Lois “Maxine” (Engle) Heise died on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Messiah Village, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Maxine was born December 23, 1925, near Abilene, Kansas, daughter of the late Earl and Minnie Engle.
She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at age 9. As a teenager, she was baptized and joined the Brethren in Christ church.
She graduated from Dickinson County High School, Chapman, Kansas, in 1943. Following high school, she taught in a one-room country school for two years. She attended Messiah College in Pennsylvania and Beulah College in California. She was a registered nurse, having graduated from Wesley Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas.
Maxine married Alvin Heise on September 3, 1950. After Alvin finished medical school, they served at the Brethren in Christ Navajo Mission in New Mexico from January 1956 to July 1959. From there they moved to New Madison, OH, where they raised their five children and Alvin was in medical practice. After Alvin’s death, Maxine moved to the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville in October 1991, where she enjoyed living during her retirement years. In May 2012 she moved to Messiah Village in Mechanicsburg, PA to be closer to family.
Her children remember Maxine as a gentle and loving mother, with an optimistic outlook. We are grateful for her prayers for us throughout her life, and believe she made the best apple pie ever! She enjoyed tending the flowerbeds around her home, watching Jeopardy and playing Scrabble.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Alvin L. Heise, on March 31, 1991; and by her sister Kathryn Engle and brother Earl Engle, Jr.
Survivors include her children, Glen (Wanda) Heise, Harrisburg, PA; Lois (Daryl) Climenhaga, Steinbach, Manitoba; Carol Heise (Charles Romero), Albuquerque, NM; Mark (Melissa) Heise, Pottstown, PA; and Janet (Chad) Green, Carlsbad, CA; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Mahlon (Irene) Engle, Abilene, KS; a sister Doris Mason, Wichita, KS; and sister-in-law Esther Engle, Colorado City, CO. Locally, she is survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jesse and Fern Heise, Pitsburg.
