Edith E. Prether, 85 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 7:55 AM on Friday January 8, 2016 at the Brethren Retirement Community after an extended illness. Mrs. Prether was born December 11, 1930 in Darke County, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late William and Alma (Hoover) Curtner.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and David Wiltshire of Plymouth, Michigan, son and daughter-in-law Terry Prether and Kristin Stred of Kirkland, Washington. Also surviving are her brothers William Curtner and Lloyd Curtner, both of Greenville, sister-in-law Pauline Curtner of Arcanum. Brother-in-law Ralph Fasick of Greenville, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Lucy Prether of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Brooke and Tyler Conn, Matt and Ellie Prether, Mark and Teresa Wiltshire, Eric and Malina Wiltshire, Lara and Nathan Ray, and Katie Davis. Her great grandchildren are: Eli and Madelyn Conn, Brennen, William, and Lily Wiltshire, and Chloe Ray.
She will be missed by many dear friends, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Prether was preceded in death by her devoted husband of nearly 64 years, Charles L. Prether, brother Denver Curtner, sisters Dorothy Fasick and Wanda Campbell, brothers-in-law James Campbell and Bob Mikesell and sisters-in-law Ruth Curtner and Juanita Mikesell.
During her life, Mrs. Prether was devoted to those she loved and cared for. For many years, Mrs. Prether managed the gift shop at the Brethren Retirement Community (BRC) and after retiring continued to volunteer there in many capacities. She derived much pleasure in helping others. Throughout her life, Mrs. Prether enjoyed many different part-time positions as well as being a devoted homemaker. She worked at the New Madison Bonfiglio Pharmacy, at Sink Jewelers in Arcanum, at Downing Fruit Farms, Hollansburg, at Flag Lumber in New Madison, and for a short time had and upholstery business with a friend. Wherever she was employed she loved interacting with people. She was an active member of Beech Grove Church of the Brethren. When her children were school age, she was a 4-H advisor assisting children with a variety of projects.
A private graveside service will be held at the discretion of the family. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday January 16, 2016 at the Brethren Retirement Community Chapel 750 Chestnut Street, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Todd Reish officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday January 16, 2016 from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM at the Brethren Retirement Community Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brethren Retirement Community Resident’s Aid Fund.
