Vereena M. Deal (March 30, 2010)

Vereena M. Deal age 68, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 6:55 A.M. on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at her residence. Vereena was born February 26, 1942 in Horatio, Ohio, daughter of the late Robert and Mary Alice (Brewer) Flory.

Vereena retired from Greenville City Schools after 30 years of service as a 3rd Grade Teacher at East School.

Vereena is survived by her husband, Douglas Deal, whom she married October 16, 1965. She is also survived by a daughter, Theresa “Terri” Deal of Greenville; brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Lynn Flory of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Brenda Deal of Las Vegas, Nevada and Jacqueline Nichols of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews who loved her very much.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville. Entombment will follow in Greenville Township Memorial Gardens in Greenville.

Robert R. Vance (March 30, 2010)

Mr. Robert R. Vance, age 87 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 5:15 A.M. Tuesday March 30, 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital Dayton, Ohio. Robert was born July 20, 1922 in Ansonia, Ohio and the son of the late Major and Opal (Jones) Vance.

He retired in 1989 from the Frame Gallery of Arcanum and was a Veteran of W.W. II serving in the U.S. Army as a Machinist in the Engineer’s Maintenance Company. He was also a member of the Evangelical United Methodist church of Greenville.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife—Joan M. (Thomas) Vance October 21, 2003. They were married January 19, 1947. Also by his brothers—Joe Lloyd and William E. Vance.

He is survived by sons and daughters in law—Thomas Robert and Sherri Vance of Greenville and Todd Allen Vance and Kathy Riesen-Vance of Geneva, Indiana, daughter and son in law—Susan Jayne and Paul Whittington of Lima, Ohio. Grandchildren Jason Vance and Cynthia Achterberg, Matthew and Debbie Vance, Adam and Sarah Vance, Elizabeth Whittington and David Branco. Great grandchildren—Morgan Vance, Zachary Vance, Nathan Vance and Mackenzie Vance, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday April 2, 2010 in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with Full Military Services being conducted by the Greenville Veteran’s Honor Guard as well. Burial will follow in the Abbottsville Cemetery. The Family will receive friends on Friday from 1 to 2 P.M. in the funeral home.

Frances E. Holzapfel (March 28, 2010)

Mrs. Frances E. Holzapfel, age 92 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 1:35 P.M. Sunday March 28, 2010 at Brookhaven Assisted Living Brookville, Ohio. Frances was born December 26, 1917 in Darke County and the daughter of the late Don A. & Mabel F. (Stapleton) Reck.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church of Greenville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband—Dorin F. Holzapfel June 1, 2005. They were married August 31, 1940. Also by a son—Dorin Holzapfel Jr. in 1976, daughter—Janis Moster in 1975, sisters—Maxine Beane and Geraldine Ivy and brother—Ronald Reck.

Frances is survived by daughter and son in law—Susan & Robert Best of Englewood, son and daughter in law—David and Karon Holzapfel of Clayton, daughter in law and spouse—Carol and Ralph Feola of Rome, N.Y. Also grandchildren and spouses—Janis and Dave Auster, David Feola, Andrew Feola, Zachary Holzapfel, Nicholas Holzapfel, Jennifer and Justin Keaton, Dorin Best, Brian Best and Tyler Best. Great granddaughter—Emelia Auster as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 12:30 P.M. Thursday April 1, 2010 in the Palestine Cemetery with Rev. John McRoberts officiating. There will be no visitation.

Jan P. Brown (March 31, 2010)

Jan P. Brown, 77, of Greenville, passed away Wednesday morning, March 31, 2010 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville.

She was born in Yuma, Arizona, daughter of the late George and Naomi (Jones) Hedger.

Jan is survived by her children, Hallie (Jack) Martin of Greenville and Douglas (Debbie) Claus of Naubinway, MI; a granddaughter, Heidi Hoort; great grandchildren, Kyle Hoort, Emily Hoort, and Morgan Hoort

Private services will be held at a later date with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, OH.

There will be no public visitation.

Arrangements have been entrusted with the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville.

Marvin E. Ray (March 27, 2010)

Marvin Eugene Ray, 85, previously of Rismiller Road near North Star, passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 5:22 AM at the Briarwood Village in Coldwater, Ohio. He had resided in recent years at the Versailles Health Care Center and Briarwood Village in Coldwater due to declining health.

Marvin was born on April 28, 1924, in Dayton, Ohio. He was one of five children, the third son of Grover Thurman Ray and Melvina Mariah Dulaney Ray. Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta; his parents and two brothers, infant Thurman Leslie Ray and Earl Arthur Ray. Siblings that survive include one brother, Garvin Duane Ray of Spokane Valley, Washington and one sister, Bonnie Marie Ray of Belleview, Florida.

During his early teen years, the family moved from Dayton to a farm near Hollansburg, Ohio. Marvin helped his family on their farm near Hollansburg and graduated with the Class of 1942 from Hollansburg-Westmont High School. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the army-air force to serve his country, studying as an aviation student from 1944-1945. While an aviation student at the Pampa, Texas air base, he began corresponding with a young woman from North Star. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, he married Loretta Grewe of North Star on June 12, 1946 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The young couple took up residence on the farm on Rismiller Road in Wabash Township, reared four children, all of whom survive.

During his adult life, Marvin worked the farm, in addition to other full-time jobs and community activities. He retired from active farming in 1976, but continued to live on the farm where he and Loretta made their home. Marvin retired in 1986 from Fram Corp in Greenville after 20 years of service. During his more active retirement years he enjoyed tending his yard, fruit trees and small garden; restoring classic cars; and traveling with Loretta to visit family and friends. For more than 18 years during his retirement, he and Loretta enjoyed numerous trips to Pampa, Texas to work towards the establishment of the Freedom Museum USA and to participate in the annual gathering of the Pampa Army-Air Field Reunion Association.

Marvin was a baptized member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, North Star; a member of the American Legion Buckeye Post 174, North Star; and a member of the Pampa Army-Air Field Reunion Association.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Mahlon and Monica Ray of Columbus, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law Maretta and Michael Kalinich of Corning, NY; daughter Rachael Henderson of Celina, Ohio and daughter and son-in-law Jana and Doug Reed of Jackson, Ohio. His legacy includes fourteen grandchildren, ranging in age from 11 years to 39 years, four great grandchildren, sister in law, Phyllis Grewe of Versailles, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a service held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St Paul Lutheran Church, 13495 Greenville-St. Mary’s Road, Versailles, Ohio with Pastor Laura Shreffler officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Paul’s Cemetery, Versailles, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from 6-8 PM at the Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, Ohio. There will be a Graveside Military service conducted by the North Star Honor Guard.

Catherine L. Schmidt (March 26, 2010)

Mrs. Catherine L. Schmidt, age 83 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 8:50 A.M. Friday March 26, 2010 at the Heartland Nursing Home of Greenville, Ohio. Catherine was born April 23, 1926 in Darke County and the daughter of the late Walter L. & Daisy (Richardson) Swartz.

Catherine was formerly employed at Corning Inc., retiring in 1991 and an active member of the Corning Retirees Club.

She was a longtime member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Greenville where she had served as the church custodian for the past 37 years and was still very active in that position. Catherine was also a former member of the Church Council, the Church Property Committee and Altar Guild. She was also a 1945 graduate of Greenville High School.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, husband—Charles “Chick” Schmidt in 1983. They were married July 3, 1946. Also by her son—Charles Schmidt Jr., son in law—Larry Marker, granddaughter—Michelle Marker, sisters—Lucinda Rismiller and Vanetta Yoder, brothers—William, Arthur and Walter Swartz.

She is survived by: son and daughter in law—Jeff & Dee Schmidt of Greenville, daughter and her fiancĂ©—Sandra Marker of Greenville and John Menchhofer of Coldwater, daughter in law and husband—Connie (Chuck) Schmidt-Waggoner of Troy, Grandchildren—Kimberly (Eric) Steele, Stacy Strait, Emily Schmidt, Tricia (Greg) Peck, Carrie (Jim) Hackney, Jared (Alicia) Marker, Casey Marker, Nathan Marker and Mackenzie Marker, Great Grandchildren—Kaitlyn Schmidt, Kaylee McDaniel, Sara & Garrett Strait, Mason, Chase & Reagan Peck, Dylan, Taylor & Piper Hackney, Owen, Luke & Sheldon Marker. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Catherine will held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday March 31, 2010 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church 131 East Fourth Street Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Peter Menke officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 till 8 P.M. in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio and on Wednesday 1 hour prior to the services in the Church.

Kenneth F. Subler (March 25, 2010)

Kenneth F. Subler, 97, former noted businessman formerly of Versailles, Ohio, and Key Colony Beach, Florida, passed away at 8:50 p.m. on March 25 at The Brethren Home in Greenville, Ohio.

Kenny was born June 21, 1912 in Frenchtown, Ohio, to the late Felix E. and Estella (Bulcher) Subler. In addition to his parents, Kenny is also preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby H. (Batty) Subler on September 11, 1973, whom he married on November 22, 1934; his second wife, Regina (Tess) A. Bordenet Settles Subler on September 16, 2002, whom he married on April 26, 1975; stepmother Bertha Goffena Subler; sister Alverda A. Bohman; brother Carl J. Subler; infant sister Catherine Subler; infant grandson Richard K. Subler; half-sister Mary Ann Berger; stepbrother Marion Goffena; stepsisters Rita Hannan, Eileen Batty, and Patricia Dabbelt.

Kenny was a 1930 graduate of Versailles High School, and was for forty-six years the owner and president of Subler Transfer, Inc., a trucking company specializing in hauling refrigerated foodstuffs. The company had offices in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, and Cherokee, Iowa. The home office was located in Versailles, Ohio. At its height, the company employed approximately 350 people. In connection with his business, Kenny was active in the American Trucking Association and held several offices therein. He also served as president of the Refrigerated Division of the Irregular Route Conference of the American Trucking Association.

Kenny was a lifetime member and a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus; lifetime member of the Lions Club and a recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award given by the Lions Club International Foundation for Dedicated Humanitarian Services, the Foundation’s highest honor; former mayor of Versailles; former Versailles school board member; Fund Drive chairman for St. Denis School and St. Denis Church, Versailles athletic track, and Darke County airport. Kenny was also a major donor to Heritage Park in Versailles and to both the Versailles YMCA and the Greenville YMCA.

In his spare time, Kenny was an avid fisherman and pilot. During World War II, he flew missions for The Civil Air Patrol, and during the course of thirty-six years of flying, was instrumental in taking more than 100 people their first plane ride.

Kenny is survived by son and daughter-in-law Edward and Shirley Subler of Versailles; son Richard Subler of Dothan, Alabama; son and daughter-in-law Bradley and Linda Subler of Monee, Illinois; daughter and son-in-law Myrna and Thomas Stone of Greenville, Ohio; former daughter-in-law Betty (Dapore) Subler Norris of Versailles; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law Dan and Dee Settles of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; stepdaughter Sister Colleen Settles of Los Angeles, California; stepdaughter and son-in-law Kathy and Richard Tait of Oveida, Florida; twelve grandchildren; and twenty-five great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Basil and Annabel Subler, half-brother and sister-in-law John and Isabella Subler, half-sister Doris Monnin, and sister-in-law Krista Subler, all of Versailles.

A private viewing will be held for family members at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles from 3:00 to 4:00 pm on Monday, March 29 with public viewing to follow from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 30. Burial will follow in St. Valbert Cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved Ruby.

The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to The Brethren Retirement Community Resident Aid Fund, Greenville, Ohio, and/or State of the Heart Hospice, also of Greenville.

Ralph E. Johnston, Sr. (March 25, 2010)

Ralph E. Johnston Sr., age 89, of Versailles, Ohio, went to be with the Lord at 10:45 A.M. on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the VA Medical Center Nursing Home in Dayton. Ralph was born October 26, 1920 in Yorkshire, Ohio, to the late Harrison and Clara (Fritz) Johnston.

Ralph was a farmer, Truck Driver and formerly worked at Worch Lumber in Versailles. Ralph served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the Versailles United Methodist Church, the Sidney D.A.V., and the Ft. Loramie American Legion.

In addition to his parents, Ralph is also preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Otis Johnston; and sister, Drusilla Hartle.

Ralph is survived by his loving wife, Mary E. (Black) Johnston, whom he married July 6, 1942. He is also survived by a daughter, Nancy Marrs of Versailles; son, Ralph Johnston Jr., of Versailles; grandchildren, Kevin Marrs of Versailles, Alicia and Sam Meadows of Taos, New Mexico, and Libby and Chad Kennard of Grand Junction, Colorado; great grandchildren, Sara Marrs of Moraine, Ohio, and Jade and Ashton Meadows of Taos, New Mexico; brother, Tom Johnston of Piqua; and sisters, Catherine McKibben of Gettysburg, Rosetta Grise of Piqua and Treva Meiring of Piqua.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles, with Pastor Rick Gutheil officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Sidney. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. and Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Versailles United Methodist Church.

Shirley L. Collins (March 25, 2010)

Shirley L. Collins, 40, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 9:50 AM at Wayne Hospital, Greenville, Ohio. She was born on May 16, 1969 in Michigan to James Hunt of Eaton, Ohio, and Evelyn (Torres) & Nick Zindorf of Englewood, Ohio.

Shirley worked at Western Ohio Podiatric as an assistant. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She loved to travel, avid sports fan and loved to follow her kids in sports.

In addition to her parents she is survived by her husband, David Collins of Greenville whom she married on October 26, 1991; children, Elizabeth Collins and Kyle Collins both at home; brother and sister in law, John & Elisabeth Hunt of CA; mother and father in law, Roger & Janice Collins of Greenville; sister in law, Dawn Collins of Dallas, Texas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a private service held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Greenville, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Sunday, March 28, 2010 from 2-6 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville.

Memorial contributions can be given to the State of the Heart Hospice or Darke County Cancer Association.

Leo R. Bryson (March 24, 2010)

Mr. Leo Ray Bryson, 65, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 5:01 AM at his residence. He was born on September 22, 1944 in Greenville, Ohio, to the late Gerald & Dorothy (Orrison) Bryson.

Leo worked as a Truck Driver for NTB. He was an avid NASCAR and football fan. He loved family camping trips and fishing with his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Leo is survived by his wife Dixie (Marshall) Bryson of Greenville, Ohio, whom he married on July 16, 1966; sons and daughters in law, Lamont R. & Deborah Bryson of Ansonia, Robert “Loren” & Laura Bryson of Greenville, and Ty & Marlo Bryson of Greenville; daughter and son in law, LaJuana “Rena” & Jon Fletcher of Greenville; grandchildren, Mandy, Matt, Natasha, Kaitlin, Andrew, Courtney, Skylar, Alec and Cameron; great grandchildren, Colton and KayLynn; sister and brother in law, Sheila & Freddie Dean of Greenville as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

There will be a service held on Monday, March 29, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville with Rev. John Nunnally officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens, Greenville, Ohio. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. There will be a Graveside Military Service conducted by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard.

Maryellen Rolfe (March 22, 2010)

Maryellen Rolfe, age 89 of Greenville, Ohio went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday March 22, 2010 at 4:03 AM at Wayne Hospital, Greenville, Ohio. She was born in Piqua, Ohio on November 27, 1920. She is the daughter of the late Albert & Nellie (Sumner) Miller.

Her priorities in life were her love for the Lord and her family. For many years she was a Sunday school teacher and enjoyed working with young people. Maryellen is a member of the Ft. Jefferson United Methodist Church in Ft. Jefferson, Ohio. Her love of life and her much appreciated sense of humor made her a warm and wonderful person. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her late husband of 65 years: Orville Rolfe. Maryellen is survived by one brother: Jack Miller of Selma, Indiana; One Son: Ron Rolfe and his wife Ruth of Jane Lew, West Virginia; One daughter: Connie Flory and her husband: Larry of Greenville, Ohio; five grandchildren: Mark & Hollie Rolfe of Dayton, Ohio, Shelly & Angela Flory of Greenville, Ohio, Robb Willis & his wife Michelle of Morgantown, West Virginia; and two great grandchildren: Misha & Zack Willis of Morgantown, West Virginia.

Services will be held on Wednesday March 24, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Doug Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Ohio. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Leroy R. Burns (March 21, 2010)

Leroy R. Bruns age 73 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 9:45 P.M. on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton. Leroy was born September 4, 1936 in Carthagena, Ohio, to the late Leo & Josephine (Olding) Bruns.

Leroy was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Frenchtown and Western Ohio Coon Hunters Club.

Leroy is survived by his wife, Almareda (Gasson) Bruns, whom he married November 30, 1957; daughter & son-in-law, Rose & Rusty Whittaker of Versailles; sons & daughters-in-law, Douglas & Jacqueline Bruns of Versailles, Dennis & Angie Bruns of Versailles and David & Lois Bruns of Versailles; 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Schuette of Celina.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Frenchtown, with Rev. Fr. David Vincent celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery in Frenchtown. Emma Grace Elliott, stillborn, of Ansonia, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 7:05 PM at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. Emma is survived by her parents, Chad & Alissa (Young) Elliott of Ansonia, Ohio; paternal grandparents, Lance & Michelle Elliott of Versailles, Ohio, and Sonja Elliott and fiancé Rick Brandon of Greenville, Ohio; and maternal grandparents, Larry & Wanda Young of Union City, Ohio.

Lillian M Kailus (March 20, 2010)

Mrs. Lillian M. Kailus, age 82 of Versailles, Ohio passed away on Saturday March 20, 2010 at 6:15 PM at Wayne Hospital, Greenville, Ohio. She was born October 3, 1927 in Darke County, Ohio the daughter of the late Lawrence E. & Bertha E. (Bang) Masner. She worked as a secretary for the Veterans Administration, Shelby Manufacturing, she assisted her sister at the Fashion Shop for 17 years and she also worked at NAPA and volunteered with Mr. Minnich at the school library.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Versailles where she served as secretary for the Women of the E.L.C.A.; she was the chairperson for funeral meals and served on several other committees for the church. She was Salutatorian of her graduating class at Versailles High School class of 1945. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren in their various activities. She was devoted to her God, Family, Church & Community.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Clarence M. Kailus on August 16, 2004 whom she married August 30, 1952; Granddaughter: Christina Marie Kailus; Sister: Leona Weaver.

She is survived by her Daughter & son in law: Susan & David Smith of Fairfield, Ohio; Son & daughter in law: Michael James & Jennifer Kailus of Belton, Missouri; Grandchildren & spouse: Sarah Elizabeth (Smith) & Dan Dinsmore, Jason Michael Smith, Megan Marie Smith, Michael Joshua Kailus, Jonathan David Kailus, Angelika Joy Kailus.

Services will be on Saturday March 27, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, Ohio with Pastor Keith Falk officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Versailles, Ohio. Clara L. Subler (March 20, 2010)

Clara L. Subler age 81, of Versailles, passed away at 5:05 A.M. on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Wayne Hospital in Greenville. Clara was born March 14, 1929 in Versailles, Ohio, to the late Louis & Eleanora Clara (Goubeaux) Barga.

Clara was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles.

In addition to her parents, Clara is also preceded in death by her husband, Edward N. Subler on August 30, 2006, whom she married April 21, 1951 at St. Denis Catholic Church; grandson, Jacob J. Subler; son-in-law, Carl Meinerding; brothers, Norbert Theodore, Martin, Paul and Noah Barga; and sisters, Cecilia Gasson, Agnes Almareda Kissinger, Lucy Petitjean and Beatrice Barga.

Clara is survived by her sons & daughter-in-law, Jerome “Jerry” Subler of Versailles and Luke & Christina “Tina” Subler of Versailles; daughters & sons-in-law, Catherine & Joseph Wenning of Coldwater, Teresa & Ed Moorman of St. Henry and Paula Meinerding of Versailles; grandchildren, Tara, Jay, Alex, Josh, Jessica, Gwen, Carmen, Jeremy, Darren, Rachel and Ryan; great grandchildren, Tasha, Trent, Tabitha, Tegan, Cassandra and Madison; brothers, Bernard Barga of Versailles, Basil Barga of Versailles, Vitalus Barga of Greenville, Mark “John” Barga of Covington and Leo Barga of Versailles; sisters, Rita Borland of Sidney and Iva Wion of Greenville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles, with Rev. Fr. David Vincent celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery in Frenchtown. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles. Sue H. Walters (March 17, 2010)

Sue Howard Walters, age 83 of Cincinnati, Ohio passed away on Wednesday March 17, 2010. She was born January 4, 1927 in Ansonia, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Ernest & Lucille (Feltman) Howard.

Sue graduated from Miami University in 1948 with a B.S. degree in marketing and merchandising. She entered Shillito’s (now Macy’s) Executive Training Program in Cincinnati. She had the privilege of co-founding (for Shillito’s) the first Junior Achievement Co. in Cincinnati. She married Ralph Walters from Dallas, Texas. Then re-entered Miami University for a 5th year in the school of education. She taught elementary school in Ansonia for 5 years and 25 years at Kilgour School in Mt. Lookout.

As a younger woman, Sue had a great interest in volunteering. She volunteered at the Cincinnati Art Museum, Bethesda Hospital and Seven Hills Neighborhood House East.

Sue was a member of Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church where she taught church school and served on the Commission of Education.

Her favorite past times were cooking, reading and her family.

Sue is survived by her daughter Lauris Woolford of Hyde Park. She is also a proud grandmother to Katie (Scott) Dalton and Shelby Woolford, great grandmother to Jacob and Alexander Dalton, sister to Polly (Mrs. William F.) Plettner of Cincinnati and Vero Beach, Florida. She is also survived by 2 nephews Dr. James (Debbie) Plettner and Mr. Bill (Karen) Plettner and their families.

Private Graveside Funeral Services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Greenville Cemetery Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Sylvia McKibben officiating. There will be no public visitation.

Lucille Mae (Good) Keeling, age 85 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Tuesday March 16, 2010 at 9:30 PM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. She was born October 3, 1924 near Degraff, Ohio the daughter of the late Rev. John & Emma (Fuls) Good. She retired from the Springfield News Paper in 1985 where she worked in the Clerk Dispatch department.

She lived most of her life in Springfield moving to Greenville in 1989. She graduated from Springfield South High School in 1943 and was a member of Greenville Church of the Brethren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: James “Jim” Keeling in 1980; Infant Grandchild in 1973; & a sister: Glenna Stroman in 2003.

Suzanne Kay Elifritz, age 69 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away Monday, March 15, 2010 at 11:02 PM at the Paradise Valley Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. She was born on July 20, 1940 in Piqua, Ohio to the late Walter & Clara (Covault) Moore.

Suzanne retired from Clopay as a billing coordinator and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Versailles.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her brother, John Moore and sister, Mary Purk.

Mrs. Phyllis E. Buchy, age 79 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 5:39 P.M. Thursday March 11, 2010 in the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center Mobile, Alabama. Phyllis was born May 5, 1930 in Darke County and the daughter of the late Benjamin & Ruth (Canan) Miller.

She was an employee of Darke County ASCS, retiring in 1990 and a former member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Greenville. Phyllis enjoyed being with her family—husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Janet Berner and her brother in law Richard Hangen.

She is survived by her husband William F. Buchy of Greenville. They were married May 24, 1947. Also by daughters and sons in law—Pamela & Neil Long of Vandalia and Marsha & James Brown of Dayton. Son and daughter in law—William M. & Joyce Buchy of Vandalia. Grandchildren—Jason Long, Justin Long, Jon Long, Julie Long, Ryan Brown, Adam Brown and Andrea DePompei. Great grandchildren—Ayden Long, Ava Long, Reagan Long and Logan Brown. Her sister Barbara Jean Hangen of Greenville and several nieces and nephews.

Private Funeral Services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Samuel Hoeflich officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Virginia L. Hair, 94, of Greenville, passed away Monday, March 15, 2010 at the Sterling House in Greenville, Oh.

She was born in Darke County, daughter of the late Frank and Opal (Huddle) Coppess. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Hair in 1991; grandson, Michael Fields in 2008; and sister, Ruth Norris.

A homemaker, she was a member of the First Congregational Christian Church in Greenville, the Emersonian Club and a former member of the Ansonia Order of Eastern Star. She was an organist for First Congregational Christian Church in Greenville, as will as for Ansonia Christian Church, and played for several weddings and events.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Mary (Robert) Fields of Ansonia and Martha (Dan) Jones of Lancaster, OH; grandchildren, Rex (Shelly) Fields, Jon (Wanda) Fields and Meridith Jones; grand daughter-in-law Ann Fields of Ansonia: 7 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Frances (John) Durr of Greenville, OH and Edna (Kenneth) Brinley of Springfield, MO.

Private Services will be held at Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with the Revs. Doug Krauss and Eric Knight co-officiating. Burial will follow in the Teegarden Cemetery near Ansonia.

Joyce L. Noggle, age 75, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday March 10, 2010 at 2:05 PM at Clarian North Medical Center in Carmel, Indiana.

Joyce was born on August 26, 1934 in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Lee Elbert & Hazel Mae (Campbell) Brown. She was a Nurses Assistant for 14 years and was a member of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church in Carmel, Indiana.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband William Noggle whom she married on December 24, 1953; Daughter, Kimberly K. Noggle; and Grandson, Brent Noggle.

She is survived by children, Daryl Brown of Cincinnati, Melody (David) Addington of Indianapolis, Indiana; Scott Noggle; Robert Noggle; and Tracy (David) Hendrix of Greenville; grandchildren, Mike Brown, Melissa Fliss, Nathan Addington, Wesley Addington, Michael Noggle, Keisha Hendrix and Devin Hendrix; brothers and sisters in law, Gary & Betty Brown of New Madison, Ohio and Cary & Lindsey Brown of New Madison, Ohio as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Adele was a homemaker and helped her husband farm. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Frenchtown and the Versailles Senior Citizens.

In addition to her parents, Adele is also preceded in death by her step father, William Paulus; husband, Paul N. Marchal; grandson, Adam Marchal; step brothers, Charles and Bob Paulus; and step sister, Lucille Coffield.

Mary E. Henninger, 93, of Arcanum, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Rest Haven, where she has resided since May of 2009. Miss Henninger was a former resident of rural Arcanum. Mary was born in Van Buren Township, Darke County on March 30, 1916, the daughter of the late George W. and Dillie May (Eller) Henninger. She was well known for being a twin of her sister Margaret and both dressed identically. Mary was known locally for hanging wall paper. She loved her soap operas. Miss Henninger was a lifetime member of the Abbottsville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers Sherman and Vernon Henninger and 3 sisters Wealtha Townsend, Mildred Fourman, and Elsie Ludy. Mary is survived by her twin sister Margaret Henninger; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and friends and neighbors. Blanche J. Bright, 93, of Greenville, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 9, 2010 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville.

Blanche was born in Darke County, daughter of the late Roy Edward and Dola Frances (McDowell) Wilt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald R. Bright in July of 1996; brothers, Leo and Ed Wilt; and sisters, Merle Eubank, Hallie Petry and Helen Woodall.

She is survived by a sister, Wanda Williamson of Greenville and several nieces and nephews.

Katherine E. Roosa, 99, formerly of Clayton, passed away Friday morning, March 5, 2010 at Englewood Manor in Englewood, OH.

She was born in Greenville, daughter of the late Homer and Faye Blanche (Hill) McNutt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence E. Roosa; a grandson, Roger Ross; brothers, Richard, Tim, Robert, Billy, Emerson "Bud", and Richard McNutt; and sisters, Mary Tegmeyer and Betty Sherry.

Joseph J. Braun, 80, of Greenville, passed away Friday morning, March 5, 2010 at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

He was born in Darke County, son of the late Edward and Anna C. (Post) Braun. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Braun and a nephew, John Braun.

Joe was a retired farmer and had retired from the Greenville Cemetery where he had worked as a grounds keeper for several years. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville.

He is survived by a brother, Cyril Braun of Greenville; sister, Luella (Jim) Deniston of Greenville; nieces and nephews, Barbara Tobias, Michael Deniston, Edward Densiton, Kathy Ayette and Tom Braun; several great nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Cheri Frost.

Esther L. Ludy, 79, of Arcanum (Painter Creek) died Friday, March 5, 2010. Mrs. Ludy had been in failing health. She was born November 29, 1930 in rural West Milton to the late John and Laura (Smith) Knife. She and her husband, Robert E. Ludy, were owners of the former Ludy's Harley Davidson Sales in Painter Creek, where she was the bookkeeper. Esther was a member of the Painter Creek Church of the Brethren, lifetime member of the Paint Creek Hog Club, a volunteer at Shawnee Prairie, and a member of the Darke County Birders. She was preceded by her husband Robert, who died May 11, 2000, and two brothers Emerson and Harold Knife. She is survived by daughter Roberta Deskins and husband Bobby of O'Fallen, MO; son Stephen Ludy and wife Barbara of rural Bradford; granddaughter Michelle Deskins; 2 nephews Garry & Jerry Knife. Curtis L. McEldowney, Jr. (March 4, 2010)

Curtis L. McEldowney, Jr., 53, of Ansonia, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 4, 2010 at the emergency room of Wayne Hospital.

He was born in Greenville, the son of the late Curtis L. and Rebecca E. (Sanders) McEldowney. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Scott McEldowney.

Curtis had worked at Spartech Plastics in Greenville for 17 years prior to his retirement.

He is survived by his children, Aaron McEldowney of Columbus, Victoria Perlta of Albuquerque, NM and Erica (Jeremy McNerney) McEldowney of St. Henry; a grandson, Cameron McEldwoney; brothers, Duane (Roxanne) McEldowney of New Madison and Terry McEldwoney of Versailles; and a sister, Kay (Apolo) Perez of New Weston; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville on Monday, March 8, at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Simmons officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 4-7 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the family.

Sondra S. Hale (March 1, 2010)

Sondra S. Hale, 62, of Greenville passed away on March 1, 2010 at her residence. Sondra was born on May 14, 1947 daughter of the late Eugene D. Sutton and Marjorie (Cooper) Sutton in Wabash, Indiana.

Sondra retired from Honeywell in Greenville, Ohio after 18 years of service and later worked for Beauty Supply Group for five years. Sondra enjoyed playing Bingo, but most of all she loved the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.

Sondra is survived by her loving husband, Jayallen, whom she married on March 6, 1971; three sons, Anthony D. Hale (Paula) of Gyton, Georgia, Matthew J.(Beth) Hale of Greenville, Ohio, Rodd A. (Brenda) Hale of Arcanum, Ohio; three daughters, Tammy R. Hale of Greenville, Ohio, Shelley (Rick) Bohn of Greenville, Ohio, and Renee Barnes of Barstow, California; one daughter-in-law, Becky Hale of New Paris, Ohio; thirteen grandchildren, Jessie (Shaun) King of Greenville, Ohio, Jeremy (Laurie) Bohn of Greenville, Ohio, Clint Hale and Kylee Hale of Arcanum, Ohio, Cody Barnes and Amanda Barnes of Barstow, California, Shelby Hale of Liberty, Indiana, Kasen and Jason, Jr. Hale of New Paris, Ohio, Morgan, Sydney and Kiley Hale of Gyton, Georgia, Kyndle McDonald of Connersville, Indiana, Brad Bohn of Lynn, Indiana and Laci Hale of Greenville, Ohio; seven great-granchildren, Noah, Vaughn and Seth King of Greenville, Ohio, Mason and Amanda Barnes of Barstow, California and Jackson and Ava Grace Bohn of Lynn, Indiana; two brothers, Sheldon E. A visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Lighthouse Christian Center in Greenville, Ohio. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 3:00 PM with Rev. Danny Wright being asked to officiate with burial being in Greenmound Cemetery, New Madison, Ohio.

Janice E. Lathrop (February 20, 2010)

Janice E. (Suman) Lathrop, 81, of New Paris, passed away on February 20, 2010 at Heartland of Eaton. Janice was born November 25, 1928 in Camden, Ohio to the late Ira and Olive Suman.

Janice dedicated her whole life to her family as a home maker.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Russell Lathrop in May of 2006; a daughter Judy Eleene Carico; one brother Donny Suman; and a sister Betty Zimmerman.

Janice is survived by one son, Danny and Phyllis Morgan; two daughters, Rose Ann Hobbs and Stephanie Macy; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a special cousin Beverly Maxwell.

Kylee J. Reece (February 28, 2010)

Kylee J. Reece, 5, passed away on February 28, 2010 in Jellico, Tennessee after a car accident. Kylee was born on February 10, 2005 in Greenville, Ohio, daughter of Ben and Trisha (Anthony) Reece.

Kylee was a very loving child and was known for having many special relationships. She loved Jesus, church and kids club. She loved taking care of people and ‘mothering’ other kids. Kylee was also known for winning the ‘Don’t Smile Game’ at the dinner table, never cracking under pressure. Kylee was an animal lover, especially cats. She loved swimming, cherry tomatoes, popsicles, DS games, dressing up, painting her nails and being girly. She enjoyed school and was very smart. Kylee loved singing and her sweet voice will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Kylee is survived by three sisters, Morgan, Megan and Mya; one brother, Dylan; grandparents, Wiley and Carol Reece and Harry and Wendelin Anthony; great-grandparents, Joel and Lorene Bayer and Ralph Garber, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Kylee was preceded in death by several great-grandparents, Betty Garber, Wiley L. Reece, Delphia C. Reece, Paul Anthony and Louise Anthony.

A visitation for family and friends will be Monday, March 8, 2010 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Pleasant View Missionary Church, 5231 Gettysburg-Pitsburg Road, Bradford, Ohio. A funeral service is planned for Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 10:00 AM also at Pleasant View Missionary Church with Gale Turner, Bill Cornett, Jim Hughes and Kirby Crist being asked to officiate. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery.

David C. Lewis, III (March 3, 2010)

David C. “Davey” Lewis III, age 10 of 111 Walker St., Greenville, Ohio, was called home to be with the Lord on March 3, 2010 after a brave battle with Leukemia. He was born on August 31, 1999 to David C. & Heather (Barnes) Lewis Jr. In addition to his parents he is survived by his brother Stephen; sister Chyanna; maternal grandmother Brenda and uncle Stetson, all of Greenville; paternal grandfather David C. Lewis Sr. of Lexington, KY; his puppy Bolt; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends; as well as all the caring doctors, nurses and patients at Children’s Medical Center. David is preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Lewis; great grandparents, Bill & Neva Barnes, Dorothy & Elmer Benge, and Clay & Eleanor Lewis.


There will be a service held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 10:30 AM at the Greenville Church of the Brethren, 421 Central Avenue, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Ron Sherck and Pastor Gary Wagner co-officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery, Greenville, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Monday, March 8, 2010 from 5-8 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Charlotte E. Frick (March 2, 2010)

Charlotte Emma (Weaver) Frick age 87, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 2:30 A.M. on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at her son’s residence. Charlotte was born April 10, 1922 in Grand Junction, Colorado, to the late Henry H. Weaver & Viola H. (Miller) Weaver Moss.

Charlotte was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, Charlotte is also preceded in death by her step father, Loring I. Moss; husband, George O. Frick; brothers, Albert & Delbert Weaver; sisters, Hazel Weaver & Ida “Mrs. Lloyd Keeny”; and 10 step brothers and step sisters.

Charlotte is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Glen O. & Shirley Frick of Greenville and Daryl D. & Sieglinda Frick of Thomasville, Pennsylvania; daughters & sons-in-law, Gloria A. & Mervin Hilty of New Madison, Linda L. Frick of Gettysburg and Retha Y. & Robert Musser of Lititz, Pennsylvania; 18 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; sister & brother-in-law, Arvilla M. & Ray Keeny of New Freedom, Pennsylvania; brother-in-law, Lloyd & Catherine Keeny of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law, Betty Weaver of Lititz, Pennsylvania and Marie Keck of Canton, Ohio; step sister-in-law, Beulah Reed of Dallas Center, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Norma L. Kuhnle (February 28, 2010)

Norma L. Kuhnle age 91 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on February 28, 2010 at 12:55 AM at the Brethren Retirement Community. Norma was born on January 21, 1919 in Palestine, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Bert & Eva (Riggle) Hiatt. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband: Eugene “Joe” Kuhnle; one sister: Mary Garbig; two brothers: Glenn & Ralph Hiatt.

She is survived by her two daughters & sons in law: Gloria & Jack Horner of Greenville, & Maxine & Gary Kingrey of Arcanum; three Grandsons & spouses: Kevin Horner of Vandalia, David & Kami Horner of Pitsburg, & Mike & Chris Horner of Helena, Montana; two Granddaughters & spouse: Kim & Scott Morrison of Arcanum, Renee Wilcox of Arcanum; nine great grandchildren: Matthew & Rachael Horner, Jaden, Marcus, & Rayna Horner, Lindsey & Anthony Terrace, Tyler Morrison, Kaylee & Alexis Wilcox & numerous nieces & nephews. Norma enjoyed being a farm wife, homemaker, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on March 4, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Rev. Richard Venus & Pastor Gary Oser officiating. Burial will follow in Greenmound Cemetery, New Madison, Ohio. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Thursday at the funeral home. Charles E. Gilliland, Jr. (March 2, 2010)

Charles E. Gilliland, Jr., 75, of New Weston, OH, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March 2, 2010 at his residence.

He was born in New Weston, son of the late Charles E., Sr. and Erma M. (Fast) Gilliland. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Susie (Liette) Gilliland on June 24, 2003; three brothers, Darlene, Jerry "Jake" and Owen Gilliland; and two sisters, Jean Shultz and Donna Sanders.

Charlie had drove a bulldozer for Jim Dull, was a mechanic and had retired from Fourman's Sand and Gravel in Greenville. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his children, Karen (Gary) French of Celina, Diana (Mark) Kittle of Celina, Charlotte (Howard) Brutsch of Sumter, SC and Mary (John) Hill of Redkey, IN; grandchildren, Jennifer Lyme, Charlie (Kristen) Brutsch, Howie Brutsch, Mara Gilliland and Zackary Hill; great grandchildren, Skyler Lyme and Kelsey Mamazza; and his best friend, Sadie.

Services with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be held at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville, Monday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2-6 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Ansonia Area Emergency Service.

Alvin C. York, Sr. (March 2, 2010)

Alvin C. York, Sr., 63, of Greenville, went to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning, March 2, 2010 at his residence.

He was born in Fonde, Kentucky, son of the late Calvin G. and Flora Nan (Powers) York. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Mark G. York on January 26, 2003; and six brothers, Floyd, Willis, Herbert, Kenneth, Ozzie and Charles York.

Al was retired from the former Treaty Company in Greenville having driven truck for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy K. (Shell) York, whom he married January 27, 1968; children, Alvin C. York, Jr. of Moraine and Tammy (Kennith) Branham of Oakwood, OH; grandchildren, Kendra (Camilo) Cano, Shelly Branham, Samantha Branham and Rebecca York; a great grandson, Adan Marcus Cano; a brother, Carl E. York of Moraine; and three sisters, Delores (John) Smith of Athens, AL, Sue Leisey of Greenville and Linda Wynn of Coweta, OK.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 5 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home, Greenville. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Ft. Jefferson.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12 p.m. Friday till 1 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Spirit Medical Transport, 5484 St. Rt. 49 S., Greenville, OH 45331.
