Kenneth E. Haines, age 89, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 12:30 AM at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio. Kenneth Edward was born on September 11, 1926 outside of Greenville, Ohio, to Herbert & Mamie (Stephens) Haines.
On November 16, 1946, he wed (Zelda) Lucille Delk. Sharing 53 years of married life, she preceded him in death November 28, 1999.
Kenneth (Ken) graduated watch making school in Cincinnati, Ohio, after his WWII Army service. This training provided him with the technical skills required for his career in precision instrumentation. He later retired from the Sheffield (Bendix) corporation of Dayton, Ohio.
Some of his favorite past times included watch and clock repair, designing and re-creating historic replicas of tin lighting fixtures as well as blacksmithing and wood working. He proudly leaves his creative mark throughout Darke County in the form of the copper City of Greenville Bicentennial time capsule housed in the Greenville City Hall, hand wrought hardware used in many historic buildings and residences, the copper cross top Arcanum’s Trinity United Methodist Church and beautiful liturgical furniture in the Brethren Retirement Community.
Kenneth loved God and was quick with a friendly smile. He was active in the Darke County church community from his boyhood years at West Zion Church to Caylor Chapel (Evangelical United Brethren) of Van Buren township and both Faith and Trinity United Methodist churches in Arcanum. Following in the footsteps of his father, he assumed active leadership roles on the countless boards and committees in addition to sharing Jesus’ message as an inspirational teacher and mentor. In his later years, he devoted to his Bible studies. Sharing his insight into these studies, he reflected “every time I read it, I discover something about myself”.

Robert D. Roll (July 15, 2016)
Robert D. Roll, “Bob”, 87 years old, died July 15, 2016, in the compassionate and excellent care of Burke Hospice and Palliative Care following a period of months in declining health. Until very recently he had been living in Greensboro, NC since July of 1977. He was born on December 21, 1928 and reared in Greenville, OH, the only child of J. C. and Pauline (Poling) Roll. A 1946 graduate of Greenville High School, he furthered his education by several years of study at the Dayton Art Institute before beginning his career as a commercial artist and photographer. For many years he operated his advertising business, Graphic Studios, in Greenville, OH.
While engaged in his business, Mr. Roll had a notably successful amateur golf career. His lifelong interest in golf was sparked when his father, Jake Roll, donated some of the farm land adjacent to his home on Hwy 571, joining with others who were interested in developing what became White Springs Golf Course. Bob took advantage of the proximity of White Springs to hone his golf skills, soon becoming a formidable contender in the local and regional golf contests. Bob won his first of 11 city tournaments when he was 17 years old. The next year he won his first of nearly 20 club championships at Greenville Country Club, White Springs Golf Course, and Forest Oaks Country Club. Most memorably, he was a finalist in 1954 of the Ohio Amateur Golf Tournament losing the state title to Arnold Palmer. He was further honored with invitations to play exhibition rounds with famous golf figures Lee Kirkwood, Dutch Harrison, and Arnold Palmer with Joe Campbell. Bob’s tournament wins over the next years were too numerous to list, but his final achievement before moving to North Carolina was to win the Ohio Pre-Seniors State Championship in 1974.
His most recent golf feats were to “beat his age” over 150 times in the last few years and to be featured in May 2016 in GolfWeek Magazine’s annual “Local Legends” issue. Bob was placed on that issue’s cover seated at his drafting table in front of the many famous golfers’ portraits that he had painted and combined into montages. Bob was given many talents and whatever task he put his capable hands to, he pursued with complete focus, intelligence, imagination, and perseverance. Perfection was his goal and standard, but it was leavened my modesty, with, and a well-developed sense of humor.
He was predeceased in 2000 by his life-long love and beloved wife of 50 years, Shirley Wood Roll, both of the Greenville High School class of 1946, having met in elementary school. Additionally, he was predeceased by his parents, Jake and Polly Roll, Shirley’s parents, Alfred Middlebrook Wood and Maude Clark Wood, Shirley’s brothers, James A. Wood of Kettering, OH and Donald Wood of Okinawa, Japan, and first cousin, Judy Sluterbeck Shahan of New York state. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Roll Phifer, son-in-law, Edward W. Phifer, III and grandson Justin McLear of Morganton, NC. Also surviving, nephew David Wood and his wife family, many Roll and Poling first cousins and their families, too numerous to list, but no less dear to his heart. He was especially grateful to cousins Linda Wolford Snider and husband Larry and Family of Greenville; Jan Sluterbeck Rust, Troy; and Darlene Poling Brewsaugh and Don and family, Greensburg, Indiana, who gave care, company, and love to his mother in her later years.
A graveside service is planned at Abbottsville Cemetery in Darke County, OH on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 1:00 p.m conduct by Pastor Angela Meeks.
The family humbly requests that any memorials of Mr. Roll be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, a501(c)(3) nonprofit, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, NC 28690, in lieu of flowers, in recognition of their care which was so very professionally and lovingly given.
Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center in Morganton, NC and Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville, OH are assisting the family with the arrangements.

He attended Ashland University and Wright State University. He was active with Darke Countians for Wildlife Conservation, and Fur, Fish and Game 4-H Club for many years. He donated many hand-made items to Pheasants Forever and to his friends. He was a brave, resilient man evidenced many times over. He saved a stranger’s life by running into a burning building, and carrying him out to safety. He survived a horrible car wreck in Greenville, and a boat wreck in Canada, where the boat sunk, and took eight hours to be found. He lost his leg in 2008, due to an arterial blood clot. He cared for his wife and mother as they battled cancer. He worked on many dangerous projects, and removed many unwanted animals from places they did not belong. He was a generous man. In addition to his time, money, and hand-made items, he donated over ten gallons of blood. People looked forward to him bringing them his delicious fudge that he learned to make from his mother.
Rex enjoyed hunting, camping, trapping, wildlife, nature, and photography. He frequently went looking for artifacts on land and in rivers. He especially enjoyed Peace River in Florida. He participated in many hawk and knife competitions along with pre 1840’s reenactments. He was a true outdoorsman. He was artistic and made gorgeous items that included: leather pouches, knife handles, and coat racks made from deer antlers. He collected Native American memorabilia. From the age of 16, he spent a significant amount of time in Chapleau, Canada, making it a second home. He spent many evenings watching his grandkids play sports and enjoyed having stimulating conversations with friends and strangers. He had a strong personality that made him memorable to everyone he met. He was a good friend, and had good friends in return. His beautiful blue eyes will be greatly missed.
