a niece and one grandson.

Betty is survived by a daughter, Roberta Vaugh of Lexington, Kentucky; three sons, Terry Joe Foster of Hollansburg, Larry Lee and Betty K. Foster of Hollansburg, and Jerry Dale and Kathy Foster Harrodsburg, Kentucky; nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, six great, great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew; a sister, Lodene Cutts of British Columbia, and a brother, Jay Moore of Greenville.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Braund Pope Funeral Home in New Madison on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Sam Shilot officiating. Burial will follow in the Hollansburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to American Legion Post #708 in Hollansburg or State of the Heart Hospice in Greenville. Scott B. Tye (October 26, 2014)

Scott B. Tye, 53, of Troy, OH, passed away early Sunday morning, October 26, 2014 at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

He was born August 6, 1961 in Toledo, son of Clayton and Lois (Bails) Tye of Toledo.

Scott had worked as a store manager for Staples. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps.
He had attended Emry-Riddle Aeronautical University and graduated from Ohio State University. He was a member of the Ginghamsburg Church and the American Legion and was an avid Ohio State fan.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Barbara A. (Liette) Tye, whom he married September 17, 1997; sons, Matthew and Joshua; a sister, Shawna; nieces and nephews; and his best friends, Scully and Spooky. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Steven Burdette for his exceptional care.

A service with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, October 31, at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home, 1000 N. Broadway, Greenville, OH. It was Scott’s request that everyone wear their favorite Ohio State clothes for the services.

John Robert Searls (October 26, 2014)

John Robert Searls, age 88, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 12:40 AM at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. He was born on October 7, 1926 in Glouster, Ohio, to the late Benjamin & Elizabeth (Alderman) Searls.

John is survived by his wife of 63 years Sue (Manuel) Searls of Greenville; daughters, Diana Baker, Rebecca Searls and Gretchen Price; son and daughter in law, Mark & Linda Searls; grandchildren, Jahn and Christopher Price and Courtney, Kimberly and Mathew Searls; 10 great grandchildren; and nephew, Bob Searls.

He was a member of the United States Navy serving in WWII. Also a member of the First Universalist Church of New Madison, Greenville Masonic Lodge #143 for over 50 years, VFW, Elks, Greenville Toastmasters and Randolph County Art Association. John worked at Bornell Supply Company in Piqua, Ohio, and then worked at American Aggregates for 17 years. John really enjoyed Painting.

There will be a private memorial service held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. Norbert V. Schlater (October 26, 2014)

Norbert V. Schlater, age 86, of Versailles, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 5:48 AM at Versailles Health Care Center, Versailles, Ohio. He was born on Feb. 17, 1928 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio, to the late Fred & Bernadine (Albers) Schlater.

Norbert is survived by his sons and daughters in law, Ronald & Diana Schlater of St. Paris, Ohio, Roger & Shirley Schlater of Versailles, Ohio, David & Mary Jo Schlater of St. Henry, Ohio, Stan & Rita Schlater of Versailles, Ohio, Mike & Jayne Schlater of St. Mary’s, Ohio, Mark & Shirley Schlater of St. Paris, Ohio, Denis & Gerri Schlater of Coldwater, Ohio, and Dale & Kathy Schlater of Versailles, Ohio; daughters and sons in law, Karen & Jeff Keiser of Troy, Ohio, Vicky & Stan Nuding of Celina, Ohio, Jane & James Puckett of Urbana, Ohio, and Lois & David Bruns of Versailles, Ohio; 38 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren; brother and sister in law, Elmer & Carol Schlater of Sidney, Ohio; sisters and brother in law, Delores Peltier of Russia, Ohio, Velma & Jiggs Thobe of Maria Stein, Ohio, and Marlene Crusey of Sidney, Ohio; sisters in law, Norma Schlater of Ft. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Vera (Schulze) Schlater whom he married on May 4, 1949; great granddaughter, Taylor Griesdorn; brothers, Herbert, Al, Vernon and Urban Schlater; sister Alma Schlater; brothers in law, Joseph Crusey and Robert Peltier; and sisters in law, Lucille Schlater and Nettie Schlater.

Norbert retired from Baumfolder as a machinist before working at the Stillwater Valley Golf Course in Versailles for 17 years. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, Minster Eagles and New Bremen Senior Citizens. He enjoyed playing baseball in the Western Ohio League for many years, golfing and watching his grandchildren play their sporting events. He loved fishing, playing euchre and was an avid Reds fan.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 10:30 AM at St. Denis Catholic Church, Versailles, Ohio, with Rev. Fr. Jim Simons celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Martins Catholic Church Cemetery, Osgood, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 2-8 PM at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, Ohio, as well as on Thursday from 9-10 AM at the funeral home. Donald E. “Don” Baker (October 25, 2014)

Donald E. “Don” Baker, 63, of Greenville, passed away Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the VA Medical Center Hospice Care Unit in Dayton.

He was born February 27, 1951 in Dayton, son of the late Donald E., Sr. and Alice (Bogan) Baker.

Don was retired from the former Corning Glass in Greenville. He was a veteran of the US Air Force having served during the Vietnam Era.

He is survived by his brothers, Mark (Jeannie) Baker of Greenville, Steve (companion, Marty) Baker of Indianapolis, Kevin (Dottie) Baker of Greenville, and Scott (companion, Becky) Baker of Pleasant Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life with Veterans honors will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, October 29 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 p.m. till 7 p.m.

William Dennis Rich (October 25, 2014)

William Dennis Rich, age 57, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at 8:17 AM at his residence. He was born on August 29, 1957 in Dayton, Ohio, to William Rich of Troy, Ohio and the late Betty (Sensenbaugh) Rich.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Bonita (Beisner) Rich of Greenville whom he married on April 23, 1983; sons and daughter in law, Travis & Tess Rich, Brandon Rich and Aaron Rich all of Greenville; grandsons, Landon, Logan, Liam and Larkin Rich; brother, David Rich; sister, Stacy Niezgoda; as well as their spouses and families.

He worked at Medway Tool Corporation in Troy, Ohio, as a Tool Maker.

There will be a service held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 2:30 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio, with Pastor Eric Knight officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens, Greenville, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 12:30 PM until the time of the service.

Tom Magoto Sr (October 24, 2014)

Tom Magoto Sr, age 89, of Versailles OH passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014 at 5:10 PM at the Versailles Health Care Center. Tom was born Jan. 17, 1925 in Darke County, OH to the late Raymond “Frenchie” and Zita (Dapore) Magoto.

Tom is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma J (Cox) Magoto whom he married on Jan. 28, 1949; sons & daughters-in-law Tom Jr “Butch” and Shila (Dapore) Magoto of Versailles; Jim and Sharon (Garrison)Magoto of Versailles; daughters and sons-in-law Teresa and Nick Knapke of Versailles, Jan and Andy Knapke of Versailles, and Missy and Jon Brooks of Miamisburg, OH; Grandchildren: Wendolyn (Magoto)Groff of Mocksville, NC; Mandy (Magoto) Egan of Los Angeles, CA; Kim (Magoto) Brooks of Versailles; John Magoto of Denver, CO; Brian Magoto of Minot, ND; Mike Williams of Versailles; Tim Magoto of Franklin, OH; Jenny (Magoto) Subler of Versailles; Adam Keiser of Versailles, Danielle Keiser of Covington, OH; Alex Brooks of Miamisburg, OH and Jake Brooks of Miamisburg, OH; 20 great-grandchildren: Logan, Makenna, Xaiden and Kiahna Groff, Graham Egan, Adia, Kierce, Nigel and Xavier Brooks, Katie, James and Alex Magoto, Matthew, Jack, Henry and Grace Subler, Cody and Conner Williams and Bryson and Colten Keiser; Brothers and sister-in-law Dave Magoto of Versailles and Frank and Judy Magoto of Versailles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Tom was also preceded in death by his sisters and brothers-in-law Alice and Jim “Chick” Swisher; Julie and Mike Hiatt; and brother and sister-in-law Dick and Dottie Magato.

Tom graduated from Versailles High School with the Class of 1943. He attended Miami University in 1943 for a semester, and then was drafted into the U.S. Army. Tom served from 1943 to 1946 in France and Germany and the Rhine River to Austria, fighting in the Battle of The Bulge and the Battle of the Rhine River. He served in General Patton’s 3rd Army, 93rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squad in the 13th Division and received the following awards: American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal World War II. After returning home from WWII he went back to Miami University in 1946 and graduated in 1950 with a BS in education. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.

Tom then began working with the Darke County Health Department as a sanitarian in 1950 and this was the beginning of his 42 year career with the Ohio Department of Health. During these 42 years he advanced from county sanitarian to Dayton Southwest District Sanitarian to Chief of Accident Prevention and Safety in Columbus and retired in November 1972 as the Chief of Environmental Safety for the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus, OH. He was instrumental in implementing many new and innovative safety programs for the Ohio Department of Health. One of the best known of these safety programs is the Heimlich Maneuver. Tom was trained by Dr. Henry Heimlich and then Tom implemented the Heimlich maneuver instructions throughout the State of Ohio. Tom was on the adjunct faculty at Wright State University and spoke many times to Professor Jim Lucas’s students during the 1970’s and 1980’s. He is a past president of the Ohio Environmental Health Association, past director of the National Environmental Health Association, and commissioned in the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Some of the many awards he received include the prestigious National Environmental Health Association Award and the Ohio Public Health Association Award. Two of his best friends and business associates were Jim Lucas and John Todd.
Tom was also a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was proud to have served as the Master of Ceremonies (emcee) at the Versailles Memorial Day Services for over 36 years. He was one of the founding fathers of the Versailles Youth Baseball Programs. Tom was the “Voice of the Tigers” for 52 years as the public address announcer at the home Versailles football games. Tom was the Quarterback for the 1942 first ever undefeated and untied Versailles football team. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church where he was an usher for many years. He was a member of the St. Denis K of C and a member of the Versailles Eagles. He was very active as a baseball and softball player for many years, and was also an umpire and officiated basketball and football games.

He was proud of his strong family association with his wife and children and grandchildren. A favorite activity that he enjoyed with his wife, Norma was Ballroom Dancing and Big Band music.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 10:30 AM at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles with Rev. Jim Simons celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Valbert Cemetery in Versailles with Military Honors conducted by the Versailles Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 from 4-8 PM at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles, OH. There will be a prayer service conducted by the Versailles K of C on Tuesday at 7:45 PM at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Autism Society of Dayton, Alzheimer’s Association or American Diabetes Association.

Billy “Little Joe” Thompson (October 23, 2014)

Billy “Little Joe” Thompson, 74, of Greenville, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 23, 2014 at Heartland of Greenville.

He was born June 10, 1940 in Greenville, son of the late Robert and Delores (Boyer) Thompson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Dixie Beckett, and two brothers, Dwight and Tommy Thompson.

Joe was a bartender for the majority of his life as he enjoyed working with the public and just enjoying life. He bartended at the former Sater Lanes and retired from the Greenville Moose Lodge. He was a member of the Greenville Moose and the Moose Legion as well as the Sons of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Cheryl (Dickey) Thompson, whom he married October 24, 1988; daughters, Kelly (Victor) Garza of Elkhart, IN, Melinda (Trent) Thompson of Versailles, Michele (Troy) Stewart of Union City, IN; sons, Scott (Becky) Thompson, Rodney (Valerie) Thompson, Troy Thompson all of Union City, OH, and Joe (Stacey) Thompson of Union City, IN; 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; a sister, Linda (Kerry) Ungericht of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 29 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with Pastor Gary Oser. Burial will follow in the Greenville Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. with the Moose Lodge having a Lodge of Sorrow at 7:45 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Heartland Hospice.

Thelma, “Lucille” Fourman (October 14, 2014)

Thelma, “Lucille” Fourman, 91, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2014, in Sedona Arizona. Lucille was born in Fletcher, Ohio and spent 85 years of her life in her beloved New Madison. She moved to Sedona, Arizona 5 years ago to be closer to her family. Lucille, was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil; parents, Claude and Tress Crickmore; sister, Pearl Eley; and brothers, Clarence and Clyde Crickmore. She is survived by her daughter, Denise, son-in-law, Patrick; granddaughter, Meagan and her husband , Rob; and 2 granddaughters, Kalyn and Danica. She also left behind nieces: Janice Riegle, Phyllis Eley, Diana Sanderson, Barbara Watson, Claudia Crickmore and a nephew, Gary Crickmore; and many grand- and great grand-nieces and nephews.

Lucille was truly a “figure” in New Madison. She was active in the community, a 50 year member of the Eta Pi Kappa Sorority, and working on the school calendar for many years. She loved and participated in the School and Darke County fairs. She drove the school bus for 17 years, and worked on the election board for 40 plus years. Lucille was also a member of the Eagles where she loved to go and dance, and play her beloved card game Euchre. Lucille absolutely loved music which continued to the end of her life. Many may have known she played the piano, but may not have known she played the violin as well.

Lucille really enjoyed traveling. She traveled to California twice a year for over 30 years which included every Christmas. Some of these trips were car trips with her friends, to places such as Branson, New York, Kentucky, Michigan, Virginia, Las Vegas to name a few. One of Lucille’s favorite trips was her trip to Hawaii, with a stop at Pearl Harbor where her husband Cecil had been stationed during WWII. The places she visited provided her with opportunities to be with family, friends and always meet new people.

Lucille will be missed by her family and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 10:00 am at the New Madison United Methodist Church with Pastor Carol Duffield officiating. Friends and family may visit on Saturday at the New Madison United Methodist Church from 9 am until time of service. Burial will follow in the Greenmound Cemetery. Dolores M. Marshall, 83 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Thursday October 23, 2014 at 11:28 AM at Reid Hospital Hospice Unit. She was born April 29, 1931 in Greenville, Ohio the daughter of the late Nelson & Gladys (Miller) matchett.

She was a homemaker and member of Open Door Church of God.

She is survived by her daughter & son in law: Jacklyn & Zdenek Beloch of Greenville; grandchildren: Jacob Baker, & Chastity Baker; and 4 great grandchildren.

Charles H. Voigt, 77 of Celina, Ohio passed away on Wednesday October 22, 2014 at 8:34 PM at Gardens of Celina. He was born September 13, 1937 in Greenville, Ohio the son of the late Ernest & Ethel (Harlan) Voigt. He served in the United States Army. He worked in gunsmithing. He was a member of the American Legion, Ridgeville, Indiana.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife: Barbara (Holden) Voigt; brother: Robert “Bob” Voigt.

Margaret E. Yount (October 23, 2014)

Margaret E. Yount age 88, of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 12:11 A.M. on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. Margaret was born January 5, 1926 in Portland, Indiana to the late Alva & Dorothy (Mills) Journay.

Margaret is survived by her sons & daughter-in-law, Keith & Carol Yount of Union and Mike Yount of Greenville; daughter & son-in-law, Cathy & Tom White of Union; grandchildren, Gina Roberts, Ty & Holly Yount, Brian White and Lori & Mike Study; great-grandchildren, Morgan Roberts, Jocelynn Clark and Evie Clark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Yount; daughter, Linda Yount; brothers, Paul Journay and Richard Journay; and sister, Garnet Tomlinson.

Margaret retired from Neff Lettering in Greenville where she worked in shipping and receiving. Margaret was a member of the EUM Church in Greenville.

Ron E. Van Vickle (October 20, 2014)

Ron E. Van Vickle, age 81, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 10:14 PM at his residence. He was born on October 16, 1933 in Union City, Indiana, to the late Joseph & Martha (Wasson) Van Vickle.

Ron is survived by his wife Mary Ann (Edger) Van Vickle of Greenville, whom he married on October 15, 1955; sons and daughters in law, Joe & Cheryl Van Vickle of Greenville and Jim & Jennifer Van Vickle of Waukesha, WI; daughter and son in law, LeAnn & Steve Schlamb of Monroe, OH; grandsons, Zachary and Jessica Van Vickle of Greenville, Patrick Schlamb of Monroe, OH, Nicholas Schlamb of Monroe, OH, and Connor Van Vickle of Waukesha, WI; sister, Susan Weisenbarger of Arcanum; best friend, Sudz; first cousins, Richard Wasson Union City, IN and William Wasson of OH; as well as extended family and numerous friends.

He was a member of the United States Navy being honorably discharged as an E-3 Corpsman in 1957. He worked at the former Westinghouse, Union City, IN; Retired from a career as a Darke County Law Enforcement Officer. Joann (Osborne) Deal, 64, of Union City, Ohio, passed away on October 20,2014 at at her residence. Joann was born on July 1,1950 in Jellico, Tennessee to the late Lawrence and Ruby (Richmond)Osborne.

Joann loved to go camping and fishing. She enjoyed quilting and painting figurines. Joann's most precious past time was spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, Joann is preceded in death by her husband, Richard N. Deal Sr., two sons, Richard N. Deal Jr. and Benjamin D. Deal and two brothers.

Joann is survived by two sons, Keith Deal and fiance, Denae Stonerock of Union City, Ohio and Vincent Deal and Melissa Sparks of New Madison; five grandchildren, Sara, Chanler, Joey, and Chelsea Deal; three brothers, Edward, Jack, and Ronnie Deal; and a sister, Sue Lawson.

Donald E. Swank 89, of Greenville, Ohio passed away Monday, October 20, 2014 at Miami Valley Hospital Dayton, Ohio.

He was born May 24, 1925 in Ft. Jefferson, Ohio, son of the late Ira and Pauline (Foureman) Swank. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Swank.

Don was a farmer, a lifelong poultry raiser and worked at Union City Body Co. for 25 years. He was a member of Community United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Wanda J. (Cool) Swank of 68 years, whom he married in 1946; children, Steven Swank, of Greenville, Niles (Becky) Swank of Greenville, Bruce (Julie) Swank of Troy, Stephanie Sherry of Greenville; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a brother, C. William (Helen) Swank of Columbus, OH.

Services will be held Saturday, October 25 at 10:00AM at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with Todd Reish officiating. Burial will follow in the Mote Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nina (Corn) Quinn of Greenville whom he married on September 21, 1957; sons and daughters in law, Tim (Juanita) Quinn of Greenville, Ed (Debbie) Quinn of Greenville, Jeff (Malinda) Quinn of Greenville, Kevin (Michelle) Quinn of Versailles; daughter Pam Poston of Greenville; 4 grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren; brothers Ebbert Quinn of Columbus, OH, John (Sharon) Quinn of New Weston and Jack (Beverly) Quinn of Greenville; sister, Mary Alice Wojciechowski of Edwall, Washington; sisters in law, Norma (Charles) Berk of Tipp City, Wanda (Jerry) Flayler of Tipp City and Sandy Kirkpatrick of Greenville; brothers in law, Ronnie (Linda) Corn of Tipp City, Steve Corn of Troy and Jerry Corn of Van Wert; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Norma Jean (Kennon) Garrison (October 16, 2014)

Norma Jean (Kennon) Garrison, age 91 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 1:30 P.M. Thursday October 16, 2014 at State of the Heart Hospice Care Center Greenville, Ohio. Norma was born January 18, 1923 in Jackson Township Darke County, Ohio and the daughter of the late Elwood and Artie (James) Kennon.

She retired in 1986 as an executive secretary at the former Cadillac Gage Company of Greenville, where she had been employed for 27 years.

Norma was a 1941 graduate of Union City, Indiana High School, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville where she had served as a Deacon of the Church, a former member of the Criterion Literary Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Lady Bug Garden Club, Greenville Elk’s Lodge and the former Greenville Country Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Max Garrison in 1988; Sister Marcelle Penrod and Brother James Kennon.

Norma is survived by her son Kristopher Kim Garrison of Greenville; Sister Patsy Gordon of Fairborn; brother in law David Penrod of Beavercreek and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday October 21, 2014 in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with Rev. Dr. John Person officiating. Wilbur E. Mullen (October 12, 2014)

Wilbur E. Mullen of Greenville, OH died peacefully at the age of 96 on Sunday, October 12. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Lena Belle Olwin Mullen, their daughters Joan (Tom) Mullen Woods of Portland, OR, Jacquelyn (Bill) Morrissey of Anchorage, AK, Judy (Mitch) Roth of Greenville, OH and Jeanne (Jim Lunt) Mullen of Berkeley, CA, his grandchildren Moya Woods, Haley Morrissey, Benjamin (Megan) Hart, Michelle Hart, Allyson (Nate) King, Ashlynn Roth, Morgan Lunt and Tobias Lunt, his great-grand-daughters Ella Hart and Addison Hart, his sisters Janet (William) Hoffman of Windber, PA and Winifred Donaldson of Goodlettsville, TN, his sister-in-law Mardell Mullen of Davidsville, PA and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Edgar and Gerald Mullen.

Wilbur was born in Windber, PA, the son of Nellie Johns Mullen and John Edward Mullen and as a young man, began upon his path of peacemaking and Christian service. A lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren, Wilbur participated in volunteer work camps in Europe and Civilian Public Service. He graduated from Manchester College in Peace Studies, earned a Master’s Degree in Social and Technical Assistance from Haverford College and became an ordained minister in 1954. He worked in various capacities in Europe and in the US with Brethren Volunteer Service and on the Brethren Service Commission, World Ministries Commission of the Church of the Brethren General Board in Elgin, IL, before moving to Greenville in 1972 to join the administration at the Brethren Retirement Community. As CEO he shepherded the BRC through bankruptcy and restructuring, allowing the Home to strengthen and thrive.

Wilbur was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Greenville and served within numerous church, community and professional organizations. In 2010, he was named Outstanding Senior Citizen of Darke County and was inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame the following year. Always active, Wilbur delighted in challenging anyone of any age to a game of tennis, racquetball, handball, golf, pool or corn hole and in later years, Wii bowling, utterly delighting in the camaraderie and sport. He devoted his life to serving others, fostering connections and tolerance between people and furthering peace.

Freda is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Jeff & Arvilla Brandon of Arcanum and Jim & Marlene Brandon of Beavercreek; daughter & son-in-law, Joyce & Keith Arnett of Laura; 9 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; brother & sister-in-law, Edward & Donna Hess of Union City, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Freda was also preceded in death by her husband, Cyril Brandon whom she married June 12, 1937 and was the former Police Chief of Versailles; daughter, Janet E. Helsel; granddaughters, Michelle Apple, Sheryl Apple Helsel Wright, Deanna Brandon Redder and Alyssa Neff; brothers, George, James and Richard Hess; and sisters, Zella Huffman and Joan Madry.

Freda was a homemaker and formerly worked at Subler Transfer in Versailles, Union City Body Company in Union City, Indiana and the Holiday Inn in Troy. Freda attended the Living Waters Ministries in Versailles and was a former member of the Versailles Order of Eastern Star.

Helen M. Hanes, age 87 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 9:00 A.M. Monday October 13, 2014 at the Brethren Retirement Community Greenville, Ohio. Helen was born April 17, 1927 Union City, Ohio and the daughter of the late Howard and Mae (Robinson) Kester.

Helen graduated in 1945 from Jackson High School in Union City, Ohio. She retired from Mississinawa Valley School’s in 1989, after 22 years of service as a school aid. Helen along with her husband were farmers in the Union City, Ohio area where she enjoyed staying active with the family farm. Helen was involved in many organizations and councils including: Darke County Farm Bureau, Ohio Farm Bureau Camping Committees, Darke County 4-H organizations and was a member of Hillgrove Church and recently attended First Methodist Church of Greenville. She also enjoyed volunteering with many Darke County community service organizations as well. Helen especially enjoyed attending her family’s activities at the schools, sporting events and certainly at The Great Darke County Fair.

Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years Donald. Also, brother Lowell Kester & sister Wanda Kester Furby.

She is survived by sons David (Vickie) Hanes, James (Amy) Hanes both of Union City, Ohio and John (Diane) Hanes of Elkhart, IN. She was born October 12, 1926 in North Belle Vernon, PA, daughter of the late Orlan D. and Helen (Baird) Jarrett. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ernest C. "Ozzie" Osborne, whom she married on July 13, 1946; daughters, Karen L. and Jennifer A. Osborne; sisters, Hazel Cantarell and Eleanor Hughes; brother, Robert Jarrett

Ruth had been employed in the past at Jamesway and Harts department stores, as a merchandiser for American Greetings, and a co-owner of The Flatlands General Stores in Rossburg, Ohio. She was currently employed at Wayne Health Care where she has been active for many years in the Wayne Hospital Auxiliary as the Reception Desk Coordinator.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Michael Bowman of Rossburg; son, Richard Osborne of Los Angeles, CA; granddaughter and husband, Sadie Bowman and Joe Bourgingon of Portland, OR; grandsons, Zane Bowman of Flagler Beach, FL and Wyatt Bowman of Portland, OR; and several nieces and nephews.

Joanne Marcia Lear (October 11, 2014)

Joanne Marcia Lear, age 78 of Greenville, Ohio passed away Saturday October 11, 2014 in the emergency room of Wayne Healthcare Center Greenville, Ohio. Joanne was born April 24, 1936 in Darke County, Ohio and the daughter of the late Bernard and Ruby (Ashman) Swank.

Joanne was a 1954 graduate of Greenville High School where she was a varsity cheerleader and then attended Miami University where she studied business and education.

She met her husband Raymond Lear at Miami University and they became a “Miami Merger” and were married October 26, 1957.

Joanne and Raymond settled in Greenville in 1960 where Joanne gave birth to two sons Randy and Rob in April of 1960 and March of 1963 respectively.
Her two boys were her passion and together with Ray they raised them to graduate as “Fighting Green Waves”. During those years Joanne was instrumental in supporting school spirit and extracurricular activities with great vigor.

In addition to raising a family and supporting Raymond’s career, she worked as a substitute teacher and as an employment counselor for the Council on Rural Services. She was also a big supporter of D.E.C.A. for a number of years and was very active in tennis, golf and exercising.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Beverly and a brother Steve.

Joanne is survived by her husband of 57 years Raymond H. Lear of Greenville. Also son Randy and wife Patty of Medina, Ohio and their children Samuel, Grace and Tommy; son Robert and wife Wendy of Jupiter, Florida and their 3 daughters Taylor, Brittany and Morgan; sisters Norma (Jack) Unland of Greenville, Cheryl (Ned) Denlinger of Englewood, Ohio, and Linda Deeter of Greenville, sister In law Dorothy Greenawald of Charlotte, NC., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Norbert “Norb” G. Goubeaux (September 1, 2014)

Norbert “Norb” G. Goubeaux, age 67, of Columbus, OH passed away at 2:15 PM on Monday September 1, 2014 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. He was born February 14, 1947 in Versailles, OH to the late Cletus and Dorothy Goubeaux.

Norbert was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he earned several medals, including the Vietnamese Service Medal and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. He proudly served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and earned several commendations and medals in the Motor Vehicle department including, Presidential Unit Commendation Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. In 1981, Norbert began his business Juno Custom Remodelers in the Columbus area. He took great pride in his work and in making his customers’ homes beautiful. Norbert loved spending time with his family, talking politics, and enjoyed working on projects with his son-in-laws.

Norbert is survived by his daughters, Melissa (Kevin) Writesel and Michelle (Brian) Woods; their mother, Judith Goubeaux; grandchildren, Sean, Collin, and Kylie; sisters, Melva Barga and Diane Carter; brothers, Leonard Goubeaux, Ivan Goubeaux, and Wayne Goubeaux; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Goubeaux; sister in law, Ruth Goubeaux; and brother in law, Gene Barga.

Sam was employed at Laux Farm Seed Services. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1974. Sam loved her Lord and spending time with family.

Basil C. Subler age 98, of Versailles, Ohio passed away at 2:30 P.M. on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy. Basil was born July 12, 1916 in Darke County, Ohio to the late Felix Edward & Estella (Bulcher) Subler.

Basil is survived by his wife of 76 years, Annabel M. (Apple) Subler whom he married August 20, 1938; son & daughter-in-law, James & Diana Subler of Versailles; grandchildren, James Subler Jr. of Greenville, Ohio, Shane Subler of Bethesda, Maryland, Lucas Subler of Versailles and Lauren Subler of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Ryan Subler and Nathan Subler; half-brother, John E. & Isabella Subler of Versailles; half-sister, Doris Monnin of Versailles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Basil was also preceded in death by his sons, Wayne Subler in infancy and John K. Subler; brothers, Carl and Kenneth Subler; sister, Alverda Bohman; and half-sister, Mary Ann Berger.

Basil served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Basil was inducted into the Army on August 10, 1943. On August 7, 1944 he landed in Omaha Beach and was attached to General Patton’s 3rd Army. Basil fought in 4 Campaigns, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Basil received 4 Bronze Stars for his service to his Country. Basil worked in the Trucking Industry for over 50 years. He retired in 1980 as Vice President of Subler Transfer in Versailles. Basil was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles and served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Basil served on the Versailles School and Library Boards for 8 years, served as former Commander of the Versailles V.F.W., Past Chairman of Versailles Poultry Days in 1969 and Charter member of the Versailles Eagles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 13, 2014 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles with Rev. Fr. James Simons celebrant. Neva I. Onkst (October 9, 2014)

Neva I. Onkst age 97, of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 10:45 A.M. on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Rest Haven Nursing home in Greenville. Neva was born December 30, 1916 in Darke County, Ohio to the late Carl B. & Nova G. (Lecklider) Wagner.

Neva is survived by her children, Beverly Lees of Greenville, Gerald & Patty Onkst of Greenville, Robert Onkst of Indianapolis, Indiana and Christopher & Linda Onkst of Greenville; grandchildren, Charnell Hough, James Brenner, James Onkst, Julie Deason, Johnny Onkst, Denise Saunders, Tammy Gantt, Rex Edward Onkst, Sandra Onkst Rehmert and Patrick Onkst; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Neva was also preceded in death by a son, James Onkst; daughters-in-law, Marjorie Onkst and Pat Onkst; and a stillborn granddaughter, Teresa Onkst.

Neva retired in 1983 from Wayne hospital in Greenville where she was a nurse’s aide for 25 years. Neva was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church in Greenville.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville with Rev. Elwood Stuart officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Cemetery. Sheryl “Sherry” Kay Pass-Gallagher (October 8, 2014)

Sheryl “Sherry” Kay Pass-Gallagher, age 64 of Bradford, Ohio passed away at 3:25 P.M. Wednesday October 8, 2014 at her residence in Bradford. She was born February 15, 1950 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and the daughter of Eileen R. (Jones) Altenberger of Greenville, Ohio and the late George E. Altenberger Sr.

Sherry was the owner and operator of her own quilting business, known as Garden Gate Cottage Quilting for 10 years, retiring in 2013. Prior to that she had been employed with several other businesses.

Sherry was a member of the Episcopal Church Women’s Group in Greenville, a former member of Rosalie Hoover’s Quilting Class and the Greenville Quilting Club.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her brother George E. Altenberger Jr.

Sherry’s survivors, in addition to her mother are her husband Michael Dennis Gallagher of Bradford. They were married November 20, 1993. Also children Tisha (Richard) Lalley of Cincinnati, Christian M. Pass of Arcanum, Maureen Suttman of Union and Sean (Diane) Gallagher of Vandalia; 5 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; brother Dana (Judy) Altenberger of Virginia; sister Anita (Tommy) Welch of Shattuck, Oklahoma; sister in law Jerri Altenberger of Greenville and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a Memorial Gathering on Monday October 13, 2014 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio.

Kenneth Jay “Kenny” Lane (October 6, 2014)

Kenneth Jay “Kenny” Lane, age 69, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 5:33 PM at his residence. He was born on September 17, 1945 in Union City, Indiana, to his late father Kenneth Oliver Lane and late mother and step father Pauline (Beam) & Orval Leaver.

He is survived by his wife, Carla (Phillips) Lane of Greenville; son and daughter in law, Cody & Brianna Lane of Greenville; daughters and sons in law, Kela & Eric Plamper of Medina, Ohio, and Vicki Lyn & Jamie Reed of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Josef, Natalie and Oliver Plamper and Olivia and Sophia Reed; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kenny was a member of the United States Army serving in the Vietnam War. He worked at Union City Body Company and Workhorse in Union City. He loved fishing, hunting and most of all being with his grandkids that referred to him as their Pappoo. He helped fix Fort Greenville and was a member of the Moose Lodge.

There will be a memorial gathering held on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 5-8 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. It is the wishes of the family that memorial contributions are given to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Paul N. Kaufman (October 5, 2014)

Paul N. Kaufman, 97, of Greenville and formerly Troy, passed away Early Sunday morning, October 5, 2014, at Reid Hospital in Richmond, IN.

He was born July 25, 1917, in Springfield, OH, son of the late Pearl and Ola Elsie (Norton) Kaufman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step mother, Louise Kaufman; his first wife, Janet (Westerling) Kaufman; his second wife of over 50 years, Mildred “Midge” (Hagaman) Kaufman; a brother, Ray Kaufman; and sisters, Martha Estey and Ruth May.

Paul was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII. He had worked most his life for Bridgestone (the former Dayton Tire and Rubber). He was a member of the New Hope Lutheran Church in Dayton. He was an avid golfer and bowler.

He is survived by his children, Ann Bailey and Tom Kaufman; 3 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 15 at the Riverside Cemetery Chapel in Troy with Pastor Eric Knight officiating.

There will be no public visitation. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to State of the Heart Hospice, 1350 N. Broadway, Greenville, OH 45331.

Barbara Colleen Brickler, age 80, of Gettysburg, Ohio, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 1:05 AM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. She was born on July 29, 1934 in Darke County, Ohio, to the late Ralph & Maude (McKinney) Hubler.

She is survived by her children, Roxanne B. & Larry Hill of Cordova, Tennessee, William R. & Velma Brickler Jr. of Gettysburg, Sherry L. & Donald Mong of East Greenwich, Rhode Island and Johnnie L. & Carrie Simons of Greenville; grandchildren, Erin N. Telford, Kye W. Lamn, Derrick J. Mong, Ryan T. Simons, Amber Seibel, Tasha Seibel and Ashley Seibel; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Jim Hubler of TN, Carol Brown of AR, Joan Parks of TX and Norma Gettinger of IN; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, William R. “Bill” Brickler Sr. and siblings, Murle Hubler, Frank Hubler, Bobby Hubler, Don Hubler, Evelyn Plank, Dorothy Ray and Evelyn Frey.

Barbara was retired from Corning after 30 years of service and then worked at Neff Lettering in Greenville. She loved bowling, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She was a member of the Moose Lodge and some Corning Retirement Groups.

There will be a service held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 2:30 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio, with Pastor Terry Haworth officiating. Burial will follow in the Stelvideo Cemetery, Stelvideo, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 12:30-2:30 PM at the funeral home.

Gloria was born October 30, 1946 in Greenville, Ohio and the daughter of Theresa V. (Powell) Hosbrook of Greenville and the late Basil R. Hosbrook.

Gloria loved to play bingo.

Harvey H. “Junior” Becraft, age 58, of North Star, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 8:04 PM at State of the Heart Hospice Care Center, Greenville, Ohio. He was born on August 3, 1956 in Springfield, Ohio, to the late Harve & Norma Jean (Cultice) Becraft.

Richard Emil Janson (October 1, 2014)

Richard Emil Janson, age 51 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 4:38 A.M. Wednesday October 1, 2014 at his residence in Greenville. Richard was born December 24, 1962 in Lodi, Ohio and the son of Janet (Krebs) Janson of Greenville and the late Robert E. Janson who passed away September 14, 1998.

Richard was a former member of the Radio Controlled Airplane Club and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, both of Greenville.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister Linda J. Janson in 1985 and an Uncle John Krebs.

Survivors, in addition to his mother are his son Ian Richard Janson of Osgood; brother David W. (Melinda) Janson of Piqua; sister Carol Ann Janson of Versailles; nephews Joseph Robert Janson and Dustin Robert Janson; niece Rachel Janson and special friend Deana Jett.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday October 8, 2014 in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church 233 West Third Street Greenville, Ohio with Rev. Father John R. White celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Church Cemetery.

Florence Marie Teegarden (September 30, 2014)

Florence Marie Teegarden, 95, of Greenville, Ohio died Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville, Ohio.

She was born August 14, 1919 in Darke County, Ohio, daughter of the late Benjamin H. and Edna (Study) Pickett. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Teegarden; brothers, Forrest, Harold A., and Paul E. Pickett.

Florence was a homemaker, a member of Bible Fellowship Church in Greenville, and past matron of The Order Eastern Star in Union City, Indiana.

She is survived by her step children, Betty Anna Ellis, Marvin Teegarden, Doris Jane Fike; sisters, Irene Greenstein. Olive Alspaugh, Mary Newnam; brothers, Robert Pickett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the Chapel of the Brethren Retirement Community with Chaplain Todd Reish officiating. Burial will follow in the Union City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. till the time of services Saturday at the Chapel of the Brethren Retirement Community. The family request in the lieu of flowers donations be given to Brethren Retirement Resident Aid Fund.

Billy Joe Skidmore III, age 22, of Gettysburg, Ohio, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 11:00 PM in Troy, Ohio. He was born on May 23, 1992 in Dayton, Ohio, to Julie Edsall of Gettysburg and Billy Joe Skidmore II of West Alexandria, Ohio.

In addition to his parents he is survived his girlfriend, Kelsey Lynch of Gettysburg; sons, Brycen Jene & Kacyn Lee Skidmore; grandmothers, Norma Arntz of Dayton and Mary Ellen Skidmore of West Alexandria; brother, Tyler Algeo of Maryland; sister Angelica Algeo of Maryland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Billy was a member of the Solid Rock Church.

She is survived by her children, John Grisez of Chicago, ILL, Michael Grisez of Greenville, Phyllis (Leroy Sr.) Ahrns of Sidney, OH, Robert Francis (Tracy) Grisez of Magnolia, KY, Francis Grisez Jr. of New Madison, OH, Nick Grisez of Gettysburg, and Susan Mary (Doyle) Derr of Gettysburg, OH; 19 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; daughter in law, Martha Grisez of Gettysburg; siblings, Leo L. Barga of Arkansas and Ruby Cool of Greenville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Francis Grisez Sr.; sons, David & Thomas Grisez, siblings, Velma Thibeu, Eileen Christian, June Barga, Dale Barga, George Barga, Eldon Barga, Lowell Barga and Wayne Barga.

Barbara was a homemaker. She loved reading, gardening, pets, bingo and going to the Darke County Fair and was a member of TOPS.

There will be a service held on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. Burial will follow in the St. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Newport, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 from 5-7 PM at the funeral home.
