Nicholas L. Grillot (April 29, 2010)

Nicholas L. Grillot, age 64 of Versailles, Ohio passed away on Thursday April 29, 2010 at 2:10 PM as the result of a farming accident. He was born March 23, 1946 in Osgood, Ohio the son of the late Vitales & Venera (Bergman) Grillot.

He was a retired dairy farmer and served in Vietnam in the United States Marine Corp. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church and the Osgood American Legion Honor Guard Post # 588.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Daughters: Natalie & Emily Grillot; Sister: Judith Grillot; Brother in law: Keith Barger.

Burial will follow in St. Valbert Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday May 2, 2010 and on Monday from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, Ohio. Helen M. Morris (April 27, 2010)

Helen Marie Morris, age 101 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday April 27, 2010 at 2:28 PM at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Greenville, Ohio. She was born March 19, 1909 in Darke County, Ohio the daughter of the late Art & Ada (Henderson) Routzong.

She was a homemaker and a floral designer for several flower shops. She was a member of Painter Creek Church of the Brethren and the Gettysburg Garden Club.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Clarence Morris whom she married on September 28, 1926; Son in law: Alvin “Junior” Riegle; Brother: Dale Routzong; Sisters: Martha June Hollinger, Mildred “Babe” Routzong.

She is survived by her daughter: Ruthanna Riegle of Greenville; & friends: Frank & Alex Marchal.

Services will be held on Saturday May 1, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor David Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in Abbottsville Cemetery. Larry Harris (April 25, 2010)

Larry Harris, 62, of Richmond, Indiana passed away on April 25, 2010 at Reid Hospital Larry was born on April 26, 1947 in Leslie County, Kentucky to the late Tom and Becky (Wells) Harris.


Larry worked for many years as an auto repairman for Pete’s Body Shop in Richmond, Indiana. He loved to paint cars and was gifted at his craft. Larry was a quiet, private person. He was an avid fisherman and loved to watch old western movies. Larry was enrolled at Ivy Tech to be a counselor. He loved pineapple upside down cake and fresh garden vegetables such as green onions and tomatoes. Larry also enjoyed cooking. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him!

In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by a brother, Deptin Harris; a great-grand daughter, Leanna Cameron and a niece, Jessica Legear.

Larry is survived by his life companion, Mary Cole of Richmond; four sons, Nathan and Pam Harris of Hollansburg, Steve and Savanna Harris of Union City, Ohio, Adam and Kyleen Harris of Richardson, Texas and David and Catheryn Harris of New Madison, Ohio; five daughters; Nancy and Cory Hower of Geneva, Indiana, Natalie and Bill Malott of New Madison, Amy and Scott Johns of Union City, Ohio, Vickie and Mark Deeter of Laura, Ohio and Stacy and Travis Loy of Bryant, Indiana; one brother, Jerry and Angela Harris of New Paris; four sisters, Shirley and Robert Burk of Hollansburg, Lula and Clyde Boomershine of Lynn, Indiana, Naomi and Tony Hawley of Winchester, Indiana and Sharon Baldwin of Olcott, New York, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends will receive guests on Friday, April 30, 2010 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Braund Funeral Home in New Madison. A celebration of life funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Rodney Robinson being asked to officiate. Marlin D. Thompson (April 28, 2010)

Dr. Marlin D. Thompson,72 of Ansonia, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville from complications for cancer and a stroke.


Dr. Thompson was well known as a champion for education, not just in Darke County but throughout Ohio. He obtained a bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University, a master's degree from Miami University and a doctorate of education from Ball State University. He spent 33 years in education, seven as a teacher and principal in Pauling County, Ohio, and thirteen years as superintendent of Ansonia Local Schools. He went on to serve as Darke County Superintendent of Schools for another thirteen years. During this time, he served as Ohio Local School Superintendent's Association president and spent many hours traveling to Columbus as an advocate for public schools. During his tenure as County Superintendent, Dr Thompson also founded the Darke County Hope Foundation, which provides charitable support in areas such as education, the arts, social services and other community projects. Dr. Thompson also was an active member of several community boards, including the Wayne Hospital Board of Trustees, Chamber of Commerce and Mental Health Board. He also played an active role in bringing a medical center to Ansonia.

Dr. Thompson retired from education in 1993 and began his own construction business, retiring again in 2002. He was a member of the Ansonia United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for twenty years. He also served as a Sunday School teacher, trustee, chair of the Pastor/Parish Committee and co-chair of the Building Fund Committee.

Dr. Thompson resided just north of Ansonia and raised Belgian draft horses, and he and his wife, Shirley, gave carriage rides at Christmas and other special occasions. Although Dr. Thompson grew up on the Van Wert area, Darke County became his home. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and was a big fan of Ohio State athletics.

He is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Shirley; daughter, Jill (Andy)Ulrich of Blanchester,OH; grandsons Kyle and Justin Thompson of Ansonia; sisters, Jean Feasby of Antwerp, OH and Eunice Cook of Phoenix, AZ; brother, Byron (Kathy) Thompson of Convoy, OH; sister-in-law, Carla Miller of Van Wert OH; brother-in-law, Robert Lybarger of Van Wert, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ned, his parents, Lester and Mary Thompson and three sisters, Mildred Delong of Van Wert, OH, Virginia Dawson of Convoy, OH and Marjorie Taylor of Convoy, OH.

There will be a memorial service held at the Ansonia United Methodist Church at 3:30p.m., on Friday May 7, with visitation with family from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Pastors Joe Royer and Fred Herron will be officiating. Preferred Memorials to Ansonia United Methodist Church or The Hope Foundation of Darke County.

Mildred I. Lanich (April 24, 2010)

Mrs. Mildred I. Lanich age 89 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 7:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville. Mildred was born June 25, 1920 in Darke County, Ohio, to the late Ronald H. “Steinie” & Edna (Rolfe) Riffle.


Mildred retired from the former G.C. Murphy Co in Greenville, with 23 years of service. She was a former member of the Swinging 8’s Square Dance Club of Darke County.

In addition to her parents, Mildred is also preceded in death by her husband, Eldon E. Lanich on November 2, 1997; brother, Ronnie Riffle; and sisters, Marjorie Byram and Doris Mikesell.

Mildred is survived by a son & daughter-in-law, Larry L. & Cheryl Lanich of Greeley, Colorado; daughters & son-in-law, Marcia A. & Randy Rhoades of Greenville and Bonnie A. Wagner of Greenville; 6 grandchildren ; 12 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; brothers & sisters-in-law, R. Dale & Patricia Riffle of Greenville and James & Kay Riffle of Ansonia; sisters & brothers-in-law; Jean & Leon Stump of Ft. Recovery, Ruby & Junior Coby of Greenville and Linda & Ralph Wood of Ansonia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Paul D. Williams (April 24, 2010)

Paul Dean Williams age 77, of Ansonia, Ohio, went to be with the Lord and his son at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Paul was born May 27, 1932 in Trinway, Ohio, to the late Harley H. & Tonnie (Mosholder) Williams.

Paul was a linotype operator for the Greenville Daily Advocate. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Paul was a member of the Greenville American Legion.

In addition to his parents, Paul is also preceded in death by a son, Michael Dean Williams; brothers, Don, Ron, Esten and James Williams; and a sister, Eileen Bice.

Paul is survived by his wife, Roberta (Boyd) Williams, whom he married October 13, 1988; children, Connie & Keith Fourman of Greenville, Dan Williams of Greenville, Dave Williams of Greenville and Lisa Klosterman of Greenville; step daughters, Becky Nunley of Greenville and Vickie Norrod of Greenville; daughter-in-law, Penny Williams of Pikeville; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; and brother & sister-in-law, Harold & Wava Williams of Kansas.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville, with Pastor Steve Short officiating. Burial will follow in Ansonia Cemetery, Ansonia, Ohio. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 12:00 to 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard.

Helen M. DeMange (April 23, 2010)

On Friday, April 23, 2010, Helen M. DeMange, age 88, entered into the Kingdom of God at 7:42 p.m. surrounded by her loving family at her residence in Versailles, Ohio. She was born September 12, 1921, to Peter and Elizabeth Paulus of Russia, Ohio. She married Paul R. DeMange on January 11, 1941. He preceded her in death on September 13, 1982.

She is survived by 14 children (7 boys and 7 girls) Carl (Diana), Joan, Marilyn (Jerry) Bensman, Elaine (Ron) Marshall, and Ken (Angie) of Versailles, Ohio; Betty (Bob) Poeppelman and Rick (Marg) of Osgood, Ohio; Marjorie (Paul) Bruey, Ernie (Diane), and Leroy (Ann) of Yorkshire, Ohio; Nancy (Harold) Niekamp of Minster, Ohio; Ed (Sue) of Rossburg, Ohio; Theresa (Bob) Hemmelgarn of North Star, Ohio; and Roger (Kris) of St. Henry, Ohio. She was the proud grandmother of 45 living and 4 deceased grandchildren, 2 living step grandchildren, 66 living and 3 deceased great-grandchildren, and 1 living step great-grandchild.

Also surviving are her sister Sarah Magoto and sister-in-law Bernice Paulus, both of Russia, Ohio. Preceded in death are her sisters Catherine Magoto, Christina Carity, Laura and Martha; and brothers Stephen, Lawrence, Adrian, and Tom.

Helen attended St. Nicholas Catholic Church where she was a member of the St. Barbara Ladies Sodality.

Friends and family of Helen may pay their last respects at the Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles, Ohio, Tuesday, April 27, 2010, from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., and on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. A funeral Mass will be officiated by the Reverend David Zink on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Osgood, Ohio. Helen’s final resting place will be at St. Martin’s Cemetery in Osgood, Ohio.

Constance K. Hobbs (April 22, 2010)

Constance Kaye “Connie” Hobbs, age 63 of Greenville, Ohio lost her courageous 2 year battle against breast cancer on Thursday April 22, 2010 at Hospice of Dayton. Connie was born on February 24, 1947 in Anderson, Indiana to Bernard K. Dent of Greenville and the late Mary Jane (Dawley) Dent.

She was the dedicated wife of Duane Hobbs, whom she married November 29, 1969. The loving mother of Stacy Hobbs and Scott (Michelle) Hobbs all of Greenville, Ohio; the cherished sister of Christy (Jason) Fisher of Greenville and David (Barb) Dent of Rockford, Ill.; grandma of Lillian, Madeline and Lincoln Hobbs; aunt of 1 niece and 3 nephews. Connie was preceded in death by 2 nephews.

Connie was a devoted Registered Nurse and teacher who especially cherished her dear friends and colleagues at Upper Valley Joint Vocational School as well as her longtime friends near and far. She was a 1965 graduate of Grenville High School and a 1968 graduate of the Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing. Connie was a dedicated RN of Doctors Graves and Garrison and Dr. William S. Elliott. She taught the Diversified Health Occupations Program at Greenville High School prior to teaching the current Medical Tech Prep Program at UVJVS for nearly 25 years before her retirement.

Connie was a member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, served on the Financial Assistance for Medical Emergencies (FAME) board in many capacities, instructed Lamaze Childbirth classes for numerous years, a member of the Darke County Nurse Education Council, and a member of First United Methodist Church of Greenville where she performed in the Hand Bell Choir for many years.

A Celebration of Connie’s Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday May 1, 2010 in the First United Methodist Church 202 West Fourth Street Greenville, Ohio with Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Burial at the convenience of the family will take place in the Abbottsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the Celebration of Life Service in the Church.

Delbert “Jr.” Lee, age 79 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Thursday April 22, 2010 at 10:20 PM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. He was born February 15, 1931 in Darke County, Ohio the son of the late Delbert F. & Myrtle (Holsapple) Lee. He worked at Shraders and served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Greenville.

He is preceded in death by his parents; & Wife: Willadean J. (Clark) Lee whom he married December 24, 1955.

Betty L. (Gower) Sleppy age 82, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 11:20 P.M. on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville. Betty was born July 31, 1927 in Castine, Ohio, to the late Perry & Dana (Seman) Gower.

Betty was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Greenville.

In addition to her parents, Betty was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jane Smith; brothers, Adrian, Harvey and Dick Gower, and Paul Youst; and sisters, Mary Baslinger and Phyllis Kuhnle.

Patricia M. Bey age 82, formerly of Russia & Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 7:55 P.M. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in the E.R. at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy. Patricia was born November 19, 1927 in Sidney, Ohio, to the late Raymond & Agnes (Peltier) Dapore.

Patricia formerly worked at Orr Felt in Piqua, Poultry Producers and Weaver Brothers in Versailles. She was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles. She was a former member of St. Remy Catholic Church in Russia, St. Anne’s Sodality and Versailles Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, Patricia is also preceded in death by her husband, Paul N. Bey on July 15, 2005, whom she married April 9, 1947; son, Basil Bey; great grandson, Mason Bey; and a grandson-in-law, Adam Kemp.

Patricia is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Thomas & Theresa Bey of Sidney and Bill & Karen Bey of Ft. Loramie; daughter & son-in-law, Gloria & Donald Stonerock of Piqua; grandchildren, Tracy Bey, Tiffany & Shon Kemp, Jennifer & Dan Jacobs, Keith & Paula Bey and Joseph Stonerock; great grandchildren, Alyssa, Brianna and Emma Kemp, Chelsey and Kurt Stonerock, Samantha, Alexis, Renee and Ryan Jacobs, and Levi Bey; and step great granddaughter, Kayla Kemp.

Jon D. "Jay" Wolfe (April 21, 2010)

Jon D. "Jay" Wolfe, 71, of rural Arcanum, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Wayne Hospital. Jay was born in Sidney, Ohio on December 26, 1938, the son of the late Clarence and Nancy (Chalmers) Wolfe. He was a retired sheet metal worker for Local 24, Dayton. Jay is preceded in death by his wife Audrey (Rudd) Wolfe who died May 25, 2006, a brother Gale Wolfe and a sister Patricia Frye. He is survived by daughter Donna Guy of Huber Heights; son Norman Whiteman and wife Beverly of Desoto, TX; 4 grandchildren Troy, Adam, and Andrea Whiteman and Leslie Guy; 5 great grandchildren; brother Tom Wolfe of Sidney and a very good friend and neighbor Bonnie Horner. Ezra D. Miller (April 18, 2010)

Ezra David Miller, 84, of Greenville passed away April 18, 2010 at Gade Nursing Home. Dave was born April 5, 1926 in Darke County, Ohio to the late Ezra I. and Elizabeth “Betty” (Martin) Miller.

Dave was a 1944 graduate of Gettysburg High School. He worked faithfully for many years as a feed salesman for Keller Feed and Grain. Dave liked working with many different types of animals and enjoyed tending to his garden. He spent much of his retirement traveling and enjoying life, and was a member of Oakland Church of the Brethren. Dave served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army serving in Tokyo and the Philippines liberation during WWII and was honored for his efforts with several service medals.

In addition to his parents, Dave is preceded in death by his wife, Mabel (Bartram) Miller in 1989; two brothers, Alvin James Miller and a brother in infancy; three sisters, Donna Miller, Lucy Kay Martin, and Betty Ann Miller.

Dave is survived by longtime friend Jerome and Yvonne Hoschour of Bradford; four brothers, William O. and June Miller of Bradford, Adrian and Grace Miller of Bradford, Norman and Deloris Miller of Greenville, and Marvin and Marilyn Miller of Bradford; two sisters, Marcia M. Miller of Greenville, and Shirley and Jim Smith of New Madison; one brother- in-law, Joe L. Martin of Greenville and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will receive guests on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 from 5 – 7 PM at Braund Funeral Home in New Madison. A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 10:30 AM also at the funeral home with the Rev. Bradly Martin being asked to officiate. Patricia A. Baker, 79, of Greenville, passed away late Monday evening, April 19, 2010, at Wayne Hospital in Greenville.

She was born March 15, 1931 in Darke County, daughter of the late Clyde R. and Lena Mae (Gloor) Thomas. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul D. Baker and a brother, Keith Thomas.

Pat is survived by her son, Kristopher Baker of New Lebanon; a sister, Leota Thomas of San Rafael, CA; and a brother, Clyde R. Thomas, Jr. of Ashland, OH.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 24 at 11:30 a.m. at the Greenville Cemetery (new part).

Dolores K. Shotz (April 17, 2010)

Dolores K. Shotz, 83, of Versailles, passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening, April 17, 2010 at her residence.

She was born August 11, 1926 in the Ft. Loramie area, daughter of the late Anthony and Lucille (Eck) Bornhorst. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Vitalis Magoto in 1955; second husband, Norbert Magoto in 1969; and her third husband, Wilbur Shotz in 2008; and two step brothers, Morris and Walter Brandaway.

Dolores was retired from restaurant work. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Frenchtown, the Greenville VFW auxiliary and the Saint Ann's sodality of the Frenchtown Church.

She is survived by her children, Joe (Linda) Magoto of Ansonia, Pam (Paul) Weaver of Greenville, David (friend Lana) Shotz of Greenville, Stella (Susan Shotz) Gunthery and friend Larry of Greenville and Mark (friend Karen) Shotz of Texas; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; brother, James (Carol) Bornhorst of Ft. Loramie; step brothers, Joseph (Ginny) Brandaway, Lester Brandaway and Paul (Rosie) Brandaway all of the Ft. Loramie area; step sister, Joann (Paul) Maurer of Ft. Loramie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Frenchtown with the Rev. Fr. David Vincent celebrating. Burial will follow in the Holy Family Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville, Thursday from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service being offered at 4:45 p.m.

Todd Lee Prenger (April 17, 2010)

Mr. Todd Lee Prenger, 41 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2010 after suffering a tragic accident at the YMCA in Versailles, Ohio. He was born on July 3, 1968 in Greenville, Ohio to Larry & Diane (Berry) Prenger of Versailles, Ohio.

Todd worked in Sales at Systemax Inc. in Fletcher, Ohio. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, Versailles. He was a coach for youth baseball, soccer and basketball and was an avid weight lifter. He was a 1987 graduate of Versailles High School and a 1991 graduate of Bowling Green University. Todd will always be remembered as a wonderful husband, father and son.

He is preceded in death by his grandfather, George Berry and grandparents, Leo & Katherine Prenger.

In addition to his parents Todd is survived by his wife Kim (Caudill) Prenger of Versailles, Ohio whom he married on October 11, 1997; twin son and daughter, Cole & Jaden Prenger how live at home; brother and sister in law, Craig & Tammy Prenger of Versailles; sister and brother in law, Stacy & Dan Grisez of Versailles; grandmother, Pauline Berry of Versailles; step grandmother, Edna Prenger of Versailles; father and mother in law, Julian & Glenna Caudill of St. Paris, Ohio; sisters in law, Michelle (Randy) Tyler of St. Paris, Ohio and Jenny Caudill of St. Paris, Ohio; nieces, Cassie Prenger, Courtney Prenger, Macy Grisez, Hannah Grisez, Whitney Tyler, Olivia Tyler and Madison Tyler; and nephews, Marcus Grisez and Noah Grisez.

Dwain C. Burk (April 17, 2010)

Mr. Dwain C. Burk, 71 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 6:35 AM at Wayne Hospital. Greenville, Ohio. He was born on May 27, 1938 in Darke County, Ohio to the late Allen & Marcella (Lancih) Burk.

Dwain was retired from Fram/Honeywell. He attended the Triumphant Christian Center and enjoyed going out to the bow and arrow club.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Burk; sisters, Shirley, Phyllis, and Gloria Edna Burk as well as a stillborn sister.

He is survived by his brother Harold Burk of Greenville; sister Rowena Burk of Greenville as well as numerous cousins.

There will be a service held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville with Pastor Sam Shilot officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbottsville Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Bedford I. Tuggle (April 15, 2010)

Mr. Bedford Ivan Tuggle, age 77 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 5:00 A.M. Thursday April 15, 2010 at his residence in Greenville. Bedford was born October 18, 1932 in Junction City, Kentucky and the son of the late Hiram & Mirtie (Gilbert) Tuggle.

Bedford was retired from farming.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Gary Alan Tuggle, grandson Bruce Cox and Sister Eva Carol Buell.

Bedford is survived by his wife Irene (Conner) Tuggle of Greenville. They were married January 7, 1951. Also survived by sons and daughters in law—David & Terri Tuggle of South Carolina, Toney & Linda Tuggle of Maine and Billy Tuggle of South Carolina. Daughters and son s in law—Regina & Roger Perry of Eaton, Ohio, Carol & Douglas Littman of Greenville, Bonnie & Rev. Jack Qualls of Tennessee, Arlene Bokern of Florida and Valerie & Paul Piepho of Alabama. There are 20 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Also sisters—Lorine McKeever of Dayton, Ohio, Betty Campbell of Florida and Brother Bill Tuggle of South Carolina.

Private Memorial Services will be held at the convenience of the family with son in law Rev. Jack Qualls officiating.

Ruthanna M. Willets (April 16, 2010)

Ruthanna M. (Oler) Willetts, 82, of New Madison, passed away on Friday, April 16, 2010 at the Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond. Ruthanna was born July 18, 1927, daughter of the late Ralph Edward and Helen Juanita (Howell) Oler.

Ruthanna was a 1945 graduate of New Madison High School and was a self employed business owner working as a printer and publisher and also in manufacturing. She attended college at the Miami Jacobs School for Business. Ruthanna was a member of the Eastern Star and served as the Grand Paige of Ohio. She loved cross word puzzles, attending to her garden and flowers, shopping, gambling, reading and she was also a great cook. She and her husband Hutch traveled the world together. She will always be known as the world’s greatest mother, grandmother and friend.

In addition to her parents, Ruthanna was preceded in death by her sister Mary Alice Downing.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert Hutchinson (Hutch) Willetts (who loved her the best); two sons, Kris ( Keila ) Willetts of New Madison and Kim and wife Liz Willetts also of New Madison; seven grandchildren, Kristian and wife Amy Willetts, Lysa Greer, Kyle and wife Jennifer Willetts, Meredith Willetts, Miranda Willetts, Benjamin Willetts and Mason Willetts; five great grandchildren; a brother-in-law Ned Downing and a very close friend Becky Mergeler.

A public visitation will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2010 from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Storch Braund Funeral Home in New Madison. A celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff Willetts being ask to officiate also at the funeral home. Vinnie V. Tinsman (April 14, 2010)

Sister Vinnie V. Tinsman, born on June 18, 1946, to W.R. Covington and Margaret Covington, passed away to her everlasting reward on April 14, 2010, in Greenville, Ohio, at the age of sixty-three. She was raised with two other siblings, both brothers. She was wed to Jerry Tinsman Sr. in 1964 and was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Rhoda (Tinsman) Rabel, and three sons-Jerald Ray, Jerald Russel and Jerald David. She is survived by two brothers, Ransom Covington and Wayne Covington, her husband Jerald Sr., their sons and daughters, Jay, Vicki, Rachael, Tim, Ray, Paul, Pauletta, Dustin and Anthony; 38 grandchildren, and many brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.

Services will be held on Sunday April 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Church of God 5065 State Route 49 south, Greenville, Ohio with Brother Randy Hargrove officiating. Burial will follow in Church of God Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday at the church. Roger D. Magoto (April 13, 2010)

Roger D. Magoto age 62, of Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 5:30 P.M. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at his residence. Roger was born January 7, 1948 in Piqua, Ohio, to the late Paul & Hilda (Severt) Magoto.

Roger retired from General Motors in Dayton. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles and the Versailles Eagles Aerie # 2347.

In addition to his parents, Roger is also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Lee Magoto.

Roger is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Davidson) Magoto, whom he married June 26, 1971. He is also survived by a son & daughter-in-law, Jamie & Dana Magoto of Russia; daughter & son-in-law, Renee & Dane Miller of Versailles; grandchildren, Damon, Kaleb, Grifon, Xavier, Kaden, Sayer & Finley; brothers & sisters-in-law, Michael & Kathy Magoto of Russia and Carl & Helen Magoto of Celina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Inez M. (Still) Warner, 94 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 4:50 PM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. She was born on April 24, 1915 in Camden, Alabama to the late Gird B. & Minnie L. (Lamkin) Still.

Inez was a housewife, a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ and Women’s Guild and was an avid gardener.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Warner whom she married on December 7, 1945 and 3 brothers.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Robert & Victoria Warner of Greenville, Ohio; grandchildren, Brian (Christy) Warner of Streator, Illinois, Daniel (Chrissy) Warner of Calabash, North Carolina, and Jason & Amber Warner of Arcanum, Ohio; great grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Christian and Madison Warner.

There will be a private graveside service held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in the Greenville Cemetery, Greenville, Ohio. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville. Ruth Witters (nee Guillozet) of Versailles passed away Sunday, April 11 at Heartland of Greenville. She was retired from Fram Corp. She is preceded in death by her parents: Norbert and Edna Guillozet, husband Bill; brother: Bob; and sisters: Delores and Martha.

Survivors include 4 sons and daughters-in-law: Bill and Terri, Jason and Rhea, Steve and Kristy and Keith and Jill. Eleven grandchildren: Brandon, Sean, Emily, Zachery, Megan, Chelsea, Kayla, Mark, Leah, Lance and Lucas. Also surviving are 2 sisters: Dottie Alexander (Jim) and Carol Frock, and sister-in-law Phyllis Guillozet. Many nieces and nephews. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Greenville Twp. Memorial Gardens. Janice was a STNA at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville.

Thelma Hans (April 11, 2010)

Mrs. Thelma Hans, age 86 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 6:50 A.M. Sunday April 11, 2010 at her residence. Thelma was born May 22, 1923 in Darke County and the daughter of the late Raymond and Goldie (Riegle) Hughes.

She was a homemaker and had been employed as the Auditor’s Office in the Darke County Courthouse.
Thelma was a member of the Liberty Bells, the National Homemaker’s Council and the Country Women of the World.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Diana Hans, a son Larry Hans and her two sisters Kathryn Burns and Doris Oakes.

She is survived by her husband Noah “Jim” Hans of Greenville. They were married March 20, 1943. Also by her daughters Debbie & Dan Goodwin of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Kathy Hans of Greenville and her special friend Larry Eley of Arcanum. Grandsons Shawn Goodwin and Craig Goodwin, great grandchildren Tristan Goodwin and Kayla Goodwin as well as nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday April 15, 2010 in the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with the Rev. Mick Whistler officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery Ft. Jefferson. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 till 7 P.M. in the funeral home.

Mr. James R. Rench, age 52 of Arcanum, Ohio passed away on Thursday April 8, 2010 at 10:52 PM at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. He was born June 14, 1957 in Greenville, Ohio the son of Patricia (Harter) Rench of Dayton, Ohio and the late Glenn Rench.

He was the owner of McMillers Carryout, and he and served as a councilman for the Village of Arcanum. He attended Laura Christian Church.

He is preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother; Wife: Lisa M. (Stoltz) Rench of Arcanum whom he married April 17, 1982; Son: Justin G. Rench of Arcanum; Daughter: Karrie A. Rench of Arcanum; Brothers & sisters in law: David & Laura Rench of New Lebanon, Ohio, Jeff & Cindy Rench of Phillipsburg, Pastor Rollie & Terry Rench of Brookville; & numerous nieces, nephews, & cousins.

Ernest T. Leis, 95 of Ansonia, passed away Friday morning, April 9, 2010 at Heartland Nursing Home in Greenville.

He was born in York Township in Darke County, son of the late Lewis F. Leis and LaVonna (Landis) Leis. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a sisters, Ruth Campbell, Mary Sherry; and brothers, Edwin and Ralph Leis.

Ernie was a farmer for several years and was a member of the Ansonia First Church of God. He was a graduate of Ansonia High School class of 1932

He is survived by his wife, of 73 years Anna Gertrude (Campbell) Leis whom he married on May 27, 1936; children, James A. (Janet) Leis of Rossburg, Janet A. (Darrel) Rowland of Ansonia; granchildren Aliana (Bryan) Clymer of Greenville,Cindy (Steve) Shoop of Zambia, Africa, Scott (Andrea) Rowland of Ansonia; great grandchildren Holly Clymer, Brianne Clymer, Justin Rowland, Cody Rowland, Alexa Rowland, Andrew Rowland; a brother John L. Stephen L. McMaken (April 8, 2010)

Stephen L. McMaken, 63, of Greenville, passed away Thursday morning, April 8, 2010, at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

He was born in Piqua, son of Wilbur L. McMaken of Greenville and the late Betty J. (Byers) McMaken.

Stephen was a veteran of the US Air Force, having served during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the VFW in Greenville.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Crawford) McMaken; children, Troy C. McMaken and Tara M. McMaken-Timmons both of Nashville, TN; step-children, Jennifer Strong of Cleveland and Jessie Strong of Greenville; grandchildren, Lauren McMaken and Mary Timmons; a brother, Fred (Pat) McMaken of Greenville; and a sister, Charlene (fiance Tom Bowman) Pickerill of Centerburg, OH; and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Vickie Jo Rapier, age 66 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Saturday April 3, 2010 at 6:35 PM. She was born December 6, 1943 in Troy, Ohio the daughter of the late John L. & Ethel L. (Friend) Moreland. She was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Marvin Rapier; Son: Danny Lee Rapier.

She is survived by her sons & daughter in law: Cliff & Doris Rapier of Greenville, Tom Rapier of Greenville; Daughters & son in law: Kitty Henson of Greenville, Bonnie & Mike Wagner of Greenville; Grandchildren: Kailee, Jessie, Morgan, Milea, & Cody; Great Grandchildren: Ava, Kaleb; Sisters: Diana Smith of Greenville, Judy Sprouse of Texas.

James Matthew Renfro (April 2, 2010)

James Matthew “Matt” Renfro, age 61 of Hollansburg, Ohio, went to be with the Lord at 5:01 P.M. on Friday, April 2, 2010 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Matt was born on October 12, 1948 in Pineville, Kentucky. He was reared and attended School in Southeastern Kentucky. He graduated from Cumberland College and did graduate work at the University of Dayton.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents, James Pogue and Agnes Elizabeth (Amis) Renfro; and his in-laws, Ruby and Jim Tom Gray all of Flat Lick, Kentucky.

Matt is survived by his loving and totally devoted wife of 40 years, Verna Ann (Gray) Renfro; his son, James Thomas and his fiancée, Lacey Morris; his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Kay (Renfro) and Levi Bowling. Matt was also blessed to have a bonus brother, Lee Faulkner and his wife, Barbara and special friends, Sam and Debbie Shilot. Matt’s cousin Wilkerson Renfro and his family and many other cousins and friends in Kentucky mourn his passing.

Matt has been a prominent figure in Darke County for the past 40 years. He was a History Teacher and Basketball Coach at Tri-Village High School for 35 and 32 years respectively. He touched countless lives with his homegrown Philosophies, his Christian example and his teaching.

Matt loved Tri-Village High School and every aspect of his connection with students, parents and staff. He was an Elder in the Triumphant Christian Center Church, a member of the New Madison Kiwanis Club and a member of the Ohio Athletic Association. One of his great joys was his recent induction into the Tri-Village Sports Hall of Fame. The family wishes to thank the selection committee, Principal Bill Moore and Superintendant Tony Thomas for this honor.

Matt loved his family and was especially proud of his son, Tommy who is also a Teacher and Coach at Tri-Village High School. Tommy also has a Christian Music Ministry that Matt was involved with even singing with Tommy on one of his CD’s.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 12:00 P.M. at Triumphant Christian Center, 1129 South Town Court, Greenville, Ohio, with Rev. Sam Shilot officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville and Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at the church. Interment will be in Barbourville City Cemetery, Barbourville, Kentucky. Carl “Junior” Hindsley, 75, of Greenville, formerly of New Madison, passed away on April 4, 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton. Junior was born on August 17, 1934 to the late Carl and Gladys (Burns) Hindsley.
Junior worked at Fram/Honeywell in Greenville for 37 years in manufacturing. He is a 1952 graduate of New Madison Schools, a member of the American Legion Lodge #158, Am vets and a lifetime member of the Eagles Lodge. Junior loved to go to the Eagles Lodge for breakfast and lunch, watch the Cincinnati Reds play on T.V. and play cards with the guys on Friday nights.

In addition to his parents, Junior was preceded in death by a son Stephen.

He is survived by a son, Terry Joe Hindsley of Celina; a special friend, Julie Macintosh of Greenville and a number of friends and neighbors who will sadly miss him.

Irene D. Hart (April 2, 2010)

Irene D. (Schneider) Hart, 83, of Greenville, passed away on April 2, 2010 at Rest Haven Nursing Home. Irene was born on December 18, 1926 in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Martin & Dorothy (Kraushaar) Schneider.
 
Irene worked for Pennsylvania Bell in the office and as a cook for the Tri Village Schools, but continued to have a full time job as a homemaker, mother and farmer’s wife. She was a member of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Ithaca, where she was very active as a Sunday school teacher, choir member,women's ministry, and church council. Her life revolved around church. Irene was also active in the Church Woman United, Extension Homemakers, 4-H, and Tri-Village Band Boosters. She loved working in her gardens. She was also a member of the Eastern Star in Pennsylvania.

In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Willard in 1994 and a special friend, Leonard Norris.


She is survived by two sons, Rex and Anita Hart of Greenville and Frank and Lisa Hart of Arcanum; two daughters, Cheryl Ann and Charles Forrest of Anchorage, Alaska and Jayne and Lee Klett of Woodville, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Nicholas and Kias Hart, Aimee, Seth, and Elizabeth Hart, Amber, and Jordon Hart, Chris Klett; two great-grandchildren, Alyna and Madisyn Nelson; a brother, Martin and Harriet Schneider of Seneca, South Carolina and a sister, Mildred Hoke of Advance, North Carolina.


Services entrusted to Storch Braund Funeral Home in New Madison, Ohio. A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at the funeral home. The celebration of life funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Ithaca with Pastor Joene Herr being asked to officiate. Burial will follow in the Royal Oak Cemetery, Brookville, Ohio. Irene requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the St. Matthew Lutheran Church or Heifer International with donations being accepted at the funeral home. Marie D. Snell (March 31, 2010)

Marie D. Snell, 93, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 9:15 PM at the Cottages of Clayton, Dayton, Ohio. She was born on June 20, 1916 in Nora, Kentucky, to the late John R. & Nannie “Williams” Davis.

Marie and her husband Elmer were the owner and operators of Snells Restaurant for 13 years. She also worked part time at Fourmans in Greenville and was the owner and operator of Maple Apartments in Greenville. Marie also helped out in the Funnel Cake booths at the Darke County Fair.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville and was a world traveler.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Snell whom she married on December 18, 1937; sisters, Neva Davis, Maude Woollum, Margie Neftzer, Gladys Sheffield and Roxie Brown; nephew, Lyle Sheffield; and niece, Jean McKinley.

She is survived by her nieces, Jo Ann & Tim Greene of Hillsboro, Ohio, Elizabeth & Tom Bennett of Ohio, and Alice Neftzer of Ohio; nephews, Wayne & Delores Sheffield of Pennsylvania, Lowell Hoy of Iowa, Marion & Norma Jean Woollum Jr. of Kentucky, and Larry Woollum of Kentucky; special friend, Ronda Boone of Greenville, Ohio; as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.

There will be a service held on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville with Rev. Dr. John Person officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbottsville Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be given to the First Presbyterian Church.

I. Bonita Shellabarger (March 31, 2010)

Mrs. I. Bonita Shellabarger, age 95 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Wednesday March 31, 2010 at 10:45 AM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. She was born March 7, 1915 in Portland, Indiana the daughter of the late Jesse & Della E. (Arnett) Parsons.

She worked for the Brethren Retirement Community for 11 years in the Nursing Department, and she was a member of Castine Church of the Brethren,

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Byron A. Shellabarger on December 12, 1997; Brothers: Francis & Leonard Parsons; Sister: Kathleen Deaton; ½ Brothers: Arnett Bickel, & Harold Parsons.

She is survived by her sons & daughters in law: Marion & Sylvia Shellabarger of Piqua, & Don & Marlyn Shellabarger of Brookville, Ohio; Daughter & son in law: LeAnn & David Nimphie of Branson, Missouri; 10 Grandchildren; 26 Great grandchildren; 2 Great great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Monday April 5, 2010 at 1:30 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Ryan Shellabarger & Pastor Bob Bitner officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Sunday April 4, 2010 and 1 hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home. N. Edward Leeper (April 4, 2010)

N. Edward Leeper, 81, of Rossburg, passed away Sunday morning, April 4, 2010 at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville.

He was born in Darke County, son of the late Harry Albert and Mabel Christine (Fischbach) Leeper. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Donald; brothers, Percy Albert, Marvin "Dale" and Minor Eugene Leeper; and sisters, Twila Bell and Carolyn "Ann" Spahr.

A farmer, Ed had also ran a milk transport business for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, N. Jean (Emig) Leeper; children, Douglas of Georgia, David of Rossburg, Dennis (Karlynn) of Rossburg, Diane (Tom) Jenkins of Greenville, Dane (Linda) of Ansonia, Darin of Rossburg, Darrell (Cheryl) of Georgia, Darwin (Valerie) of Rossburg, Dwane of Rossburg, Doreen (Chris) Culy of Winchester, IN, and Dwight (Kim) of Rossburg; daughter-in-law, Kathy Leeper of Rossburg; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and two sisters, Barbara June Klenke of Cincinnati and Janet Ellen Shiverdecker of Greenville.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, April 9 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 5-8 p.m.

Neal V. Miller (April 1, 2010)

Neal V. Miller, 56, of Greenville, died April 1, 2010, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.

He was born April 16, 1953, in Richmond, Indiana, the son of Lowell and Janis (Haworth) Miller of Greenville.

Neal graduated from Tri-Village High School in 1973. He was employed by the Union City Body Company/Workhorse as an inspector for 36 years, retiring in 2009.

He is survived by his parents, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Greenville Township Rescue.

Emma O'Brien (March 31, 2010)

Emma O'Brien, 91, of Greenville, died Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at Heartland of Greenville where she had resided since October of 2009. Mrs. O'Brien was born in Twin Township, Darke County on July 3, 1918, the daughter of the late Ezra and Pearl (Brown) Wright. Mrs. O'Brien and her late husband Edward J. O'Brien were Sharpeye area farmers. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Greenville. Emma was preceded in death by her husband and her daughters Donna Karnehm and Betty Clayton, grandson Richard Karnehm, brothers Jonas and Roy Wright, and sister Ivy Edwards. She is survived by Grandchildren Carolyn Worthen and husband Bill of Michigan, Connie Singer and husband Ryan, Tom Karnehm, John Karnehm, and Tammy Mallonee and husband Kevin all of Greenville; and 8 Great Grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM on Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Kreitzer Funeral Home, Arcanum, with Pastor Ron Isom officiating. Burial will follow in Abbottsville Cemetery.
