Robert Best, 85, of Greenville passed away on June 7, 2014 at Union City Care Center. Robert was born on March 8, 1928 in Bradford, Ohio to the late Earl Best and Roy and Roma (Anderson) Heffner.
Robert served our country faithfully in the United States Army. He was a member of the Greenville VFW. Robert retired after driving truck 40 years - 20 of those were spent with the Carl Subler Trucking Company. After retiring, he owned and operated B & K Lawn Service. Robert really enjoyed woodworking and even had a workshop in his garage.
In addition to his parents, Robert is preceded in death by two brothers, Lowell Best and Earl Best; a half sister, Mary Crawford; and step grandson, Kevin Banta (2003).
Robert is survived by his wife of 36 years, Betty (Pence) Best of Greenville; two sons and daughters in law, Joe and Denise Best of Arcanum, Ronnie and Jeannie Best of St. Paris, Ohio; two daughters and sons in law, TK and Jeff Riegle of Greenville and Bonita and Tom Schlechty of New Madison; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 2 step daughters, Diana and Steven Banta of Greenville, (who had been his caregiver for the last 10 years) and Cathy Pence of Greenville; 7 step grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside celebration of Robert’s life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenville Union Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Darke County Veterans Honor Guard. The family request memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the American Heart Association.

She is survived by her daughters and sons in law, Shirley & Galen Oswalt of Arcanum, Ohio, Pat & Lowell Randolph of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Barbara & Budd Dancer of DeGraff, Ohio; grandchildren, Lynne (Steven) Myers, Deb (Craig) Dynes, Sheryl (Kelly) Kramer, Michael (Julia) Randolph, Gregory (Alison) Randolph, Jerry Randolph, Amy Gillespie, Duane (Michelle) Dancer, Dina (Pat) Morris and Diane (Lee) Dubois; 26 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Keith Markwith whom she married on September 1, 1935; granddaughter, Dawn Dancer; sister, Merle Blume and brother, Rev. Howard James.
Helen had been employed for 15 years at the former Vietor-Houston Grocery Store in Greenville as well as a homemaker. She also delivered Meals on Wheels for 30 years. She was a member of the 1st Congregational Christian Church of Greenville, Darke County YMCA and Fort Greenville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
There will be a service held on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, Ohio, with Pastor Ted McCurdy officiating. Burial will follow at Miami Memorial Park, Covington, Ohio. Family will receive friends on Friday from 12-2 PM at the funeral home.

Charles W. ‘Chuck” Swank, 71 of Greenville, Ohio passed away on Tuesday June 3, 2014 at 6:57 AM at his residence. He was born August 31, 1942 in Darke County, Ohio the son of the late Charles F. & Viola C. (Beyke) Swank. He served in the United States Air Force. He retired from Corning Glass where he worked in the maintenance department. He was a member of the American Legion Post #140 and Greenville Moose Lodge #329.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother: Edward D. Whitesell; sister: Clara A. Edwards.

Mary C. (Burns) Johnson, age 82 of Arcanum, Ohio and formerly of New Madison passed away at 10:30 A.M. Monday June 2, 2014 at the Oakley Place of Greenville, Ohio. She was born April 6, 1932 in Darke County and the daughter of the late Carl and Ruth (Harpest) Howdieshell.
Mary was a homemaker and for many years owned and operated the Fashion Flair Beauty Shop of New Madison and Ithaca.
She attended the Castine Church of the Brethren, enjoyed camping and spending time with family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Step Father Henry Schlechty; her husband Stanley Leroy Johnson in April of 2014; brothers Marvin and Paul Howdieshell and sister Marjorie Gilbert.
Mary is survived by her children Sherry (Steve) Hubler of Cedarville, Ohio, Kent Burns of Brookville, Ohio, Kris (Shelly) Burns and Kraig D. Douglas L. Walton, age 72, of Greenville, Ohio, and formerly of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 7:00 PM at Heartland of Greenville. He was born on March 7, 1942 in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Conley Lee Walton & Laura Marie (Chapman) Walton.
He is survived by his sister and brother in law, Margaret E. & Richard E. Rhoades of Greenville; step sisters, Diana and Sharon; niece, Annette M. (Rhoades) Holmes of Cleveland, Ohio; 2 great nieces; 1 great great niece and nephew. Doug is preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Michael S. Rhoades but is also survived by Michael’s wife, Debra Rhoades of Minnesota.
Doug retired from the Dayton School System and was a former member of the Dayton Moose Lodge.

William L. “Bill” Bradley, 82, of Greenville, passed away early Monday morning, June 2, 2014, at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Greenville.
He was born August 1, 1931 in Greenville, son of the late Paul A. and Helen (Arnett) Bradley. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Howitt and a brother, Paul Bradley.
Bill had retired from Bank One in Greenville and then from PNC Bank in Englewood. After his retirement he drove cars for Dave Knapp Ford. He was a member of the Greenville Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Antioch Shrine, the Darke County Shrine Club, the Greenville Jeepsters, Greenville Moose and Eagles as well as being an avid bowler and Ohio State fan.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn (Kreider) Bradley, whom he married May 16, 1958; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherri and Keith Rismiller of Palestine; and several nieces and nephews.
Services with a Masonic Memorial Service and Scottish Rite Ring Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home in Greenville with Pastor David Cummings. Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery.

He was a lifelong member of the Stelvideo Christian Church, a member of the Gettysburg Masonic Lodge No. 477 over 60 years, and a 1947 graduate of Gettysburg High School. He spent most of his life farming.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Jean Erisman whom he married in April of 1959. Also surviving are his sons; Douglas Erisman, Edward Erisman and wife Amy, Eric Ray Erisman and wife Marybeth and Chris Erisman and wife Felicia all of Greenville; 6 grandchildren and their spouses, Tom Erisman and wife Jamie, Tim Erisman, Dustin Erisman and wife Marissia, Jessica Erisman Jay and husband Justin, Tyler James Erisman and Marykate Erisman Bonfiglio and husband Tony; 3 great grandchildren, Emma Erisman, Lailante Erisman and Jacob Allen Jay; 1 step great grandson, Brennen Seifering.

Ernest G. Myers, 96, passed away May 30, 2014 at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville, Ohio, where he had resided since 2011. He was born in Marysville, Ohio, June 8, 1917 to Benjamin and Kathryn (Weidman) Myers.
He purchased the local Ford dealership in 1955 and operated the Ernie Myers Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealership until 1992 after which he started Ernie Myers Auto Sales on Wagner Avenue at Rhoades and concluded his years in car sales by moving his business to Martin and Ohio Streets until he retired in 2011. Prior to moving to Greenville, he was general manager of Ross Motors in Middletown, Ohio. He also served on the Ohio State Highway Patrol and was employed by Scotts Seed Company in Marysville, and Nestles Milk Company in Marysville and Sunbury, Ohio. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and served at the Great Lakes Training Center and in the San Francisco area. He graduated from Marysville High School in 1935 and attended Bliss Business College in Columbus, Ohio. He also graduated from the Ohio Highway Patrol Academy in 1941 and Ford Motor Merchandising School in 1948.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion, Elks Lodge 1139, Darke County YMCA, Greenville Rotary Club, Darke County Shrine Club, Greenville Country Club and the Ohio State University Presidents Club and Alumni Association. He was also a 70 year member of Greenville Masonic Lodge No. 143 of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio and a 59-year member of both the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and the Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Ohio.
Ernie devoted much of his time supporting community organizations. He was one of the original founders of the Darke County YMCA and was co-chairman of the fundraising and building committee for Phases I and II. He also served as YMCA president as well as president of the following organizations: United Way of Darke County, Greenville Rotary Club, Ohio Auto Dealers Association, and Greenville Rotary Club. In addition, he served as Darke County Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America.
He enjoyed raising funds for many schools and organizations in the Greenville area and also served as chairman of fundraising drives that helped build a residential clubhouse, a parsonage and two church sanctuaries in Homosassa and Crystal River, Florida.
Past recognitions include the 2001 Veterans of Foreign Wars Outstanding Citizenship Award and the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award in 1987. The Darke County Chamber of Commerce presented him an award in 1982 for outstanding achievement in citizenship and contributions to the community.
He married Helen Compton, also of Marysville, on April 4, 1943. Helen passed away April 7, 2002. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Taylor of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Margaret Myers of Marysville, and two brothers, Ronald Myers of Xenia, Ohio and Ervin Myers of Crestline, Ohio. He is survived by a niece, Ruth (Bob) Ridgway of Xenia, Ohio, nephews Richard Myers of Xenia, Ohio, Max (Linda) Myers of Fall Creek, Wisconsin, and Gene (Diane) McMahon of Marysville, Ohio, and his daughter, Melanie Myers of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Gerald J. Greer, age 83, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away May 25, 2014 at the State of the Heart Hospice Care Center in Greenville.
He was born December 1, 1930 in Darke County, OH, a son of the late Perry & Laura (Shafer) Greer.
In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by 6 brothers, Arthur, Chester, Robert, Everett, Sam and Charles Greer; and 3 sisters, Thelma Greer, Mabel Schneider and Mary Duvall.
Gerald was a member of the Greenville Eagles, Greenville American Legion and was active with the Greenville Color Guard. He was an avid sports fan but especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports for Ansonia and Tri Village schools.

Rev. Thelma Lois (Pilcher) Scott (May 23, 2014)
Rev. Thelma Lois (Pilcher) Scott, 97, of Lynn, Indiana passed away peacefully at her residence on May 23, 2014. Thelma was born on October 1, 1916 in Wayne County, Indiana to the late Clarence and Serena (Johnson) Pilcher.
Thelma was a house wife up until her husband passed away and she became a United Methodist Pastor from 1973 - 1992 when she retired. She enjoyed reading, gardening, canning, cooking, sewing, preaching and serving others. She loved being a stay at home mom and spending time with her family. One of her fondest memories was when she was able to take a trip to the Holy Land with the help of her District.
In addition to her parents, Thelma is preceded in death by her husband, James M. Scott, Sr. who passed in 1973; a sister, Eunice Bringman; two brothers, Edwin Pilcher and Herbert Pilcher; two grandsons, a granddaughter, Serena Chancey and great granddaughter, Falyn Scott.
Thelma is survived by four sons, James and Evelyn Scott, David and Linda Scott, Jerry and Carol Scott and Ron and Judy Scott all of Richmond, Indiana; two daughters, Sharon and James Funkhouser of Lancaster, Ohio and Cathy Kildow of Lynn Indiana; twenty nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and one brother, Alfred and Violet Pilcher of Englewood.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 11:00 AM att Peaceful Valley Church, 5518 S. 500 East, Lynn, Indiana, with Rev. Charlie Crouch officiating. Frances enjoyed crocheting and ceramics. She was an avid bowling and participating in a league for over 35 years. Most of all, Frances enjoyed spending time with her family.

Carl H. “Chicken Man” Wooten age 84, of Greenville, Ohio passed away at 1:20 P.M. on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Heartland of Greenville. Carl was born June 25, 1929 in Gallipolis, Ohio to the late Robert & Orpha (Hall) Wooten.
Carl is survived by his wife, Anna Jean (Smith) Wooten whom he married January 22, 1977; children, Carol & Bob Robinson of Springboro, Deborah & Ralph Lowe of West Carrollton and David & Debbie Wooten of Dayton; step children, Jeffrey Barger of Greenville and Lisa Durbin of Greenville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Clara Mae McCammon of Columbus and Lucille Thivener of Columbus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Carl is also preceded in death by a son, Paul Wooten; and several brothers and sisters.
Carl retired from General Motors with 30 years of service.

Carl is survived by his wife, Anna Jean (Smith) Wooten whom he married January 22, 1977; children, Carol & Bob Robinson of Springboro, Deborah & Ralph Lowe of West Carrollton and David & Debbie Wooten of Dayton; step children, Jeffrey Barger of Greenville and Lisa Durbin of Greenville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Clara Mae McCammon of Columbus and Lucille Thivener of Columbus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Carl is also preceded in death by a son, Paul Wooten; and several brothers and sisters.
Carl retired from General Motors with 30 years of service.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home with Mr. Ray Thivener officiating. Burial will follow in St. Valbert Cemetery in Versailles. The family will receive friends on Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and Tuesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
