Richard E. Dill, Sr. (January 29, 2010)

Richard E. Dill, Sr. age 89 of Arcanum, Ohio, passed away at 12:15 A.M. on Friday, January 29, 2010 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. Richard was born December 28, 1920 in Bradford, Ohio, to the late Elmer Dill & Euturpy (Bailey) Thomas.
Richard retired from Delco Moraine in Dayton as a tool & die maker. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Greenville and the Greenville V.F.W.

In addition to his parents, Richard is also preceded in death by his step father, Chester C. Thomas; wife, Joyce S. (Shields) Dill, whom he married July 18, 1946; a grandchild; and ½ brothers, Harold Dill and Bill Thomas.

Richard is survived by a daughter, Brenda J. Dill of Arcanum, whom he resided with for the last 16 years; sons & daughters-in-law, Richard E. “Rick” & Sally Dill, II of Centerville and John F. & Shirley Dill of Staunton, Virginia; 2 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren; ½ brothers, Wayne Dill of Athens, Georgia and Dewight Thomas of Columbia, South Carolina; and ½ sisters, Betty McKibben of Fayetteville Georgia, Carol Slyder of Greenville and Betty Grubb of Rossburg.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 1, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville, with Pastor Samuel Hoeflich officiating. Burial will be in the Greenville Cemetery (New Section) at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends on Monday from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home, all friends are welcome. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Greenville Veteran’s Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mary H. Coppess (January 28, 2010)

Mrs. Mary Helen Coppess, age 92 of Greenville, Ohio and formerly of Ansonia went home to be with her Lord and Savior at 9:57 P.M. Thursday January 28, 2010 at the Alterra Sterling House of Greenville. She was born January 27, 1918 in Ansonia, Ohio and the daughter of the late Francis William & Nettie Edna (Miller) Sholley.

She was a homemaker and with her late husband owned and operated the former Coppess Supermarket of Ansonia.

Mary was a 1937 graduate of Ansonia High School, a member of the Ansonia Garden Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ansonia American Legion. She was also a member of the Ansonia Christian Church and the Women’s Christian Fellowship of the church. She with her late husband Dub had been actively involved with the Darke County Jeepsters.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lowell “Dub” Coppess December 26, 2003. They were married June 18, 1938. Also sisters Alice Shaw, Clara Marie Sholley and Marie Derr and brother John Sholley.

She is survived by sons and daughters in law Larry & Judy Coppess of Minister and John & Loretta Coppess of Mason, Ohio. Daughters and sons in law Linda & Albert Gasper of Ansonia and Jeanne and Dr. James Appleman of Greenville. Also 16 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Brother William J. Sholley of Greenville as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday February 1, 2010 at the Ansonia Christian Church 123 West Weller St., Ansonia, Ohio with Pastor Randy Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Ansonia Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 10 A.M. until time of services in the church.

Sherry L. Curless-Hood (January 27, 2010)

Sherry Lynn (Ralston) Curless-Hood, 48, of Union City, Ohio passed away at her residence on Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Sherry was born in Union City, Indiana on March 6, 1961, daughter of the late Wilbur and Margaret (Himes) Ralston.

Sherry was a graduate of Mississiniwa Valley High School and Ball State University. She was a Probation Officer for Delaware County. Sherry enjoyed gardening, listening to music and being around dogs. She also loved helping people and talking with people, and because of this she had many friends.

Sherry is survived by her husband, Jeremiah Hood; two sons, Zachary Curless and Matthew Curless; two brothers, Daniel Ralston and Delmar Hall; three sisters, Lisa Ralston and special companion, Steve Davis, Nora Riley and Nancy Hunt.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by her oldest son, Jason Ralston in 1985.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at Storch Braund Funeral Home, New Madison, Ohio with a service immediately following at 12:00 PM with the Rev. John Nunnelly being asked to officiate. Burial will follow in the Union City Cemetery, Union City, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to Storch Braund Funeral Home to assist with funeral costs.

Helen I. Trump (January 29, 2010)

Helen I. Trump, 90, of Ft. Wayne, formerly of the New Madison area, died January 29, 2010 at the Golden Living Center, Richmond, Indiana. Mrs. Trump was born in Preble County on January 26, 1920, the daughter of the late Wilbur and Treva (Schellenbarger) Banta. Helen was a retired Sales Person for the former Quality Farm and Fleet, Greenville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick L. Trump, who died September 21, 2008 and a brother George Banta. She is survived by Daughter Diana Ruble of Ft. Wayne; Son Frederick Lloyd Trump II of New Madison; 3 Grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren; sisters Elsie Wise of New Paris and Alice Sandlin of Englewood. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the Kreitzer Funeral Home, Arcanum with Rev Doug Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Castine Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.

John S. Fourman (January 25, 2010)

John S. Fourman passed away on Jan. 25, 2010, at his residence at the Brethren Retirement Community.

He was born on May 29, 1919, in Arcanum, Ohio, to Phares and Fannie (Christian) Fourman.

He married Mary L. Lawrence on Nov. 7, 1941; and is survived by Mary, a resident of the Brethren Retirement Community; sons, Dr. Michael Fourman of Greenville, Kenton Fourman of Brentwood, Tenn., and Jeffrey Fourman of Oak Park, Ill.; grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Fourman, David Fourman, Aaron Fourman, Christopher Fourman, Eric Fourman, Mark Fourman, Grace Fourman, Marie Fourman and Sam Fourman; and great-grandchildren, Hallie Fourman, Kate Fourman, Maddie Fourman and Ella Fourman.

A memorial celebration of John’s life will be held at the Greenville Church of the Brethren on Central Avenue on Saturday.

Family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 2:30 p.m. John gifted his body to the Wright State University School of Medicine. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Resident Aid Fund at the Brethren Retirement Community.

Donna J. Wright (January 26, 2010)

Mrs. Donna J. Wright, age 89 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 2:05 P.M. Tuesday January 26, 2010 at the Brethren Retirement Community Greenville, Ohio. Donna was born October 12, 1920 in Darke County Ohio near Coletown. She was the daughter of the late Finley “Ruby” & Ruby Viola (Overholser) Cole.

Donna was a homemaker, a 1938 graduate of Greenville High School, a member of the First Congregational Christian Church of Greenville, the Criterian Literary Club, Ft. Black Order of the Eastern Star and a former member of the Beta Chapter of the Alpha Delta Omega sorority.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jay A. Wright—September 21, 2008. They were married December 19, 1941. Also her grandson—Jonathan T. Wright in 2007, sister—Norma Alice Cole and brother-- Ronald Cole.

Donna is survived by her sons and daughters in law—Richard A. & Charlotte Wright of Greenville and J. Frederick & Shirley Wright of Piqua. Grandchildren—Carrie & John Poores of Clayton, Richard A. & Sue Wright II of Hobbs, New Mexico, Jeremy & Kristin Wright of Lubbock, Texas. Great Grandchildren—Jesse Poores of Dayton and Corey Poores stationed with the U.S. Marine Corp., and Torie Murdock of Texas Tech University. Sister—Mary Lou Sparklin of Greenville, brother and sister in law—Robert & Phyllis Cole of Greenville and sister in law—Mrs. Juel Wright Aue of Cincinnati. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday January 30, 2010 at the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with the Rev. Doug Krauss officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery. The family will received friends on Friday from 5 till 8 P.M. in the funeral home.

Opal G. Behrens (January 25, 2010)

Mrs. Opal Grace Behrens, age 95 of Greenville, Ohio has gone home to be with her Lord at 12:15 P.M. Monday January 25, 2010 at the Rest Haven Nursing Home of Greenville. Opal was born October 9, 1914 in New Weston, Ohio and the daughter of the late Samuel & Louisa Alvessa (Alter) Hendrickson.

She was an antique dealer and a 1933 graduate of the Greenville High School. Opal was a member of the St. Paul Episcopal Church of Greenville and served as a Lay Reader of the Church. She was also well known for wearing hats for all occasions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands—George J. Menger, Pat Ireland and Art Behrens. Also by her son Keith Menger, grandson Jeff Menger and brother Harold Alter Hendrickson.

Opal is survived by a son and daughters in law—Kenneth G. & Sylvia Menger of Tennessee and Joyce Menger of Greenville. Also grandchildren—Tim Menger, Jamie Menger, Mindy (Mike) Basford, Jon G. (Svetlana) Menger and Tod C. (Tania) Menger. Great grandchildren—Jessica Menger and Christopher Menger. Nieces—Patty (John) Watts of California and Mary Louise (Dr. C. William) Johnston of Greenville, as well as other Great Nephews and Nieces, particularly Dr. Kristene (Scott) Clark of Gettysburg, Ohio

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday January 28, 2010 at the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with the Rev. Lowell Miller officiating. Maxine D. Paulus (January 25, 2010)

Maxine D. Paulus age 88, formerly of Bradford, Ohio, passed away at 1:05 A.M. on Monday, January 25, 2010 at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville. Maxine was born April 22, 1921 in Arcanum, Ohio, to the late David & Daisy (Harrison) Johnson.

Maxine retired from Keller Grain & Feed Inc. in Horatio, where she was a bookkeeper. She was a member of Webster United Methodist Church; Wayne Grange in Webster; and was an avid bowler and card player.

In addition to her parents, Maxine is also preceded in death by her husband, Ezra L. Paulus on June 24, 2001, whom she married June 7, 1941; a great granddaughter; brothers, Ivan & Robert Johnson; and sisters, Margaret Cothran, Dorothy Hole, Mildred Flaler and an infant sister, Frieda Johnson.

Maxine is survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Kay & Don Swabb of Greenville, Bernice Pleiman of Versailles, Kathy Seiler & Terry Eley of Greenville and Sharon & Keith Fourman of Arcanum; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at Webster United Methodist Church 8849 Seibt Rd. Bradford (Webster), Ohio, with Pastor Linda Dulin officiating. Burial will follow in Miami Memorial Park in Covington. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles. William C. Shiverdecker (January 25, 2010)

Mr. William C. Shiverdecker, age 58 of Greenville, Ohio and formerly of Rossburg, Ohio passed away peacefully at home on Monday January 25, 2010 at 1:00 AM. He was born February 24, 1951 in Greenville, Ohio the son of the late William C. & Betty Ann (Burrow) Shiverdecker.

He worked at Corning Glass for 28 years and served in the United States Marine Corp. in Vietnam where he received 2 Purple Hearts with Cluster and A Bronze Star. He was a member of the V.F.W. of Greenville and American Legion Post # 140.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and Nephew: Shane Smith.

He is survived by his Wife: Marlene (Wisecup) Shiverdecker of Greenville; Brother & Sister in law: David & Cheryl Shiverdecker of Greenville; Sisters & brothers in law: Susan & Terry Wolfe of Greenville, Jean & Brad Jones of Laura, & Janet Webb of Greenville; Aunt & uncle: Joe & Peggy Vannoy of Liberty, Indiana; numerous nieces, nephews, & cousins; & a good friend: Bob Cook of Ansonia.

Ruth Rhoades (January 24, 2010)

Mrs. Ruth Rhoades, age 103, of Columbus, Ohio and formerly of Greenville, as well as the Franklin Township area, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 12:45 AM at the Forum of Knightsbridge in Columbus, Ohio. Born at home on February 4, 1906 in Adams Township, (Darke County, Ohio), the daughter of the late Henry and Emaline (Earnest) Applegate.

Ruth graduated from Franklin Township High School in 1923. Attended the Miami Jacobs Business College in Dayton (one subject she remembers taking was Penmanship then worked in a Bank in Greenville as a record keeper). She met Sylvin Rhoades through one of Sylvin’s sisters, Catherine Rhoades and was married on February 18, 1928. To this union was born one son, Max Eugene Rhoades of whom they were very proud. She was married 69 years until Sylvin’s passing on June 28, 1997. Ruth was a farmer’s wife and homemaker most of her life in the Franklin Township area. She was a member of the Painter Creek Church of the Brethren for over 50 years and a lifetime member of the Darke County Farm Bureau.

Proceeded in death by parents, 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Survived by son and daughter in law, Max Eugene and Jane Elizabeth Rhoades of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Stephanie Marie Rhoades of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Cynthia Renee Rhoades of London, England, and Kelly Ann (Murphy) Potter and husband Timothy Potter of Columbus, Ohio; great grandchildren, Emma Elizabeth Faye Potter, Evelyn Ruth Potter, Sarah Grace Potter and Cary Isaac Davidson, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a dear friend, Margaret Hocker of Greenville.

There will be a service held on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville with Pastor David Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in the Gettysburg Cemetery, Gettysburg, Ohio. Family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 on Friday at the funeral home.

Diana Jane Hawkey (January 23, 2010)

Diana Jane Hawkey, 60, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 7:54 AM at the Versailles Health Care Center, Versailles, Ohio. She was born on February 5, 1949 in Darke County, Ohio, to the late Basil & Faye (Owens) Hawkey.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Susan Lawrence.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Bruce & Kristina Hawkey of Greenville, Ohio; grandchildren, Blaine & Emma Hawkey; brothers and sisters in law, David & Pat Hawkey of Union City, Ohio and Bill & Jenny Hawkey of New Madison, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Shelia Hoole, Darren Hawkey, Christina Locke, Laura Hall, Erin Crowe, Stacy Lawrence, Scott Lawrence and Nathan Lawrence.

Ryan James Luthman (January 20, 2010)

Ryan James Luthman, Stillborn, of Versailles, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy, Ohio. He is the son of Randall & Danielle (Dunlap) Luthman of Versailles, Ohio.

In addition to Ryan’s parents he is survived by his twin brother and sister, Caitlyn and Cole Luthman, brother, Josh Luthman and sister, Jayna Luthman all live at home, paternal grandparents, Wilbert & Joyce Luthman of Russia, Ohio and maternal grandmother, Theresa Lyle and friend Dan Monnin of Versailles, Ohio.

There will be a private graveside service held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, Ohio.

Dolores Baltes (January 18, 2010)

Dolores C. “Dorie” Baltes age 79 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 4:21 P.M. on Monday, January 18, 2010 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Dorie was born May 15, 1930 in Wendelin, Ohio; to the late Jacob & Loretta (Wuebker) Siefring.

Dorie, along with her husband, was former owners of Baltes Restaurant in Frenchtown for 37 years. Dorie was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles and St. Ann’s Sodality of Holy Family Catholic Church in Frenchtown.

In addition to her parents, Dorie is also preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Hemmelgarn; and brothers, Ralph and Victor Siefring.

Dorie is survived by her husband, James “Jimmy” Baltes, whom she married June 12, 1951. She is also survived by her daughters & sons-in-law, Jayne Baltes of Greenville, Holly & Nick Keiser of Versailles, and Dennis Hemmelgarn of Burkettsville; grandchildren, Michael & Lisha Hemmelgarn, Bryan & Nikki Hemmelgarn, Odessa & Keith Boeckman, Megan, Madison, Mallory & Alex Keiser; great grandchildren, Allyson Hemmelgarn, Ben & Kate Hemmelgarn, Ava, Samuel & Michael Boeckman; brothers & sister-in-law, Leroy & MaryJane Siefring of St. Henry and Urban Siefring of Ft. Recovery; sisters & brothers-in-law, Irene & Dick Schilling of Coldwater, Evelyn Siefring of Coldwater and Jenny & Jim Condon of Versailles; sister-in-law, Flo (Siefring) McCalla of Minster; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 22, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles, with Rev. Fr. David Vincent celebrant. Frances L. Hoffman (January 17, 2010)

Frances Lucille Hoffman age 83 of Union City, Indiana, passed away at 9:25 A.M. on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at her residence. Lucille was born August 29, 1926 in Union City, Ohio; to the late Perry & Mary (Russell) Russell.

Lucille formerly owned Lucille’s Restaurant in Union City, Ohio, Ansonia Dairy Twin, and Annie Oakley Truck Stop on 127 North. She was a member of the Union City Eagles Ladies Auxiliary #2790 and the Field Trial Association.

In addition to her parents, Lucille is also preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Hoffman and sister, Evelyn Waneta Sheppard.

Lucille is survived by a daughter, Vanessa Jean Bickel Paris of Ansonia; sons & daughters-in-law, David Bruce Bickel Miller of Warsaw, Indiana, Terry Eugene & Lynn Bickel Miller of Warsaw, Indiana, Gayle Keith & Linda Bickel Grover of Richmond, Indiana, Steven Duane “Jon” Bickel Cloud of Cape Coral, Florida and Wesley Andrew “Mark” Bickel Grover of Richmond, Indiana; 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; brother & sister-in-law, Dale Edward & Donna Russell of Louisville, Kentucky; sisters & brother-in-law, Ruth Lillian & Roy Wilson of Greensboro, Indiana, Bettie Lou Jordan of Anderson, Indiana, Anna Marie Adkins on Union City, Indiana, Barbara Lee Young of Union City, Ohio and Catherine Mae Gaylor of Anderson, Indiana; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Gale C. Dubbs (January 17, 2010)

Mr. Gale C. Dubbs, age 68 of New Madison died as a result of a tragic automobile accident on the early morning of Sunday January 17, 2010.

Gale is survived by his wife Janice (Grilliot) daughter and son in law Teresa and Caton McLear and was the loving grandfather to his pride and joy Wesley Gale McLear. He is also survived by his brothers, sisters and their spouses—Philip and Shirley Dubbs of New Madison, Kathy (Dean) Dubbs of Mason, Ohio, Marcia (Dubbs) and Bob McCue of California, and Craig and LuAnn Dubbs of Chicago, Ill. Gale’s father in law—Robert L. Grilliot of Versailles. Also sisters in law and brothers in law—Marge (Grilliot) and Tom Jones of Avon, Ohio, Jim Grilliot of Bowling Green, Ohio and Jeff and Kim Grilliot of Bowling Green, Ohio. Also many nieces and nephews and along with many friends.

Gale was preceded in death by his parents Phyllis (Cole) and Wilson, his brother Dean and his mother in law Helen Grilliot.

Gale owned, raised, trained and drove Standard Bred horses for 40 years. He was a General Motors retiree and was currently employed by the Greenville City School System. Gale was also a veteran serving in the U.S. Army.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday January 22, 2010 in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with the Rev. Greg A. Hyre officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenmound Cemetery New Madison, Ohio. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 till 8 P.M. in the funeral home.

Edith A. Bowers (January 18, 2010)

Edith A. Bowers, 95, of Greenville, passed away Monday, January 18, 2010 at Rest Haven. Edith was born in Preble County on May 3, 1914, daughter of the late Lawrence and Teressa (Lyons) Bowers.

Edith graduated from New Madison High School in 1933. She worked for General Motors for 38 years. After retiring, Edith did some traveling with her family and enjoyed every minute of it. She loved flowers, gardening and bird watching, shopping at Elder Beerman and trips to Dayton. Edith enjoyed cooking and family dinners, spending time with children and getting together at Christmastime.

In addition to her parents and stepmother, Lissie Bowers, Edith is preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Robert and Harold Bowers and two sisters, Judy Klopfer and Carol Sue Bowers.

She is survived by three brothers, Marvin (Doris) Bowers, Joe Bowers, and Donald (Mary) Bowers; and three sisters, Doris Longenecker, Jean (Gene) Knox, and Ruth (Von) Spitzer.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 from 4 - 6 PM at Storch Braund Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 10:30 AM also at the funeral home with Rev. Raymond Longenecker and Rev. Rick Gutheil being asked to officiate. Jerome W. Passon (January 14, 2010)

Mr. Jerome W. “Jerry” Passon, age 76 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Thursday January 14, 2010 at 8:25 PM at his residence. He was born August 17, 1933 in Greenville, Ohio the son of the late Robert E. & Doris V. (Stickel) Passon.

He was employed at Northmont Schools retiring on December 31, 2009; he also had worked at Dayton Press for several years and was a milkman for Dairy Maid. He served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War.

He worked for the Greenville Athletic department as a scorekeeper and timekeeper for athletic events, he was a very avid sports supporter and he loved the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a member of the Greenville Athletic Hall of Fame.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his daughters: Karyl Kindell of West Chester, Ohio, Kim Clark of Greenville; Grandchildren: Kyle & spouse Jaime Kindell, Kaleb & Kia Kindell, Ethan & Zane Clark; Great Granddaughters: Emma & Maya Kindell; Brothers & Sisters & spouses: Donna & Robert Kuenzler of Seminole, Florida, Jim & Mae Passon of Huber Heights, Ohio, Dan & Sue Passon of Madison, Alabama, Mary Jo Willis of Colorado Springs, Colorado; & numerous nieces & nephews & great nieces & nephews.

Mary E. Trent, 99, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 12:54 AM in Bowling Green, Ohio. She was born on February 14, 1910 in Darke County, Ohio, to the late William G. & Martha Ann (Woodman) Iddings.


Mary was a housewife and a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Trent, son, Jerry Trent, granddaughter, Lori Horner, brothers; Charles Jack Iddings, William A. Iddings, John Iddings and Howard “Spike” Iddings, sisters; Bertha Dispennette, Edna Wion, Bessie Trent, and Justina Devor.

She is survived by her daughters and son in law; Phyllis & Ken Horner of Greenville, Ohio, Debbie Deitz of Indianapolis, Indiana and Karen Trent of Bowling Green, Ohio, son, Larry Trent of Greenville, Ohio, daughter in law, Norma Trent of Greenville, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, sister, Floreita Tegtmeyer of Greenville, Ohio as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a service held on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Rev. John Seeley officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens, Greenville, Ohio. There will be no public visitation.

Phillip B. McClain (January 11, 2010)

Mr. Phillip B. McClain, 79 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 3:10 AM at his residence. He was born on July 22, 1930 in Bellefontaine, Ohio to the late Herbert & Zellah (Bailey) McClain.


Phillip was the owner and operator of the Ice Cream Kitchen in Greenville until 1971 and was also a Tool and Die Designer working for Ex-cell-o Corp in Greenville and Kindell Tool and Die Inc in Laura, Ohio. He was a member of the United States Navy serving in the Korean War.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his son in law, Donald Hall, brothers; Herbert Don McClain, John A. McClain and James R. McClain as well as a sister, Joan Williams.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Thompson) McClain of Greenville, Ohio whom he married on August 13, 1953 in San Diego, California, daughters and son in law; Deborah Hall of Lima, Ohio and Nora & Lanny Greear of Temperance, Michigan, son and daughter in law; Barney & Margee McClain of Lewisburg, Ohio, granddaughters; Kari & Lisa Greear and Megan McClain, grandson, Timmy McClain, step granddaughters; Kathryn Graf and Monica Shoupe, step grandson, Charlie Graf, step great grandson, Ethan, brother, Charles McClain of West Liberty, Ohio, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service held on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 2:30 PM at the Greenville Cemetery, New Section, Greenville, Ohio, with Pastor Samuel Hoeflich officiating. Family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:30 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. The Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be conducting a Military Graveside Service.

Derrick A. Mowery (January 8, 2010)

Derrick A. Mowery, 42, of Richmond, IN and formerly of Greenville, OH, passed away Friday morning, January 8, 2010 at the emergency room of Reid Hospital in Richmond.

Derrick was born in Greenville, OH, son of Thomas L. and Shirley A. (Niswonger) Mowery of Greenville.

He was employed at Romark Industries in Richmond and was a co-partner of Jones Auto Sales in Centerville, IN.

In addition to his parents he is survived by a son, Lane Michael Mowery of Richmond; maternal grandparents, George and Helen Niswonger of Greenville; a sister, Tonia (and friend, Brian Meade) Mowery of Greenville; a nephew, Eli Hathaway of Greenville; a very special friend and mother of his son, Heather Jones of Richmond; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be held Wednesday, January 13 at 7 p.m. at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home, 1000 N. Broadway, Greenville, with the Rev. Jim Morehouse officiating.

Richard Dean “Dick” Arnold, age 80 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday January 5, 2010 at 9:00 AM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. He was born September 7, 1929 in Darke County, Ohio the son of the late A.W. & Mary (Byram) Arnold.

He worked for General Motors retiring in 1986. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of Woodington Congregational Christian Church and he attended Trinity Wesleyan Church. He loved doing lawn work.

Gladys E. Francis, age 97 of Russia, Ohio passed away on Saturday January 2, 2010 at 7:03 PM at Heritage Manor in Minster, Ohio. She was born January 12, 1912 in Russia, Ohio in the same house she lived in her whole life, she is the daughter of the late: Joseph & Mary (Magoto) Monnier. She was a homemaker.

She is a member of St. Remy Catholic Church, Russia, Ohio; she was formerly active with St. Ann’s Sodality of the church, she was president of the Russia Senior Citizens a position she held for a number of years. She was an avid card player and loved working in her yard.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Ohmer Francis on January 9, 1977 whom she married July 31, 1937; Brothers: Leo, Noah, Leonard, & Arthur Monnier; Sisters: Rosie Paulus, Opal Simon, Viola Dillon, and Leora Guillozet.

She is survived by her Niece/Foster daughter and spouse: Mary & Alvin Prenger of Minster, Ohio; Special Grandchildren & spouses: Teresa & Alan Clune, Dennis & Christa Prenger, David & Laura Prenger; Special Great Grandchildren: Alex & Tara Clune, Kyle & Courtney Prenger, Bradly, Nicolas, & Colin Prenger; & numerous nieces & nephews.

Paul L. Bortner (January 4, 2010)

Paul L. Bortner, 93, of Greenville, passed away on January 4, 2010 at the Brethren Retirement Community. Paul was born on January 12, 1916 in Lynn, Indiana, son of the late Elza and Anna (Moore) Bortner.

Paul graduated from high school in Fountain City, Indiana and was a wood pattern maker for NATCO (National Automatic Tool Company) in Richmond, Indiana for most of his life. Paul enjoyed camping and was a member of the Slo-Downers retiree camping club. He also enjoyed gardening, making clocks and helping people. Paul had been member of Prices Creek Church of the Brethren since 1955. Paul was a veteran and served honorably in United States Army.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, A. Irene Bortner, whom he married on December 22, 1941; a son, Jerry and Margaret Bortner of Greenville; a daughter, Lois and Paul Moore of Southbend, Indiana; four grandchildren, Eric (Alicia) Bortner of Moline, Illinois, Mike (Elizabeth) Bortner of Tucson, Arizona, Jarrod Scott of Dallas, Texas, Katurah (Joe) Mindock of Chicago, Illinois and Paula (Mike) Greenwell of Redmond, Oregon; two great-granchildren, Lacey Mindock and Alan Mindock; and a brother, Francis (Margaret) Bortner of Redmond, Oregon.

Paul is preceded in death by four brothers, Ernest, Kenneth, Donald and Gerald Bortner and a sister, Helen Bortner.

A visitation is planned for guests on Thursday, January 7, 2010 from 4 – 7 PM at Storch Braund Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 8, 2010 also at the funeral home with the Darke County Honor Guard presentation beginning the service. A graveside service will follow at the Willow Grove Cemetery in Fountain City with the Rev. Don King and Rev. Todd Riesh being asked to officiate. She was born on March 8, 1935 in Union City, Indiana the daughter of the late Virgil & Ruby (Dotson) Runkle. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ft. Black Order of the Eastern Star.

Valerie S. (Locke) Waldon, 45, of Greenville, passed away Monday morning, December 28, 2009 at Heartland of Greenville.

She was born in Greenville, the daughter of Ralph E. and Velma L. (Baxter) Locke of Greenville.

Charles A. Rausher (December 27, 2009)

Charles A. Rauscher, 82, of Gordon, died Sunday evening, December 27, 2009 at Heartland of Greenville. Mr. Rauscher was born in Verona, on January 16, 1927, the son of the late John W. and Stella (Studebaker) Rauscher. He was a member of Gordon United Methodist Church. Charles was employed locally as a carpenter. Mr. Rauscher served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a member of the Arcanum Community Rescue Squad and a Grange member. Charles was the former Mayor and a Council member of Gordon. He is survived by his wife Betty (Fourman) Rauscher whom he married June 26, 1954; Daughters Sheila Rauscher of Arcanum and Melissa Dersham and husband Tom of Vandalia; Son Doug Rauscher and wife Jill of Arcanum; Grandchildren Emily and Jessica Rauscher, Ella Grace Dersham and Baby Girl Dersham expected April 2010. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at the Gordon United Methodist Church with Pastor John Gilmore officiating. Burial will follow in Arlington Cemetery.
