Norbert V. Schlater (October 26, 2014)

Norbert V. Schlater, age 86, of Versailles, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 5:48 AM at Versailles Health Care Center, Versailles, Ohio. He was born on Feb. 17, 1928 in Ft. Loramie, Ohio, to the late Fred & Bernadine (Albers) Schlater.

Norbert is survived by his sons and daughters in law, Ronald & Diana Schlater of St. Paris, Ohio, Roger & Shirley Schlater of Versailles, Ohio, David & Mary Jo Schlater of St. Henry, Ohio, Stan & Rita Schlater of Versailles, Ohio, Mike & Jayne Schlater of St. Mary’s, Ohio, Mark & Shirley Schlater of St. Paris, Ohio, Denis & Gerri Schlater of Coldwater, Ohio, and Dale & Kathy Schlater of Versailles, Ohio; daughters and sons in law, Karen & Jeff Keiser of Troy, Ohio, Vicky & Stan Nuding of Celina, Ohio, Jane & James Puckett of Urbana, Ohio, and Lois & David Bruns of Versailles, Ohio; 38 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren; brother and sister in law, Elmer & Carol Schlater of Sidney, Ohio; sisters and brother in law, Delores Peltier of Russia, Ohio, Velma & Jiggs Thobe of Maria Stein, Ohio, and Marlene Crusey of Sidney, Ohio; sisters in law, Norma Schlater of Ft. Loramie, Ohio, and Martha (Cy) Thobe of Chickasaw, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Vera (Schulze) Schlater whom he married on May 4, 1949; great granddaughter, Taylor Griesdorn; brothers, Herbert, Al, Vernon and Urban Schlater; sister Alma Schlater; brothers in law, Joseph Crusey and Robert Peltier; and sisters in law, Lucille Schlater and Nettie Schlater.

Norbert retired from Baumfolder as a machinist before working at the Stillwater Valley Golf Course in Versailles for 17 years. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church, Minster Eagles and New Bremen Senior Citizens. He enjoyed playing baseball in the Western Ohio League for many years, golfing and watching his grandchildren play their sporting events. He loved fishing, playing euchre and was an avid Reds fan.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at 10:30 AM at St. Denis Catholic Church, Versailles, Ohio, with Rev. Fr. Jim Simons celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Martins Catholic Church Cemetery, Osgood, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from 2-8 PM at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home, Versailles, Ohio, as well as on Thursday from 9-10 AM at the funeral home. It is the wishes of the family that memorial contributions are given to the Diamond Club or Versailles Emergency Medical Services.
