Russell M. Turner (July 10, 2011)

Russell M. Turner, 83, of Coldwater, OH, passed away late Sunday afternoon, July 10, 2011 at Heartland of Greenville.

He was born October 19, 1927 in Allen Township, Darke County, son of the late Balinger Berlin and Grace Ethel (Gray) Turner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, R. Wayne Turner; sisters, Anna Mary (Lloyd) Taylor, Ruth (Ralph) Schaar, Alice (Harold) Wentworth, Alta (Carroll) Peters and Mildred (Steve) Hocker: and brother-in-laws, Palmer Boyd, Dale Wentworth, Harold Rammel, Jim Gilmore, Buryl Wehrley.

Russell was retired from New Idea in Coldwater where he had worked for over 39 years. He was a veteran of the US Army having served at the end of WWII. He was a member of the Rossburg United Methodist Church and the Coldwater American Legion.

He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Boyd, Virginia Gilmore, June Wentworth and Norma Rammel; brothers, Junior (Phyllis) Turner, and Robert (Nadine) Turner; sister-in-law, Janet Turner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will Be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14 at the Oliver -Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with Pastor John Monroe officiating. Burial will follow in the Brock Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Rossburg United Methodist Church.

Treva I. Brenner (July 11, 2011)

Treva I. Brenner, age 91 a resident of Rest Haven Nursing Home, passed away on Monday July 11, 2011 at 3:25 AM at Rest Haven. She was born October 26, 1919 in Greenville, Ohio the daughter of the late Frank & Emma (Brewer) Shepherd. She was a homemaker and a member of Stelvideo Christian Church. She graduated from Gettysburg School in 1939.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Lowell Brenner whom she married November 21, 1941; infant brother: John Shepherd; sister: Goldie Brewer.

She is survived by her children and spouses: Lanny & Martha Brenner of Greenville, Randy & Annette Brenner of Greenville, Tamai & Craig Fenstermaker of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday July 14, 2011 at 10:30 AM at Stelvideo Christian Church 6808 Church Street, Stelvideo, Ohio with Rev. Joe Soley and Pastor Vernon Rodeffer officiating. Burial will follow in Stelvideo Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday July 13, 2011 at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio. William R. Custenborder (July 6, 2011)

William R. Custenborder age 82 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 10:18 P.M. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. William was born December 30, 1928 in Sidney, Ohio, to the late L. Raymond & Fanny (Carey) Custenborder.

William graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1946, then served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Lewis, Washington from 1951-1953 as a Personnel Management Specialist. Mr. Custenborder married Frances Jean Bouquot on July 18, 1953. She passed away on January 20, 1967.

Mr. Custenborder is survived by his wife, Catherine Ratermann whom he married on March 23, 1968; three children, Douglas (and Dotty) Custenborder of Greenville, Carol (and Gary) Kunze of Kettering and Patrick (and Kim) Custenborder of Versailles. He also was the proud grandparent of seven grandchildren, Clint Howell, Ryan (and Brittany) Kunze, Mitch Custenborder, Cheryl (and Jeff) Probst, Brad Kunze, Connor Custenborder and Kelsey Custenborder. Mr. Custenborder is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Custenborder was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Custenborder; and two sisters, RuthEllen Sellers and Rosemary Blake.

Mr. Custenborder worked at the Citizens National Bank in Sidney for 17 years, the last 10 years as Vice President and Manager of the Russia Branch. For the next 23 years, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Versailles Savings and Loan Co., retiring in 1992 as President, and continuing as Chairman of the Board. During his lifetime, Mr. Custenborder served on many Boards and Organizations, including Sidney Jaycees; Finance Officer with the American Legion; Russia Civic Association; Versailles Development Association; Versailles Swimming Pool Board; Worch Memorial Public Library Board of Trustees; Board of Trustees of the Ohio Savings and Loan League; Versailles Area Foundation Fund and Versailles Lions Club. He was a long time lector at St. Denis Catholic Church and a member of the Senior Servers. Bill and Bud Sutter started a weekly men’s prayer group 11 years ago which has continued to this day.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles with Rev. Fr. David Vincent celebrant. Burial will follow at 1:30 P.M. in Graceland Cemetery in Sidney. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. and Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:00 A.M. at Bailey Zechar Funeral Home in Versailles. Military Honors will be conducted by the Versailles Veterans Honor Guard at 10:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home. B. Catherine Sharp age 95 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 5:55 A.M. on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Dayton Heart & Vascular Hospital at Good Samaritan in Dayton. Catherine was born January 9, 1916 in Adams Township, Darke County, to the late William & Mae (Routzong) Michael.

Catherine was retired. She was a active member of the First United Methodist Church in Greenville; United Methodist Women’s Organization; Past President and life member of the Greenville V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Post #7262; and a former member of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, Catherine is also preceded in death by her brothers, Lowell Michael, Dale Michael, Joyce Michael and William Michael Jr.; and sisters, Mabel Shaffer and Ruth Rhoades.

Catherine is survived by her husband of 75 years, R. Eugene Sharp, whom she married July 3, 1936; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church 202 West Fourth Street Greenville, with Rev. Joe Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Greenville Cemetery (new section). Mildred Catherine “Katie” McKibben (July 4, 2011)

Mildred Catherine “Katie” McKibben age 92 of Greenville, Ohio, passed away at 6:42 P.M. on Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Sterling House in Greenville. Katie was born July 16, 1918 in Yorkshire, Ohio, to the late Harrison & Clara (Fritz) Johnston.

Katie was a homemaker. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington.

In addition to her parents, Katie is also preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. McKibben on July 26, 1983 whom she married October 5, 1940; daughter, Debra E. McKibben; brothers, Otis, Bob & Ralph Johnston; and sister, Sally Hartle.

Katie is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, Bill & Betty McKibben of Covington and Charles E. & Connie McKibben of Bradford; daughter & son-in-law, Cathy & Tim Palmer of Greenville; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; brother, Tom Johnston of Piqua; and sisters, Rosetta Grise of Piqua and Treva Meiring of Piqua.

Edna Marie Rhodehamel (July 1, 2011)

Edna Marie Rhodehamel, 88, of Greenville, formerly of Arcanum, died Friday, July 1, 2011 at The Brethren Retirement Community. Mrs. Rhodehamel has been a resident of the Brethren Retirement Community since September 2000. She was born in Bradford on February 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Harley and Bertha (Yoder) Hoover. She was a member the former Ithaca United Methodist Church, where she was very active in the United Methodist Women and other church functions. She is currently a member Trinity United Methodist Church, Arcanum. Edna was a former Librarian and Teacher at Arcanum Butler and Greenville City School Systems retiring July 1, 1988. Edna was a former member of the GEA, OEA, and NEA. She was member of the Darke County Center for the Arts. She was preceded in death by her husband Doyle E. Rhodehamel, who died October 6, 1982, Sister Mary Zirkle and Brother Galen Hoover. John L. Durr (July 1, 2011)

John L. Durr, 88, of Greenville, passed away early Friday morning, July 1, 2011 at Heartland of Greenville.

He was born April 21, 1923 in Darke County, son of the late Roy C. and Wilma B. (Ashman) Durr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; and a brother, Thomas Durr.

John was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps having served in WWII where he was an ex prisoner of war and had received the Purple Heart. He was retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base where he had worked for 35 years as a statistician. He was a member of the D.A.V., American Legion and V.F.W.

He is survived by his second wife, Mary Frances (Coppess) Spencer-Durr; two daughters, Linda L. Sheline, and Dianna L. Durr; a step daughter, Linda O'Grady; 2 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; and 8 step great grandchildren.

A memorial service with full military honors by the Greenville Veterans Honor Guard will be held at 11 a.m on Friday, July 8 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with the Chaplain Sam Hoeflich officiating. Private burial will take place in the Nashville Cemetery near West Milton.

The family will receive friends on Friday one hour prior to services at the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Heartland Hospice.

Rhys A. Bowman (June 29, 2011)

Rhys A. Bowman, age 55 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 5:26 P.M. Wednesday June 29, 2011 at Miami Valley Hospital Dayton, Ohio. He was born August 16, 1955 in Piqua, Ohio and the son of the late Roscoe Bowman & the late June E. (Bowman) Sodders.

Rhys was a loyal and faithful employee for Buchy Food Service for the past 32 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge all of Greenville. Rhys enjoyed golf, the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Browns, Dayton Flyers and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Rhys is survived by his wife Pamela L. (Mathews) Bowman of Greenville. They were married May 31, 1980. Also by his daughters Amanda Lee Bowman at home, Natalie Anne Bowman also at home and her fiancé Tyler Hinkle of Greenville. Brothers and sisters in law Randall & Rhonda Bowman and Regan & Sue Bowman all of Greenville. Nieces and Nephews Julie (Jason) Willis, Tiffany (Jeremy) Fine, Heather (Lance) Riegle, Heidi (Tate) Sutton, Brett, Holli & Haley Bowman. His mother in law Joan Mathews, sisters in law Rose Mathews, Liz (Dirk) Lewis and Charity (Tom) Kinnison. Nieces and nephews in law Kristi Anderson, Bridgit & (Steve) Kerber, Curtis Dysinger, Kayla Kinnison, Leah & Ripley Lewis.

Rhys will be deeply missed by all of his many friends and customers.

Mrs. Hamilton was born in Darke County on June 10, 1922, the daughter of the late Alonzo and Elnora (Wetzel) Fourman. She was a Homemaker and a Farmers Wife. Mrs. Hamilton was a life time member of the former Wayne Trail Grange. Evelyn was preceded in death by an infant Sister. Mrs. Hamilton is survived by her husband Keith Hamilton, whom she married October 19, 1946; Niece Denise Hansbarger and husband Alan of Arcanum; Nephew Steven Larsh of Arcanum; Great Nephew Gregory Hansbarger and wife Kathy; and Great Great Nephews John and Mark Hansbarger. Carroll A. Seman, age 69 of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 3:35 P.M. Tuesday June 28, 2011 in the emergency room of Wayne Health Care Center. Carroll was born December 26, 1941 in Gettysburg, Ohio and the daughter of the late Raymer L. & Viola E. (Miller) Seman.

Carroll is survived by several cousins.

Shirley D. Poeppelman age 85 of Versailles, Ohio, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2011 at the Sterling House in Greenville. Shirley was born July 16, 1925 in Syracuse, New York, to the late Winfield W. & Hazel A. (Goldie) Dodd.

Shirley was retired from Travelers Insurance Company; where she had been an office manager for 40 years. Shirley was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church in Versailles.

In addition to her parents, Shirley is also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence F. Poeppelman on March 17, 2009 whom she married June 18, 1994; son, Gordon A. Root; grandson, Brett Root; and step granddaughters, Sydney Poeppelman and Brittany Kimmel.

Mrs. Eileen (Troxell) Rehmert, age 86 of Blakeslee, Ohio and formerly of Greenville, Ohio, passed away on Friday June 24, 2011 at 11:45 PM at Bryan Care & Rehabilitation Center, Bryan, Ohio. She was born November 9, 1924 in Piermont, Ohio the daughter of the late Robert Porterfield & Ruby Irene (Christ) Troxell. She was a homemaker most of her life and worked for ARO in Bryan, Ohio.

She was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Greenville, Ohio. She collected Indian vases, art and crafts.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Ambert C. Rehmert; Brother: Robert Troxell II.

She is survived by her sons: Terry L. Rehmert of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Barry W. Rehmert of Blakeslee, Ohio; 2 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sister: Helen Juanita Brock of Brookville, Ohio.

Services will be held on Tuesday June 28, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Dale Boeger officiating. Reverend Thomas Miller Davis (June 24th, 2011)

Reverend Thomas Miller Davis, 83, went to be with our Lord Friday morning June 24th, 2011 at his home.

He was born on February 27th, 1928 in Williamsburg, KY, son of the late Thomas Millard Davis and Effie Marie (Towe) Davis.

Rev. Davis has faithfully served his Lord and his community since April of 1973. Serving as Pastor at Churches of the Nazarene in Saylor Park, OH, Ripley, OH and Greenville, OH where he retired in June of 1997. Following his retirement he began to serve as interim Pastor at various churches where he was needed, most recently serving as Pastor for the past two years in Union City, IN.

Rev. Davis also has 39 years working for various newspapers, including the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Ripley Bee. He also enjoyed working with the youth of Brown County through the 4-H program, where he served for 9 years. Rev. Davis also served his country as a member of the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers Carl, Arthur and Clarence (Red) Keith.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Lou (Nace); two sons, Doug (Tami) of Ripley, OH; and Lonnie of Miamiville, OH. Four daughters, Denise Davis of Owensville, OH; Monica (Tom) Rosselot of Owensville, OH; Dana Davis of Seattle, WA; and Cindy (Shane) Palmer of Chilhowie, VA. Grandchildren, Kelly (Darole) Reese, Micah (Jason) Shircliff, Makayla, Faith and Rebecca Palmer, Bailey Joy and Colton Davis. Great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, MaKenzie and Bryce Reese, Adison and Aubrey Shircliff.

Services will be held on Monday, June 27th at 3:00 p.m. at the Greenville Church of the Nazarene, Greenville, OH with Rev. D. Geoffrey Kunselman and Rev. Wayne Thomas officiating. Burial will follow on Tuesday, June 28th at 1:00 p.m. in the Sugar Tree Ridge Cemetery, Hillsboro, OH. The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Monday at the Greenville Church of the Nazarene. Arrangements are being handled by Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio.

Charlotte Catherine (Hinegardner) Harter, age 100 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Saturday June 25, 2011 at 6:10 AM at the Brethren Retirement Community. She was born November 26, 1910 in Greenville, Ohio the daughter of the late Solomon David & Roseanna (Kaufman) Hinegardner. She worked at General Athletic & Second National Bank retiring in 1965. She was a member of Greenville Missionary Church and a graduate of Marion College now known as Indiana Wesleyan University.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Addison Harter; Step daughters: Irene Fields, Margaret Seeley; Sister: Lois Aeschbach.

She is survived by her step granddaughters: Helen Arnett of Troy, Karen & Glenn Wilson of Bradford, Beverly Rose of Orlando, Florida; step great granddaughter: Shawna Arnett of Troy.

Lowell R. McClurg (June 23, 2011)

Lowell R. McClurg, 71, of Greenville, Ohio passed away early Thursday afternoon, June 23, 2011 at his residence.

He was born on February 12, 1940, in Greenville, Ohio to the late Ralph and Jean (Hipshire) McClurg. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a stepson John Louk.

Lowell was retired from restaurant service having worked an numerous restaurant including the former Wills Restaurant in Greenville. An avid and loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds, he was a member of the Jehovah's Witness. He was a 1959 graduate of Greenville High School.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta (Murphy) McClurg, whom he married April 7, 1991; step children, Harley Louk of New Carlisle, Cecil Louk, Christopher Louk, Robert Gray, Sandra Gray, Kathy Gray, and Rhonda Weese all of Greenville; 15 step grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren; an aunt, Nancy Rush; an uncle, Bud Hipshire; and numerous cousins.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 28 at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will follow in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, from 5-8 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be given to either the Cancer Association of Darke County or State of the Heart Hospice.

Betty J. Garrett (June 21, 2011)

Betty J. Garrett, age 83 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Tuesday June 21, 2011 at 11:40 AM at Heartland of Greenville. She was born November 16, 1927 in Greenville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Howard & Koneta (Sanders) Patton. She was a legal secretary for prosecuting attorneys Tom Hanes & Lee Fry.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Husband: James D. Garrett on October 24, 1998.

She is survived by her children: Jack Garrett of Greenville, Jeanne Higgins of Greenville, Susie Garrett of Greenville; Grandchildren: Amy (Lee) Obringer, Erin (Scott) Kies; Great Grandchildren: Jensen, Daphne, McKenna, Austin, Isabella, Ayden; Brothers & sisters in law: Howard Patton Jr. of Fairborn, Larry Patton of Denver, Colorado, James Patton of Dayton; Sisters: Jane Henby of Greenville, Carol Herring of The Villages, Florida.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 25, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Sean Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Greenville Cemetery at a later date. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to Greenville Twp. Samuel David Mikesell (June 20, 2011)

Samuel David Mikesell, age 63 of New Madison, Ohio, passed away on Monday June 20, 2011 at 9:35 AM at his residence. He was born February 20, 1948 in the family home on Harrison Road, New Madison, Ohio the son of the late Lewis Ellsworth “Dynamite” & Irma Irene (Spencer) Mikesell. He worked for Shellar Globe in Union City for 25 years and also for Transilwrap in Richmond, Indiana. He loved to fish, gardening, and hunting and loved nature.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Brothers: Bradley, Harvey Lloyd, Larry, and Joe Mikesell.

Mabel L. Clark (June 18, 2011)

Mabel L. Clark, 90, of Arcanum, died Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton. Mrs. Clark was born in Darke County on August 17, 1920, the daughter of the late Ira M. and Eleanor (Mitchell) Byrd. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church Arcanum and volunteered at Wayne Hospital for many years. Mrs. Clark worked for United Telephone Company, retiring in 1986. Mabel was a 50 year member of the former Arcanum Eastern Star. She was a past member of the American Womens Business Association and a member of the former Civitian Club. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband Lowell S. Clark, who died December 13, 1983, son Ted Clark, Daughters Judith Clark and Nancy Reynolds, 3 Brothers and 7 Sisters. She is survived by a Daughter Deborah Uhrig and husband Stephen of Arcanum; Sons Bob Clark and wife Eileen, Monte Clark and wife Tyra, and Kirby Clark all of Arcanum; 17 Grandchildren; 21 Great Grandchildren; 4 Great Great Grandchildren; Sisters Helen Marie Cashman of Winterhaven, FL and Hazel Roebuck of Alsip, IL. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Arcanum with Pastor Doug Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Abbottsville Cemetery. Mary F. Barnhardt, 87, of Arcanum, died Saturday evening, June 18th, 2011 at her home. Mrs. Barnhardt was born in Greenville, on February 18, 1924, the daughter of the late Andrew and Helen (Bryant) Fellers. Mary was a Homemaker and Mother. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband Carl Tegtmeyer who died October 3, 1978 and her 2nd husband Donald Barnhardt, who died October 7, 1983, Sisters Betty Isaacs and Pauline Blevins, and a Brother Charles Fellers. She is survived by Daughter Pam McLain and husband Howard of Arcanum; Sons Roger Tegtmeyer and wife Mary of Arcanum, Duane Tegtmeyer of Arcanum, Richard Tegtmeyer and wife Marie of Greenville; Grandchildren Marissa and Howie McLain, Trish Couch and husband James, Kris Tegtmeyer, Kyle Tegtmeyer and wife Sara, Travis Tegtmeyer and wife Mandy, Valeri Tegtmeyer, Rick Tegtmeyer, Rob Tegtmeyer and wife Erin, Duane Carl Tegtmeyer II and wife Jennifer; 7 Great Grandchildren; Sister Virginia Gibson of Greenville; and Brother Hubert Fellers and wife Lucille of Greenville. Gerald L. Kress (June 18, 2011)

Gerald L. Kress, 68, of Greenville died Saturday evening, June 18, 2011 at Covington Care Center, Covington. Mr. Kress was born in Montgomery County on May 29, 1943, the son of the late Ira and Pearl (Beaver) Kress. He was an employee of Honeywell (Fram) in Greenville retiring in 1999. Gerald was a Franklin Monroe Graduate. He was a Life Member of the Greenville Eagles #2177, and a member of the Greenville Elks Lodge. Gerald was preceded in death by a Granddaughter Lily Thobe, Sister Virginia Kress, and Brother Larry Kress. He is survived by Daughters Carissa Foster of Greenville, Kelly Kress and Special Friend Justin Thobe of Greenville, and Cassie Miller and husband Donald of Prescott, Wisconsin; Grandchildren Noah Miller, Owen Miller, Calvin Thobe, and Isis Thobe; Brother Roger Kress and wife Betty of Ansonia; Sisters Shirley Kinnison of Greenville, Erla McFall and husband George of Florida, and Donna Thompson and husband Greg of Beavercreek.
