John Elwood Burns age 77 of Greenville died at 9:10 A.M. on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Versailles Health Care Center. John was born September 23, 1931 in Frederick County, Maryland, to the late Joseph Burns & Mary Catherine (Eiler) Roper.
John served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1960. He retired from Sprint Telephone Company in Greenville with 29 years of service. John graduated from Piqua High School in 1950. He attended Parks College (part of the University of St. Louis). John was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Greenville. He was also a member of the Greenville Masonic Lodge No. 143 F & AM; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton; and the Greenville Lions Club.
In addition to his parents, John is also preceded in death by a son, Matthew John Burns; and a sister, Margaret Ruth (Burns) Wale.
John is survived by his wife, Florene L. (Bowser) Burns; son, Mark Anthony Burns of Greenville; daughter, Heather Renee Weaver of Greenville; grandchildren, Anastacia Marie Reier, Octavia Nicole Reier, Kara Renee Reier, and James Dale Weaver.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville, with President Phil Garbig presiding. Burial will follow in Miami Memorial Park in Covington. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted by the Greenville Masonic Lodge No. 143 F &AM on Tuesday at 10:45 A.M. at the funeral home.
