Peter E. Mangen (January 21, 2015)

Peter E. Mangen age 96, of Versailles, Ohio passed away at 10:41 P.M. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at his residence. Peter was born January 1, 1919 in Darke County, Ohio to the late John F. & Ida F. (Subler) Mangen.

Peter is survived by his wife of 74 years, Dorothy E. (McEldowney) Mangen whom he married September 7, 1940; children, Mary E. Knight of Beavercreek, Ohio, Edward F. & Sandra Mangen of Beavercreek, Ohio, William L. & Anne Mangen of Celina, Ohio, Robert J. & Janice Mangen of Huber Heights, Ohio, Vickie A. & Ted Hollinger of Morrow, Ohio, Jeffrey T. “Smoke” Mangen of Versailles, Ohio and Janice M. & John Kaeck of Piqua, Ohio; grandchildren, Jay Knight, Eric Knight, John Mangen, Greg & Jennifer Mangen, Melissa & Brian Gerlach, Rachel & Shad Toney; Teresa & Ken Robinson, Kim Davidson, Erin & Michael Jordan, Brian & Amy Shappie, Jenna Hollinger, Ben & Kara Shappie and Alex Shappie; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Treon of Versailles; sister-in-law, Marcella Schafer of Beavercreek, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Peter was also preceded in death by his sons-in-laws, Jerry Knight and Scott Shappie; brothers, Paul J. Mangen and Francis P. Mangen; and sisters, Mary C. Schulze and Josephine Rarick.

Peter served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He retired from GM in Dayton where he worked for 42 years. Peter was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles. He was a life member of the Versailles V.F.W. and American Legion. Peter was a Golden Eagle member of the Versailles Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2347.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles with Rev. Fr. James Simons celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Valbert Cemetery in Versailles with Military Honors conducted by the Versailles Veteran’s Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. and Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles.
